Here the thing about Ford offering Dipper an apprenticeship: I honestly DON’T think it’s what Dipper wants or would be good for him. Dipper said it sounded ‘like a dream come true’ but that’s because he idolises Ford. An apprenticeship, studying under a mentor who seems to be the only one who sees his potential, is what Ford would have wanted at Dipper’s age. It’s not what Dipper wants. Dipper wants to host his own podcast casing down ghost. He might not be the most sociable person but his dream job is running a podcast and helping people with supernatural problems. Ford doesn’t want that. His apprenticeship would isolate Dipper from everyone except Ford. Stan would be gone (made homeless again), the Mystery Shack would be closed, Mabel would be back home, and Dipper - no longer going to school - would spend all his time in or near the house in the woods away from town. For Ford, it’s all about being the cleverest person and being recognised as the man who changed/saved the world. Friendships aren’t important and it’s not like he trusts anyone anyway. Fiddleford McGucket tried to help Ford when he was first making the portal and it drove him mad. He told Ford that the portal was dangerous and Ford’s first reaction was to see it as Fiddleford betraying their work. Ford tells people what he thinks they need to know and nothing else. He doesn’t trust people and this hurts him, them and everyone else in the end. He didn’t tell Fiddleford about Bill and told Dipper not to tell Mabel about the rift. If Mabel had ANY idea what the rift was, Bill would never have been able to manipulate her into giving it to him. Ford sees too much of himself in Dipper but Dipper isn’t Ford. No matter how much Dipper idolises and wants to please Ford, ultimately if the rift hadn’t opened, summer had ended and Dipper had stayed; Dipper would have been miserable. He would have been lonely, more paranoid and spent all his time helping Ford follow his dream, rather than following his own. I say all this as someone who loves Ford. However, he is a deeply flawed character and even though he thought offering Dipper an apprenticeship was a good thing, it really wasn’t.

SAY IT LOUDER ‼️‼️‼️ god i love ford to death. psychoanalyzing him and his narcissistic tendencies at times is my favorite thing ever, he is a flawed old man !!! it's like alex said in the DVD commentary, dipper accepting that apprenticeship would NOT end well
@eee-xd5bo21 күн бұрын
You said this perfectly.
@NuttersIncorporated21 күн бұрын
@@a_singular_silly_goose I did not know Alex said that in the commentary! That's cool! I just see a lot of people taking Dipper's initial excitement at the idea as proof it would be a good thing. It wouldn’t. Ford needs ALL the therapy and Dipper needs a wider support network. Plus, there’s the fact that Ford just expects Dipper to drop everything at a moment’s notice. At the start of the episode, Ford could have shouted, “Dipper, can you come here? I’d like your help,” and Dipper would still have come running. Instead, Ford screamed that his face was on fire. There was no need for that. Dipper is a child. He deserves to have a childhood. He would not get one with Ford. Ford asked Dipper if being with Mabel all the time was suffocating but it isn’t. Dipper and Mabel spend a lot of time together but they also have their own interests and do things separately. Mabel can go to a concert or hang out with friends while Dipper tries to prove bigfoot exists or makes an ‘unexplained’ video. They’d have spent the day doing different things and both come home happy. Being Ford’s apprentice would have been far more suffocating than continuing to live with Mable. They might play D, D & More D together sometimes because it’s a hobby Ford likes. However, if Dipper wanted to make a podcast episode and Ford was working on a new equation, Dipper would be expected to drop his thing to help Ford, even if all he did was make sure Ford had enough paper, pens and drinks all day.

@@NuttersIncorporated yeah !!! he mentioned that if dipper would've taken the apprenticeship, he basically would've ended up exactly like mcgucket (a paranoid recluse), and that ford's biggest flaw is arrogance. and EXACTLY !!! ford projects so many of his unresolved feelings about his own identity as a twin onto dipper and it's absolutely gut-wrenching to see ford saying "isn't it suffocating?" when stan is saying "not everyone can say they have their brother by their side". i wish we had more GF content to explore the stan twins' relationship post-weirdmageddon because good GOD did ford experience some crazy ego death there (spoilers omitted ofc

Thanks so much for this input Ppl always see the situation from just one side and the decision being somehow against Mabel alone when it's just as detrimental to Dipper The kid is 12 Let him grow up
@sanji_joestar21 күн бұрын
Here's what Alex Hirsch had to say about Ford in the DVD commentary for GF: "Ford’s great flaw is arrogance. He believes that there are special people, and everyone else… …That human attachments are actually weaknesses. The song and dance that he’s giving Dipper here is the exact song and dance that he gave McGucket back when they were younger - ‘You and I are different. We’re better than everyone else. We have a path that no one else can understand. No one else can do this.’ It’s a very seductive idea for Dipper, but he starts to be a little insecure. He kind of can’t believe it, and he’s sort of right to be suspicious, because while Dipper is a smart kid, Ford is projecting. Ford loves Dipper because he sees someone who will tell him ‘yes’ to everything, who will never challenge him, and who will do a really insane, dangerous mission. I know there are some fans who are like ‘Oh, this is a great offer! Dipper should just become a mystery hunter for the rest of his life, not go to high school, not go to college, not be around kids his age…’ But if Dipper had taken the apprenticeship, he probably would have gone the way of McGucket - Turned into a kind of insane, paranoid hermit with no friends, and just kind of losing his mind. So, it is a seductive offer, but ultimately, Dipper needs to try to learn not to grow up too fast.” I love how the show both address a need to grow up through Mabel but also not too fast through Dipper. The kids are 12, let them live!

From the irl Journal N3, the reason Blendin made a deal with Bill: "After Globnar, I was getting a LOT of flak for losing a gladiator fight to two children. Even though I got my job back (thanks for that, by the way!), my fellow officers kept calling me hurtful nicknames. Time Baby himself called me No-Friendin Blandin! Do you know what it's like to live like that?" "Just as I was thinking I would give anything for Time Baby's respect, this weird triangle guy showed up in my dreams and said that he would make sure Time Baby never bothered me again. All I had to do was shake his hand! I've never been great at making decisions under pressure, and, well, you know the rest! When I awoke, that stupid triangle had used my body to travel through time and destroy the entire universe" Basically he wanted Time Baby and the others to stop making fun of him. And knowing Bill appears in your dreams proposing to you something like that, it's so easy to trick anyone dreaming into accepting to get their biggest wish fulfilled.

1:36 Stan, Ford, and Mcgucket are all boomers! We aren’t ever told a exact year for their birthdays but from things like background stuff in Tale of Two Stans and the fact they were about 30 in 1982 we can infer they were born in the early 50s so yeah boomers

and they'd resolved things with Blandin, and obviously she wasn't handing it over to be smashed, just used somehow. Like yeah Bill could be in anyone, and that's where her being vulnerable came in. just hate when folks blame her, like she chose for it to happen.

if ford explained the rift to both mable and dipper, this wouldnt have happened. ive always been upset at ford for this

realistically tho it’s not in mabel’s character to care cause at this point we’ve seen her know something dangerous going on and still chose her own needs over it case in point the sock puppet episode so maybe it’s just in his best interest to not let her know about it at all considering how accident prone she can be
@af389721 күн бұрын
@@Ihatescales.mp4 it was literally confirmed by alex hirsch. also, mabel can be selfish, but not "i will cause the end of the world on purpose" selfish. come on
@Ihatescales.mp421 күн бұрын
@ i didn’t say any of that i just said her selfishness can lead her to making that wrong decisions as we’ve seen many times and was even addressed in the comic when mable apologized we can like mable and also call out the flaws in her character all i’m saying is knowing who and how mable can be i don’t think it’s fair to be mad at ford for not telling her i think everyone including mable played a part in it but mable wanting summer to never end and giving away the rift is egregious considering she knew bill was after them and she knew bill could posses ppl and i get she’s a child but put dipper in the same situation without knowledge of the rift and he’s not doing that
@af389721 күн бұрын
@@Ihatescales.mp4 except he did have knowledge of the rift? and also was not put into mable vulnerable situation? i dont care im not mad at mable. and ford is a flawed character anyways, people have been talking about this for a long time now and how HE indirectly is his own downfall
@Ihatescales.mp421 күн бұрын
@ never said you had to be mad at mable nor did i say i was all i’m doing is being fair and giving her what’s her fair share of the blame cause at the end of the day even if she didn’t know the importance of the rift who goes into someone else’s stuff takes something and then gives it away with or without knowing what it was like cmon can we just call a spade a spade ? ford not telling her is such a small factor considering it didn’t belong to her in the first place and she still gave it away and she gave it to blendin ??? the last time they saw him he wanted to kill them i wouldn’t give him a penny let alone a glowing orb that i know belongs to my brother in the middle of the woods and yes i understand she was under a lot of stress and she was sad but being sad doesn’t excuse it as many times as dipper has given up what he wanted to help mable the one time mable can’t get what she wants she throws a temper tantrum and then gives away her brothers belongings…. mabel gets 85 percent of the blame 10 to ford for not telling her and 5 to dipper because how didn’t he realize the weight of the bag was different when he picked it up

A bit of lore about the aliens from the tie-in books: The aliens are pan-dimensional beings that exist in/perceive 7-11 dimensions at once, causing them to have a terrible sense of direction. They crash landed on some 30 million years ago, forming the valley that the town of Gravity Falls would later be establishes in.
