I'm so glad you made an analysis on this! Weird Bed &/or Yes Please has been one of my top songs for a while and I've been waiting for someone to do a breakdown/analysis on the lyrics besides Tal (no hate to Tal of course, I still really loved his vid on the song but just didn't necessarily agree with some of his interpretations and hoped for a further breakdown/explanation of the lyrics ) I always kinda interpreted the song to be about roleplay but was utterly baffled by half the lyrics. So thank you (and APG) for explaining them. I also loved your drawings/animations. I thought they did I good job of explaining and helped me visualize what was going on. You're a great artist! I hope you make more song analysis like this in the future! (only if you want to of course) Anyways sorry for the somewhat lengthy comment, I just really appreciated your vid. Have a great night and I'm gonna listen to to Weird bed on loop now. 🩵

Don't apologise for the long comment, I really appreciate that you took the time to write it. I definitely feel the same about the song and I really wanted an explanation I agreed with since it was very rare I'd find one that was on the same page as me. One day I just said "fine I'll do it myself" and here we are now. I personally think this was what Joe was going for or at least closer to what he meant than a lot of other explanations I'd seen. I think it's great that you now have a more in depth understanding on a song you like that you agree with personally. I do think there's a culture of approaching this song with disgust, of course when I was explaining it I certainly was pretty awkward, but listening to it is actually a very beautiful experience when you understand what's being said. Much like how Melanie Martinez made menstruation and period sex beautiful in moon cycle, Joe has made roleplay and sex sound beautiful in his own way and I think that deserves more appreciation. I thank you for remembering APG's contribution to this project as she was a real life saver. Like I said at the end she definitely knows a lot of things I don't from... "Life experiences" that I haven't had yet. Though she'd want me to point out that she is nowhere near as "freaky" as the characters in this song 😂. Her explanations also helped me understand other lyrics on my own (e.g the whole "rolling overcomers" section she figured out helped me finally understand the whole "ninesome" verse) so overall she was an incredibly important component to this video. APG deserves praise for her contributions, 100% The animations took a very long time so I'm really happy that they served their purpose to help visualise and understand things that were happening. I think weird bed is truly a lovely story of two people that love each other and I wanted that to be shown through Pink and Blue's on screen relationship. Thank you ❤️ I might try doing more song analysis since this video has done so well.

@@project_letters Thank you so much for responding! I'm so thankful that you and APG decided to explain the song! Weird Bed &/or Yes Please has been a song that has interested me for a while. I find that quite a few people treat the song as if it some disgusting thing, ask "why did joe make this" or interpret the song to be about an inappropriate relationship. And while I do agree that it can be a bit awkward and get why people may respond that way, I don't think that was the song's intention and I think its quite the opposite. As someone who is not interested in sex and usually kinda turned off by topics of these things, I still find the song weirdly beautiful and captivating. Joe's lyricism and the way describes the topic is very interesting and not as vulgar compared to some other songs. Which is why I'm so grateful for this explanation of the lyrics. Roleplaying and experimenting with these sort of things with your partner can be fun(?) and I think consenting to it is also great and essential. Its perfectly fine if people don't like the song or is taken aback by the subject matter (I was too at first) but I think its perfectly fine if Joe wants to make a song about it. He is an adult and is allowed to touch on these types of topics if he wants to, especially since nothing is explicitly stated. I think he handles it in a creative way. Idk why but I just really like the song. Anyways thanks again for the response and for making this video. You and APG did an amazing job. I found it really helpful and I hope it clears up things for other people too! 💜💙

Indeed 😂 Bonus: I know, shocking. I had no idea, I thought her son was a virgin birth. This is horrifying news to me. How could she? I thought all tally hall fans were virgins! How has she managed such an impossible feat as getting a member of the opposite sex to associate with her let alone be legally bound to her and invent children with her! What the hell! This is illegal, defies biology and the laws of physics as we know it! What the piss! How? What is this witch craft! I always thought that weird bed/and or yes please was about a depressed guy being alone on Valentine's day, looking to find a woman, failing and buying a [Shreks] toy, and as he looks around he thinks about all the tragedy in the world, almost commiting [sewer slide] but deciding not to, it feels like a very Joe Hawley thing to make a song about being lonely on Valentine's day
@project_letters2 ай бұрын
Interesting thought. It explains the pearl harbour I guess but it doesn't explain there clearly being a woman who is getting her larynx icicled and tongues slid into her. Also the sex toy was a vibrator which though not impossible to be used on a man, tends to be used on a woman. Another question raised us why he is wearing a condom if he's alone or why he's rolling past an alternative will if he's alone or consenting to things if it's only him

@project_letters2 ай бұрын
Yep, this song is definitely and banger about banging. I definitely thought this song could benefit from a thorough explanation that went lyric by lyric, especially since I disagreed with a lot of explanations I'd seen online. The whole pearl harbour thing appears to just be telling us when this happened. Either during the pearl harbour attack (some suggest that they might've had TV on in the back and that the broadcast reporting on it happens while they're going) or after it by an indefinite amount of time. Both work since the song does clearly have time skips (going from stating that she had her larynx icicled and a tongue slid into her to asking him to "come and dance" which would've happened prior to those sexual activities) so the "as if we hadn't been hit" could be hik saying it in hindsight now knowing that the tragedy had happened while they were doing the deed or him saying that they did it regardless of the fact that Hawaii had been hit (could have happened yesterday or weeks ago, it isn't clear). The story takes place in California so they weren't actively affected by it.

I’ve always thought the voices were possibly samples from the Boralogues/T.H.I.S. I was never able to figure out the other voices besides Ross. I know Ross’s voice like the back of my hand(probably because he’s my favorite member) but in general all of the tally hall members have very unique voices in my opinion so it’s easy to tell who is who.But I never knew that possibly Rob and Zubin were used in the song? But going back to Ross I thought he was saying “Mediocre” at the beginning from that one clip where they were driving by a car that said “Honk if you like hot blondes”. But then again I don’t know it was just a hypothesis.

Why did you say this took place in California? Pearl Harbor was in Hawaii wasn’t it?
@project_lettersАй бұрын
The story of this song does not take place in Hawaii during the Pearl Harbour attack. The couple are in California as made clear by "buskers splayed all blood on 3rd street promenade". The references to Pearl Harbour aren't for the location but instead for the timing. The story takes place some time around Pearl Harbour. Whether before, after or during. The couple were able to continue having sex because they weren't affected by what was about to happen, was happening or happened

1:05 wow i really didn't expect to get one of my favorite songs ruined for me by this video : ( Ive always interpreted it as a song about enjoying being in someone elses pressence so much that dying at that moment doesn't sound so bad Next thing you're gonna tell me is that wrecking ball is just about someone who likes really wrecking balls : (
@project_letters3 ай бұрын
I'm not the one who came up with that interpretation and I was shocked to hear it had that meaning when I found out a couple of years ago. I still don't think that was the intended meaning because of things like them trying to become alive and in their arms once again which wouldn't quite make as much sense if it was about self pleasure. Also them crying because their partner hasn't "died" is a bit drastic in this interpretation, I'll be honest. It's sweet I guess but I always preferred death being literal and them coming back to life and either genuinely or sarcastically saying the chorus to the alive person. Your interpretation is lovely too. Remember that song meanings are versatile and you can get whatever you want out of the lyrics.
