Recommendation for the checks/cash from an MBA student. I’m not sure how you have “adoption island” set up business wise but you could possibly look into making it a 501c3 non profit & deposit them as the donations fans intend them to be. You could have a website for donations, which may help negate receiving them via mail. Take the LLC & the 501c3 and umbrella them underneath an S.Corp- for taxes and what not.

Yeah. Also, the reporting requirements for a 501c3 that makes less than 50k are very minimal. Setting it up isn't too hard, as long as you have a charitable purpose, which an animal adoption program certainly is. Could also help lower adoption fees, though theirs aren't that high in the first place iirc.

What you do is very important. You guys are a HUGE part of the welfare of reptiles and crawlies all over the world. When people send checks, it's because they want to help. Let them help. Us normals can't do much, but we can help you help the herps, and that matters. It seems like not depositing the checks is actually kind of rude, because these people are offering help, it's obviously important to them.

I would say deposit or cash the checks if people are writing the checks to you then they’re likely waiting for them to be processed I work at a bank we see it all the time where a check sits in limbo for an age and the person who wrote the check is anxious or worried that it didn’t arrive one of the things we see a lot is checks getting lost in the mail or intercepted and it can cause someone to have to close down their accounts if they think the check didn’t arrive at its intended location.

Yeah I thought about account limbo too. I’m pretty sure a person can have their bank cancel an uncashed check, or it should automatically become void after 180 days. But yeah, without knowing that Emily has it and didn’t cash it on purpose, there could be anxiety thinking it was lost. Or by trying to keep an account balanced in case the check clears at a much later date than expected I would say they should cash it for the animals. It’s not like Emily (or Ed) solicits donations, so anyone who sends money must truly want Snake Discovery to have it

From a security perspective, cheques are the safest way to snail-mail money to someone. From a book--keeping perspective, always cash cheques so that the sender knows you've received the donation, and it makes their records accurate. 😁👍

Money is just a piece of paper that says, "I see value for this thing." Sending money allows fans to be part of an animal's journey. Maybe they can't have reptiles and live vicariously through you. Maybe they would love to rescue animals but don't have the space/time/energy. Fans can't provide cages, medical care, food and staff to care for animals but they can provide the money to support those things. Part of giving is receiving and you have given so much to us, allow us to give back to you. It is generous to receive as much as it is to give.

So, one thing to think about is the number of people who want to show their love to Emily and Ed. After a while, what are they supposed to do with all the STUFF that they get? How many crocheted snakes do they need? How many stuffed animals, or Pokémon cards? Because what folks are doing is creating a situation where now Emily and Ed have to think about what to keep, what to donate, and what to throw away, so that the /things/ in their house stay under control. And you know, that can’t be fun for them to have to think about, because these are things fans have sent, made, and given with love! But at the same time, they just can’t practically keep everything, or even most things. And even consumables get to be a lot after a while. Someone suggested setting up a proper nonprofit for donations for say, rescue island, and hopefully they do that and direct money there. But hopefully folks also listen to what they say about loving to receive letters and reading them, but not needing more than that. They’re not rejecting your affection or love by asking people to not send them things. And I think it’s really important folks stop and think about how overwhelming the amount of stuff they get must be, ya know? They’re making a specific request, and part of being fans is to listen to that!
