Law 10 is silly, but can be used to increase the penalties for a crime. I guess.

We looked into this further and discovered that it did not actually make it into Texas Law! It was filed in 1973. HB 110, 63rd R.S. Making it a crime to commit a crime of violence against the person or property of another without having first notified the victim of his intent to commit the crime and of the victim's rights; providing penalties; amending Title 19, Penal Code of Texas, 1925, as amended, by adding Chapter 20; and declaring an emergency. The full details are shown here lrl.texas.gov/legis/billsearch/BillDetails.cfm?legSession=63-0&billtypeDetail=hb&billNumberDetail=110 Looks like we need to do a video about Weird Laws in Texas that aren't actually laws.

Actually law number one is not weird, it makes a lot of sense. The intent is to prevent a traffic in human organs.

Fair point. There is a sensible rationale behind the law. We felt this law also fitted the definition of weird in that it did "induce a sense of disbelief" for us that it is required.

That business about Texas being a "common law marriage" state is pure nonsense! The truth is that there is a statutory provision in the Texas Family Code for this, not common law. Three requirements: 1. Must have current intent to be married. 2. Cohabit as husband and wife. Hold yourselves out as husband and wife. It is known in the law as marriage without formalities. Third requirement may be satisfied by filling out and filing a form, specifically designed for this, with the county clerk in the county of residence.

You only break one law, instead of two, if you give 24 hours advance notice!
