Lisa is Mary Poppins for teenage boys. She swoops in, magically, and helps them through one of the toughest, and most awkward, periods of life. Then before you know it, her work is done and she flies off to help others. Speaking as what was a 15 year old boy in 1985, this movie is closer to fact than fiction.

The name of the movie was taken from a song by a really unusual new wave band named Oingo Boingo. Created by Danny Elfman, and originally called The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. Danny Elfman was a somewhat strange guy who, while having moderate success with Oingo Boingo, found his calling years later in a different branch of the music industry. Scoring movies. You might have seen some of the movies he wrote music for. Pretty much any Tim Burton movie, Mission Impossible, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Good Will Hunting, Spiderman ... I'll stop because he's scored more than a hundred movies. Not bad for a kid from LA who worked as a street performer in Paris eating fire.

Actually, if you think about it, Weird Science is kind of a cross between Frankenstein and Mary Poppins. A very 80s teenage boy hormonal cross between the two, but it's quite obvious. Lisa, like Mary Poppins, is there to help them (Gary and Wyatt) grow up. And like Mary Lisa is Magic. Except Gary and Wyatt make their Mary Poppin (Lisa) like Frankenstein makes his monster.

Great reaction ladies!! This movie was a constant in my early life (and still is). I was 7 when this came out, had it on VHS and watched the crap out of it! Got the DVD when that was a thing - and happily shared this with my boys when the time was right! We all love it. So many quotable lines my wife, myself and my kids use. Yes, Kelly LeBrock was beautiful, certainly a stunner, and I LOVED the humour in this - it's a zany and crazy 80's comedy - full of the common tropes of the time (awesome music, wild parties, and the requisite T&A, even the bad guys from Mad Max!) My kids love the depiction of the 'internet' or computer hacking shown in all it's ridiculousness! 5 out of 5 for me. For another zany 80's comedy, this time with John Cusack, Demi Moore - check out One Crazy Summer! Cheers!

What I love best about this movie is the soundtrack! This is one of Danny Elfman's early movie soundtrack contribution (via his 80s band, Oingo Boingo). Before this, they did Bachelor Party, Sixteen Candles, Fast Times, The Last American Virgin and some lesser-known movies. It wouldn't be Elfman's last, nor his greatest - but you get a sense of what would become soundtracks from Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Men in Black and over 100 more great movies.

Great reaction. Always love your ladies reactions. This movies was classic 80s. While this was a comedy it was about Lisa trying to help these young boys become good men. They lack confidence, were a bit awkward. Lisa pushed them out of their comfort zone in ways to help them grow. The boys basically created a woman not fully knowing what they really truly wanted in a woman. They knew aspects, but Lisa (Kelly LeBrock) nailed the woman trying to help these boys become men, but in funny way. She also pointed out when they failed..."In your race for power and glory...etc" She wanted them to do right thing..which isn't always easy. :)

Back then, here in the UK, you could go to a rental shop and rent any movie you wanted regardless of it's certificate, which we did most weekends, although that didn't include porn! By the end of the eighties new laws were introduced which imposed age restrictions as per the certificate of the movie. Ah, the good old days!

I think of John Hughes movies as "bonding" movies. They are all about people who are alienated from others in some way, connecting with them again. In this case it is Gary and Wyatt "leaving the bathroom", stopping seeing themselves as lonely nerds, getting girlfriends and gaining respect in high school society. Also Chet learns to stop bullying Wyatt and see him as a brother.

I'm guessing someone probably has mentioned it already, but the poster image at the beginning was for the TV series, not the movie. All of John Hughes films are classics, and "Weird Science" was a fun, out-there experiment by him after he just did "The Breakfast Club" with Anthony. Previous to that, Anthony was in his "Sixteen Candles", from which the young framed image of him being shown by him mother was from. That was literally his casting image. Kelly LeBrock was at her all-time prime in both beauty and recognition during this film with her various "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful" shampoo ads. With the mutant bikers invasion, the one with the conehead was Michael Berryman, who did a lot of horror films back then, especially "The Hills Have Eyes" and the lead biker was the always memorable Vernon Wells, who was riffing of his character from "Mad Max 2-Road Warrior", which I highly recommend viewing. The soundtrack to "Weird Science" instantly makes an 80s fan giddy with the great Oingo Boingo songs and the score by Ira Newborn. I put this 43-song together back in 2011 when a friend shared with me the rare Newborn score tracks. You name a soundtrack from the 80s era and I more than likely have it in digital form, either officially released complete and/or extended with all of the songs heard in the movie (in play order); or officially done, but not fully extended due to missing hard-to-find songs, or incomplete since an official soundtrack was never made. Bring my current total of soundtracks to 807. :) If you want to see Anthony before this finally Hughes outing, definitely check out "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club". As for Bill Paxton, what can one say other than he was fantastic as always. He never failed to entertain in all of film roles.

I like the method. If I understood this hadn't been done before. They came up with a comedy and it was grounded enough but when they checked that out it wasn't funny so they tried again but just removed all the boundaries and let the jokes and scenes go where they needed to. Hence the off the wall stuff here. Looking back it probably just seems like another way out there comedy but it really was the one to establish that type of flow. And I can imagine going the organic route is a bit more difficult to land than coloring within the lines. I appreciate it when it does land.

@txaggievet When Chet bursts in on Wyatt and Hilly, that seems to be his sister Chloe’s room, and there are shelves with figurines and dolls, so I think you’re right about that.

Anthony Michael Hall's co-lead, Ilan Mitchell Smith, is a college professor. He quit acting. He also writes for a website which is ironically called "Forces of Geek" - similar to Force of Light. Here is a video interview of him from 6 years ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnSueXl5pbJ6fqs

Kelly is at her most seductive and hilarity. I love the mashup of sci-fi, horror, and comedy teen movie. Great cast and production too.

I used to think of "The Breakfast Club" as my favorite of the Hughes films and it probably still is, but I am more likely to pop this in or "Sixteen Candles." Good quick and silly, and a fun scenario to imagine from that younger perspective.

In the intro you used the Weird Science TV show title screen instead of the Weird Science movie title screen. Not complaining Vanessa Angel is as easy in the eyes as Kelly LeBrock.

While I love this movie, I always wondered what she did with the grandparents in the end. Chet Turned back into normal person and everything else reverse back to normal but we never see the grandparents leave the closet before the parents walk in. So will they still be in there when the parents go to hang up there coats and be like welcome home, and parents be like umm mom dad why are you in our closet? Or did she teleport them home? I assume parents didn't see there car out front or they would have been like we're are your grandparents? Though with the party going on maybe they parked pretty far away?

I'm very surprised that they are watching the 'Pretty Woman' version, I thought it was altered because of the music copyright or something, but I have seen both and I don't have any problems with either.

Very different to other John Hughes' 80s films of the time but the sentiment remains the same and why he has influenced some of the best film (and TV) to this day.
