Parents helping. No, not at our school, it was the students, we had a “librarian club” for kids who wanted to help out in the library. You learn a lot of the basic skills to be a librarian and it was nice to hang out in an ac room, mostly it wasn’t busy, only in the mornings. We would also occasionally have parties and they were great, you meet new people hang out with different people. If there was anywhere on my elementary that I had the most fond memories of, it would be the library.

They had the Scholastic Book Fair for us but when they passed out the book ordering thing they said “ok return it by [insert date] with the check stapled to it.” the first time it happened one school year I passed it to the teacher and they asked, “where’s the money?” I said I didn’t order any books, therefore I didn’t need to pay money. She lectured me on the spot on how I should be reading books and it fosters good habits even after I told her I had a bookstore near my house. She made me march down there with all the other kids and made me look at the books, choose at least 3, and have my mom send in the money for them.

Story time! (Seriously its long but you might wanna read.) I LOVED THE BOOK FAIR! Background information: My family was really poor growing up and my dad was a raging alcoholic. In attempt to avoid the alcoholism I ALWAYS had my nose in a book. (Like literally how in the movies the person is constantly oblivious to their surroundings bc they're reading and the friends have to stop them from running into walls and shit.) He was never supportive of anything I wanted to do if it didn't pretain to reading, writing or drawing, but when it did he was all in with me. He had his own battles and wasnt always the best dad, but he definitely tried to make sure I followed my passions. My dad was always the type of person who valued education and reading for me. He loved that i wouldn't be caught without a book, so when the book fair came he would take money out of his alcohol funds to let me buy books. Hed be slightly more sober and read with me the week of the book fair and sometimes even would give me a little extra to get him and/or my mom a copy of a specific book to read together as a family. My parents never finished them WITH me, but my mom would finish them. My dad would start and then forget it existed when he had beer money again, but the point was he was a little bit more sober for almost a week just so i could have books... Im 21 now. I dont have much contact with my dad anymore bc how bad it got when i got older, but now im writing my first ever novel. My dream is to publish through schoolastic as a way to keep those memories alive. ❤

I was a library aid in middle school and can confirm just how crazy book fairs were. Some kid brought a debit card and spent so much money the librarian had to call the parents just to make sure he didn’t steal it from them. The librarian once told us that while she’s always happy to see it come, she’s happier to see it go.

The Book Fairs actually made me sad because there were so many books that I wanted to get, but never had the money to get them. I'd be lucky if I could get a pen, which I did get once. I only purchased one thing from a fair like this, but it was special gifts like diamonds and other stuff. I asked for twenty bucks, and managed to get it. I really, /really/ wanted to get the big diamond for my mom, but I also wanted a pen and something else for a friend that I said I would get them. I would only have enough for the big diamond and my pen, so instead, I settled for the smaller diamond, the pen, and the thing I got for a friend. I felt so proud that, for once, I was able to buy something. It made me feel good to finally give.
