I noticed a strange issue with the front friction shifter in the cold this morning. Also ACED MY FIRST QUIZ! I've been stressing about it since Sunday. Music is "Hotbox Cold Weather" by Diesel Houdini - a band I was in.

I went back to school as an adult and I found it helped me focus in all areas of my life. It was hard work, but I found the learning and end result rewarding. Hope you experience the same. Congrats on the first quiz!

Mornin' Josh and congratulations on the quiz! I miss the simplicity of pre-index friction shifters. Slippage...the friction surfaces inside the shifter either get "accidentally" lubed (I doubt this would happen on any bike of yours) or the surfaces just get "run in" and polished over time. Old trick: Take the shifter apart, clean the surfaces with solvent and reassemble. If that doesn't do it, take it apart again and try roughening one of the surfaces very slightly with coarse emory cloth...one or two passes just to abrade it a bit. Really like the music and the band's name...

A lot like a weston style brake. The band was me and two other guys. That album won Rock Erie Album of the year in 2010 believe it or not.

Lol stressin out an then realize its simple. How school is from our perspective then and now. Sometimes on my kids homework, I think to myself why didn't I get this back then. Smh! I know exactly what you're trying to imply. Wisdom. Congrats on nailing it! Im working on a friction shift bike now. Just restoring it. I love it's shifting. "Shimano - Patent Pending" rear derailleur still smooth!

Middle and high school was not a good experience for me… so I guess there might be some damage there. I dunno. Thanks a bunch. I like the friction a lot. Like a whole lot. Amazingly smooth. Why most tend to look down on it (or at least I think they do) is beyond me. Happy throat punch Friday eve.

@EriebyCycle at least the college thing doesn't seem so intimidating. Life experiences and street smarts prepares you for it. I think. My dad is in his 60's. He's obtained 3 degrees since he turned 50. His childhood and upbringing sounds similar to yours. Yeah man friction shifting is so underrated. I think the guys that really appreciate the mechanics of the bicycle still use it. Path Less Pedaled uses it and Bike Farmer uses it. I think I'm seeing it make a slight comeback! Happy Thursday my friend!

@EriebyCycle yes sir! 1 associates in Horticulture. 1 associates in Hospitality/Hotel, Restaurant, Travel Business Management, 1 Bachelors in Metaphysics as a Reverend. He also got his Realtor's License several years before that... and you know what?! He doesn't use them. Lol! He said he just likes to challenge himself. He's a high-school dropout. Was a drummer in several heavy metal rock bands and my family's country music band. He likes bikes too. He's in to the cruisers, no clunkers style. He hated school. He was an outcast. He's a hustler type of guy. Sells anything on ebay to marketplace and Craigslist. He just has a thirst for knowledge. Likes to challenge himself a lot. He's like a poor man's Joe Rogan. A liberal hippie renaissance man type guy i guess is the best way to describe it. Lol you guys are kind of similar in ways. I say you got this my friend!!

Sounds like a very interesting fellow! Tell him some screwball on the internet (me) said Hi. Thanks pal. It’s almost 50 degrees here. I took a nap outside in the sun yesterday at lunch.

I commute to class in VT and this happens to me all the time... I think my shifter has more friction in the morning than the afternoon... I tend to pack a multi tool to tighten it back up in the afternoon when I ride home
@EriebyCycle Жыл бұрын
Interesting. Mine is the opposite, more friction in the afternoon. Safe travels!!!

Nice bike. Those old hybrids don’t get the attention they deserve in my opinion.

Thanks friend. I seem to love them. This one has quickly become my favorite to ride.

Are the cables new?
@EriebyCycle Жыл бұрын
They are. Both the cables, and housing. Shifters are vintage but appear to be barely used… or at least very well kept.
