I worked at McDonald’s in the summer of 1979. At my location, I was the first employee to grill the Chopped Beefsteak Sandwiches. I thought it was funny that the patties had lines pressed into them to create the appearance of grill marks after they were cooked on a flat grill. I had to be gentle when searing the patties as too much pressure would flatten out the “grill marks”. I believe that different meat was used for these as the texture and taste was much different than the hamburgers. During that summer, I didn’t have much of an appetite for any McDonald’s food but thinking about it now, I sure would love to have one of those steak sandwiches again.

Back in the old times working at McDonalds was considered a good job and were hard to get in some places. Many of their employees were college students working part-time. Having it on your resume was considered a positive thing because they were usually well trained, had good work habits and were generally considered to by potential strong employees. But as the chain grew the staff began to change from college kids to high schoolers with less emphasis placed on weeding out lacking workers and training. By the 1980s working there wasn't considered much of a job and was starting to be shunned by the younger kids. McDonalds was finding it hard to find staff let alone train them properly. Until the 1990s when waves of foreign workers started to appear McD's was in some serious trouble. Today standards have increased some, but most places now depend on the foreign workers, especially in urban areas.

It wasn't a good job. It was a good teenager's starter job.

The Arch Deluxe is my all-time favorite McDonald's item. It was also part of an entire Deluxe Line menu that debuted in 1996, which took its name from the McLean Deluxe that had been discontinued earlier that year. The Deluxe Line included the Arch Deluxe, the Fish Filet Deluxe, the Grilled Chicken Deluxe, and the Crispy Chicken Deluxe. The Fish Filet Deluxe actually replaced the original Filet-O-Fish, with the smaller original sandwich being taken off menus for about a year until complaints led to its return. Over the next several years, the Fish Fillet Deluxe and Arch Deluxe were mostly discontinued until being officially pulled in 2000. Meanwhile, the two chicken sandwiches were revamped into the next iteration of McDonald's chicken sandwiches. McDonald's has always struggled in maintaining a consistent chicken sandwich on the menu. The original McChicken in the 80s was a full sized sandwich unlike today's value menu McChicken. After the collapse of the Deluxe Line, the two chicken sandwiches remained on the menu without the "Deluxe" label. The two sandwiches were revamped as part of the Premium Line in 2005 and again with the Artisan Line in 2015. This line was killed in the menu reduction of 2020. Given the success of the chicken sandwich wars, McDonald's once again introduced a full size chicken sandwich in 2022 in the form of the McCrispy. This new sandwich can be ordered in regular or deluxe form (having lettuce and tomato) and in regular or spicy (which is differentiated by a sauce). Definitely the worst chicken sandwich offering McDonald's has offered to date.

My favorite McDonalds commercial was in 1985 with William "Refrigerator" Perry ordering 4 McDLTs, 2 large fries, and a diet coke, eating it all in 4 bites, and then graciously offering to clear off the table where he sat with other patrons, of course lifting the whole table up to bring it to the trash.😂😂

I was a big fan of the Mc.DLT. in the ‘80’s. The Big Mac has always been a go to for me, with extra pickles.
