I'm quite the rum guy and the best thing about rums is they are so incredible and diverse, and they cost a fraction of whiskeys because they are slept on how good many of them are. I would recommend rums from Foursquare, Clairin agricole rums are a really fun adventure into weird and wonderful, and there are so many other great brands and distilleries out there, from the Caribbean to Africa, to Europe and South America. And what makes rums so unique is they are the most diverse spirit out there. You can have white, gold, aged, dark, overproofed, agricole, etc. which you don't see such a variety in any other spirits. Explore and enjoy!

Very cool to have you talking about cachaça! I went to Republica Dominica a few weeks ago and I have been introduced to the Caïpirinha cocktail. They were using rum at the resort but I learned that the traditional way of doing the Caïpirinha is using cachaça. I got a bottle of that Leblon cachaça 3 weeks ago and it's great. For those of you searching for an alternative to the Mojito, the Caïpirinha is a great refreshing summer cocktail!

Is this dude Daniel’s brother who made a wrong turn heading to Tennessee and ended up in Jamaica? Because seriously, his rum knowledge is *on point*, almost like he and Daniel secretly enrolled in a class called, “How to Sound Like You’re an Expert in Alcohol Without Actually Trying.” low key miss hearing Rex and Daniel saying Here's to fighting, stealing, and drinking. If you fight, may you fight for a friend. If you steal, may you steal a woman's heart. And if you drink, may you drink with us!" Because let’s face it, that’s just the only way to do it. One correction on cachaça. It is not made with only sugar cane juice, but the whole plant mash, like a grappa. If it only has the juice it is called aguardente, to be called cachaça it has to be made with the whole plant mash.

Rum has always been my go to. Lucked out when I retired and ended up buying a house that is only a few minutes drive from Wildcat Brothers. "Louisiana Style Rums" are made with sugar cane juice as the primary sugar, with the possible addition of small quantities of crystalized sugar, molasses, or fruit. Many of them are aged on wood as well.

Balcones regular Rum is my all-time favorite of the genre. For years I've said that "it's the best rum a whiskey drinker will ever have while also being the best whisky a rum drinker will'. for the longest time it was nearly impossible to find and i purchased a ticket to a "punch" class at the distillery just so I could drink the rum straight. I still believe that I came up with the best 'punch' of the night.

3:45 Haven't been able to get Wray & Nephew here in Michigan for about a year and a half now. Store customers have just given up asking for it at this point. Haven't heard any solid explanations, the most credible though being is the dunder pits at the distallery flooding, something due to the rainfall they had and no legal way of disposing of the overflow. tl;dr, they have to rebuild due to flooding. 14:00 Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 is a fantastic sipper if you're a whiskey or bourbon sipper, made from pressed sugar cane.I highly recommend it! Also Flor de Cana Centenario 18 at around the same price point.

For a cachaça go with ypióca reserva. Enjoy!!!

I got back into rum around a decade ago. I had my share of rum as a young man (decades ago), but it was like 90% Bacardi, the rest being Myers or Ronrico, but always the base, mass market stuff, and it was typically dark rum for rum & coke. I got more into wine and stopped buying rum by around 27 years of age, with the exception of the occasional mojado or other such cocktail. When I began doing some serious travelling, I made it a point to taste food and beverages from the places I visited. It was a trip to Ireland that got me started on whiskey, later backed up by a trip to Scotland. When I took a trip to Dominican Republic around a decade or so back, I asked the bartender at the resort for their best example of DR rum. I was not impressed, but I did decide to rekindle my relationship with rum and seek out better choices than what I had in my youth, and particularly ones that stood on their own and not just in cocktails. What I found that I really liked was Mount Gay Black Barrel rum, and I have been buying that whenever a hankering for rum has arisen, but I should broaden my horizons, and I will look for the Hampden diamond h logo.

I think this is just a weird rumour people made up when they had some issues keeping up with production in 2024 due to weather. Instead of just looking up to see what is going people go "oh what if they're no longer making this rum", and then that spreads. The overproof rum is also the only thing they make, so for them to stop producing this means that Wray and nephew entirely would have to shut down, which 5 seconds of googling shows you they haven't. This guy thinking that the overproof rum is just one of multiple products they make is making this whole vid kinda sus.

Rum is a really fun category, especially the ones who do things like whiskey guys. Holmes Cay and Plantation are great if you want to discover stuff from weird places. So essentially three kinds of rum? Molasses, Rum Agricole (from fresh sugar cane juice), and Cachaca (from fermented Sugar Cane juice). Source material would be Rum Agricole (French Style) because Cachaca is fermented before distillation. Feel like a lot was missed here by not having a Foursquare release.

Im verrrry surprised the rum fan didnt have you try a Caroni. You were saying in this the dundery hamilton was like the scotch of the rum world...try a caroni and i bet youll update your thoughts on that. A small tidbit on the distillery its from trinidad and shuttered its doors in 2002 so all bottles today are the last of a dead breed which is sad. The storage barrels were purchased by many finishers who then aged them in different barrel offerings and bottled at varrying abv. On avg. Most batches are only a few hundred on offer to the market. But comparativly to any aged whiskey (if it were to share this story) these bottles *can* be aquired for a verry reasonable cost. Caroni are singular in nose & palate and are a somewhat extreme departure from the norm you would find off the shelf in the rum market. But they are truly amazing and a fleeting chance at tasting a piece of history.

Let me try (and probably fail miserably) to teach you guys how to pronounce cachaça: Ca - The C is that "K" sound in Car, the A is more the sound in stArt (never with the R tho). Cha - The Ch is the sound of SH in SHoot with the A of stArt. Ça - The Ç is like the S in See and the A is also the one in stArt. Idk if it was good, but I tried. trying to summarize: kashassa, but all A's sound like the one in stArt (without the rrrr sound after the A).

I don’t know much about rum but I have had the opportunity to try a couple dozens over the years and there are some great ones out there - typically quite a bit cheaper than a comparable bourbon. Wider range of flavors/character than bourbon I think (though probably not scotch). I hadn’t thought about the tariff impact until your comment but for me, who lives in the US, they might drive down prices on the bourbon (how much I have no idea). It’s a pretty obvious target for retaliatory tariffs and given the aging process, not easy to ramp production down if global supply is impacted.

It seems similar to using your extras in the second batch of whatever you distill to wring the extra flavour; but you’re waiting a lot longer to put it back in.
