Thank you for making this video. I just received my first power chair yesterday, Quantum 3 Stretto. I’ve used scooters for years out and about. My husband noticed right away and explained about backing up with the casters and I remembered watching this. Today I rewatched it again to get it right. 🤩

1st time visitor to your channel/this video. I just a couple days ago had my Merits Vision Sport delivered. Mid-wheel drive with 4 castors... I am SO GLAD I found this video because trying to reverse direction, I am finding that my chair also does that whole "jarring" motion and I'm not going the direction I want. THIS is awesome TY!

Haven't been in many different wheelchairs, Invacare and now Permobil both are six wheel machines. I used to get the biggest kickI seeing how far I could back down my tile hallway before I get the whip! Especially in the Permobil when the casters were new. Great parking tips and tricks.

I have been using castor wheeled power chairs for a long time, and have just lived with that ever-surprising which-way-will-the-chair-sway phenomena. It never occurred to me I could control the pivot. My pantry door jam and walls thank you for enlightening this user how to control the pivot.

The casters can also loosen laminant floor planks. Your floor is floating and a 4-500lb m300 has unlocked a few of my vinyl planks in front of my fridge and pantry. I needed to repair and glue them down together and to sub floors.

Hey, how do you like it? I'm stressing over different options and was seriously considering the Stretto. I've been in Invacare rear-wheel-drive chairs for a long time, but my mom (who is also disabled) and I both had bad experiences with our last Invacare chairs, so I'm probably switching companies, which means I also will end up in a different drive chair, too. Anyway, how are the casters on the Stretto? Do they cause any unpredictability/jerking or difficulty changing direction? How is it over obstacles? Overall experience? Sorry to bug you ha. I just really want to get the best chair I can! Also, I know this is your first power chair and may be a bit of a stressful transition, so let me know if you have any questions or anything. Hope it's going well!

Its great you have shared this, and Im sure you can appriciate that some of us can use this information right away, and others may need some practice time. And thats a problem.The chair manufacturers need to predesign the process and eliminate our need to be taught or adapt to how these chairs move. The universal fix for this caster problem is a replacement wheel and no rotation for the vertical axle. Its a wheel that is availble from Banggood. Its a Combo wheel that was originally designed for Forklifts called a Mecanum wheel.
@TotallyNormal-4 жыл бұрын
funny ya mention the TRAX style wheels.. ive been playing around with them - and the biggest issue ive come across, is the damage they cause to floors that aren't flat, level concrete - they destroy most residential flooring types with tons of scratches! which could probably be taken care of with different materials.. the other issue ive had, is ramp transitions, or small doorway thresholds.. things get weird in a hurry when you're transitioning from a flat surface, onto a ramp. they work REALLY well for forklifts and other machinery that lives on a concrete slab - but more engineering needs to go into a version that's better suited for mobility device use.
@luvaquad Жыл бұрын
It’s very clear to me .. the testing process of these casters , fork/forearm if you will .. are not tested by females wearing long skirts .. guys - if you wear a skirt - try it . I often get stuck when the front wheels are over a memory foam rug placed at the area I will attempt to do a sit to stand . My feet can not handle hard flooring / it’s easier to bare weight . The caster wheels sink in & suck the rug portion in between the main wheels & the front casters . I tend to angle the wheelchair so that the wheels hold the rug in place better. Attempt a braun crappy ramp .. 4 casters toggle as they attempt taking ya up & down . I’ve had a jazzy & a c300 they discontinued after having it from 2007 to 2022. You really should be paid & working for our govt to approve our wheelchairs. We know the mfgs see a replacement as a lap top - cell phone - replace by design every 3-5 years lol My rug also allows my feet to rest comfortably. Short people need our Fanny , thighs to sit properly with our feet able to rest of footplates that freak our quadriplegic feet into a muscle /neuron warfare. Imagine if .. we had inexpensive, not plastic .. individual foot plate covers made out of memory foam .. Velcro off & in da washer it goes. It has to be less expensive vs a custom power wheelchair designed for 5’ ft nothing & leg / thigh length these chairs do not adjust to. My complaint has been filed .. Ty lol

@cal30m14 жыл бұрын
Permobil’ s design of their casters are much better than quantum. Quantum’s caster flip is terrible, they have a much larger radius “flip”. I think it helps if the point where the caster wheel makes contact with the ground is close to the pivot point of the vertical attachment bolt.

I don't back up in doorways period. I go forward into a room where there's plenty of space, and turn around. I never have found an occasion to back through a doorway. Where i hit the wall is after using the restroom. Chair is in the hallway facing the bathroom door and when i get done, i have to turn it around to exit the hallway. 95% of the time I do it successfully, but like at night when I'm galf asleep, that's when i hit the baseboards and doorway of one of the bedrooms.

this is so freaking true . but question about something else . is it me or does anyone else hit a incline or bump at a slight angle to put one wheel first ? i began driving with a front wheel casters and always did this rather than going straight on . i still do this with my m300 . obviously front drive you can just gun it . but does one wheel first help rather than going straight ?

i do that too! seems like it helps... lets each side's suspension take the bump separately..

Do Pride/ Quantum offer one-sided-forks, as opposed to double-sided forks on each caster? Permobil and SunriseMedical (Quickie 700's) use O.E. one-sided forks to prevent environmental damages (in house/ vehicle) in my experience. Invacare TDX SP was a grinder in the bathroom for this reason!

my legs on pride quantum edge 3 stopped on the straight out leg position, can i jump the leg motor from a seperate batter to get the legs down so I can drive it and use it without the legs?????
@TotallyNormal-10 ай бұрын
there's a little microswitch that tends to get stuck on those.. its underneath, about midway down the legs.. kinda behind knees. a lot of times if ya can get a finger in there and click it a few times, it'll start working again. almost impossible to reach WHILE sitting in the chair tho.. there is more than one microswitch, but this one is near the top of the allthread rod that you'll see from underneath. if the limit microswitch is the problem, jumping power wont do anything. do the legs go back up at all? or did they just stop moving completely?

Do you have any other tips on how to maneuver a front wheel drive? I’ve been avoiding them because the back swings too wide and I can’t get turned around in tight spaces like I can with a midwheel and rear wheel. I have a midwheel now but it gets stuck in the snow.

Yep: my lizard brain knows how to. And then the question: what do you prefer, 2 or 4 small wheels? I only know 2 small front and 2 small back, both have their pros and cons, 2 small in front is so long ago that I can't compare. Never had 4 small but I think I don't like it for outside.
