I'm only a few minutes into the video, but wow am I impressed with the disclaimer after the intro! It's really easy to just portray the "fun" and "aesthetic" parts of historical culture and lifestyle for a gimmick without acknowledging all the fights for rights and equality that were taking place as well, and I think the fact that you did shows you really are on a legit level of historic fashion nerdiness, because all of the most well-researched and involved creators I know of who make content about fashion and lifestyle throughout history tend to make it a point to acknowledge that "the past" wasn't all funky clothes and interesting antiquities, but real times with real historical events and social conditions going on that people dealt with. Its impossible to make a video about history and have it be apolitical and without "social issues", history is inherently political and social. Of course in a video talking about how people used to dress its important to mention "this is not how /everybody/ dressed", but you wanted to make sure people knew you were 'one of the good ones' and make an ass out of yourself, And as a queer person in an interracial relationship; I, for one think it was incredibly thoughtful, and it'd be great if you didn't talk over those voices.

Fun fact: I'm not sure if this was my grandma or my great-grandma (I think it was my grandma). Anyway, we're from Iowa, where at the time it wasn't unusual for women to wear pants (I think this was in the 50s or '60s), but they went on vacation in Colorado and they didn't know that at the time it was against the law for women to wear pants there. They kept getting weird looks, and I think eventually someone told them, and she changed, but it could have gotten a little hairy if the wrong person had seen them. UPDATE: My mom did remember more info than I did. It was my great-grandma, and it was on my great-grandparents' honeymoon trip to Colorado, so it would have been in the 30s.
@OceanLover11884 ай бұрын
It's possible it was into the 60s. We're in California and my mom was not allowed to wear pants to school until she was in the 4th grade. Girls had to wear skirts or dresses and only boys could wear pants. She wore shorts under all her skirts so she could still run and play.

That's an exciting story, you should check and find out if it was your grandmother or great grandmother, that had to have been wild at the time. It's hard to imagine your clothes being legal in one state and not in another, that's history they never tell us about and it's really interesting.

@TarynsTime I'll ask my mom if she remembers. She heard the story more times than me. My grandpa was the one who always told me the story, but he passed away last month, so I can't ask him. 😔

At 48:36 I see an Olay Sponsor shot with an 80's look. Where was that look/date?? Besides that- I have no notes! Haha. I absolutely loved this video. I love all the research, history and historical accuracy that goes into these. The attention to detail that Safiya brings to her productions is what makes her one of the best content creators.

If I remember correctly, that was the outfit she wore on a previous fashion history video. Maybe they modified one of the makeup looks from this video and used the clothes from the previous video?

"The original naughts" "Let's hit the links...broad!" "Wig, everywhere"..."Hot Lorax" LOL. This was a fun one. I LOVED the 30's look for both of you! You both look adorable :) Tyler looked best in the 00's and Saf looks best in the 70's; I don't know what that means, but...that's my unsolicited opinion. Loved this video!

I love Safiya's brows, but something about the flapper makeup, I think the lip shape, looked REALLY good on her. Or maybe that's just my inner goth being attracted to the eyeshadow, lol. Update: The 1950's look is also killing it. Fully an Elizabeth Taylor vibe.
@ravenofroses4 ай бұрын
right??? i know she said the flapper look wasn't really her vibe, but i thought it looked SO GOOD. (especially because of how expressive she is!)

Yeah she might not have vibed with the look, but her face literally looked like it belonged in those catalogs

I’m going to honest but seeing Safiya without eyebrows while her makeup was being done just looked wrong. Her eyebrows really frame her face and make her look stunning, I think the painted on brows made her look a bit odd.

12:29 I think he may actually be in White Tie, the even more formal brother of Black Tie. The waistcoat-tailcoat combo is like the definer, if I recall correctly.

I was looking for this comment. She even commented how he was black tie, and I’m like, “he’s literally in white tie, with tails!” 😅 White tie was considered more formal, like the men’s version of evening wear. There was a gap for somewhat less formal wear, and the tuxedo filled it. It was popularized in the northeast, though different people believe different origin stories. A tuxedo has the shorter jacket, usually a cummerbund and black tie. The lapels are generally satin, as is the bow to match. Tuxedo pants don’t have belt loops. I love Safiya, and yeah, it’s not that deep and you don’t have to like, go into the lore on tuxedos, but it just really caught my attention.

Safiya, I've been following your work since you left BuzzFeed, and I truly appreciate the amount of effort you put into your videos and how mindful you are about the content you create. You are a f***ing amazing role model for everyone, both young and old (by the way, we share the same birthday!). Your content is truly incredible-not only entertaining but also making people curious enough to research more about the topics you cover. As a graphic designer who wants to become a college professor, I find that incredibly inspiring! Keep up the great work!

Safiya, as a black and queer longtime watcher of yours (since BF days & I was a mere high schooler) I genuinely appreciate your added bit of recreating history but not idealizing it. It took 30 seconds for you to make me feel seen and appreciated especially in the state of our country. Thank you. ✨

Tyler is in white tie, the most formal of formal for men. Black tie is the same but with a black tie and the waistcoat is also normally black.
@nicolescats24 ай бұрын
It doesn't help that rental places put them under the tuxedo section and call them a "full dress tailcoat tux". Even if you knew that white tie was a different dress code you might still call it a different type of tux out of reflex.

As a legit 90s kid, VHS trouble was a large part of my childhood, so I'd say the 90s date was very accurate.
@zlo83894 ай бұрын
Tyler wasn't in black tie for the 1920s date. He was in white tie which is still used today for some operas and balls. That's why the tuxedo looked different. If he had been in black tie, he would have looked exactly as black tie looks today as not much has changed.
