I had no idea the knee painting became so elaborate at one point. The idea is kinda like tattoos of today. Thanks for an insightful history lesson :)

Fun fact: Live insect jewelry is actually still a fairly popular thing today among Yucatec Mayan women in the Yucatán Peninsula. The maquech/makech is a bejeweled beetle brooch made of a native beetle that is decorated with gold chains and precious stones. It has its roots in Mayan folklore. The story goes that a Mayan princess fell in love with a prince from a rival tribe/clan and was forbidden from marrying him. The story differs slightly here based on who’s telling it but some versions have the love affair being discovered and the lover being sentenced to death and others have the princess refusing to eat and choosing to die rather than not be with her lover. In the “death sentence” version, a shaman changes the prince into a glittering beetle that could be worn over the princess’s heart as a reminder of their love. In the “refusing to eat” version, a healer with magical powers takes pity on the princess and changer her into a bejeweled beetle so she could live as a beautiful brooch and forever stay next to her lovers heart. Either way, one of the lovers is turned into a beetle brooch and spends the rest of their life resting over the heart of their beloved. And that symbol of everlasting love is one reason why the jewelry remains popular today. The beetles are also often kept as pets. At least then people aren’t being completely cruel to the beetles but owning them is still a fairly unethical practice, especially when you consider the fact that the beetles can only be found on the Yucatán Peninsula.

The live bug thing is pretty horrifying. I once wrote a song as a joke about someone sewing live butterflies to their wedding dress (and then the dress taking off on its own) after a friend talked about sewing (laser cut cloth) butterflies onto her wedding dress.

I have a vintage watch (1938) that I wear daily. I sent it in for cleaning and maintenance once and when it was returned to me they’d scraped the radium paint off my numerals and replaced it with modern glow in the dark paint. I was pissed.

That is actually what was thought for many years until a historian at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto challenged the theory. If you want to read the article where she goes into greater detail, you can find it on my source list at line 21. The link is in the video description. It's a really interesting read!

I'm glad wide leg jeans came in fashion again(for I can't wear skinny jeans as I got wide hips, thick tighs and small waist). Nowaday mainstream fashion seem very boring(specially men's fashion) - seems like we're using the same things since 1990's. In the past fashion changed dramatically in 10 years, now things seems to move slowly. Seems like they don't have new ideas anymore. Hope crinolines come back in the future.

I wouldn't mind 90s fashion coming back in theory, but they didn't bring any of the things I wanted. Specifically jewel tones. It's all neutrals right now which do not work for my complexion. 😔
