Qashqai driver at 5:32 takes the award for most situationally aware on this tape. Moves over well in advance, correct signal and just sits there. Wouldn't be surprised if he or she is already an blue light driver, but the response was spot-on. I wish all motorists were as switched-on as this, our ambulances, police cars and fire crew would get to scene much quicker.

One thing that is shown on some of these clips is that some of the latest siren fits are almost inaudible inside a vehicle, not until the emergency vehicle is practically along you. In my home town of Bristol ambulances and older fire engines can be heard from a good distance, whilst police have to be on top of you to be heard.

That's why I love the nice big Federal-Q mechanical siren on the bumper of my Engine... :) It doesn't matter how sound-proof a vehicle is or how loud it's stereo is... the Q literally vibrates the teeth of the car's driver.

3:00 I'm upset, why did they get a vehicle that is basically set up for Germany but imported to the UK? The lights are practically not seen, only the front with the lights of the grille and the dashboard and wing wang, transparent blue plastic across the entire width of the roof and then having two cemetery lights at the 4 corners, at this point they could put the Martin Tone and here you go

what's the big deal about it? The one at 9:30 is typical German as well, but is still used in some places in the UK. Seems a lot easier in the UK to purchase what they want to have, guess that's why there's a much wider range of car brands, models and conversion brands seen in the UK than you see in Germany

Perhaps the variety of warning is caused by us becoming so used to the current tones we become unresponsive. It's easy to introduce different tones electronically. I believe that certain police motorcycle groups use whistles to announce their presence. On a slightly lighter note, I've driven ambulances with two tone airhorns and a bell! Each force used to have it's own livery, albeit mostly variations of a central horizontal stripe, with different forces using different colours for the fluorescent main stripe and reflective edging, some using all reflective (Durham), others with a central reflective stripe over the fluorescent as well as to the edge (Leicestershire, Met Police), some with additional reflective blue and white chequer along the bottom sill (S.Yorks) and others for quite a while retaining 70's style minimalist marking on non traffic cars (Devon & Cornwall). The late 90's saw a move to the current 'Battenburg' on Roads Policing Vehicles (initially voluntarily, West Yorkshire's Police Authority originally resisted it and only put rear chevron part of the livery on to save money and held out with the yellow 6" fluorescent stripe and 1" engineering grade blue reflective edging for a while, eventually it became national standard) with the 2000's seeing the development of 'half battenburg' which was slowly phased in across all marked vehicles.

I could be wrong, but because of it's age, markings and response kit (the siren is obviously not current) I suspect its a Service Loan Vehicle. Whenever any of our DCAs, RRVs or IRVs require a service or are off the road due to being in a prang, deep clean/decontamination or a mechanical fault we get a loaner from a central pool provided by Fleet Services. They tend to be older because they don't clock up as many miles, less wear and tear and they are obviously maintained to a very high standard, so they are retained on the books as they do the job perfectly well. It's in very good nick for an 2011, and must admit the old school tones did make me smile.
