I emensely enjoyed your video. I too am an accomplished portrait painter, and I do a lot of drawing studies before I do an oil painting portrait of someone. Bruce Lee was a defining hero in my adolescent period, when I was heavily into Marvel Super Heroes and. Martial Arts. I see my drawing and painting through the "Sculptor's Eye" ,which has helped me to visualize and feel intuitively, in my mind's artistic eye, the subject's form in its geometrical occupation of space and time. I think learning bones and muscle anatomy plays a big part in getting the form and likeness right. And of course, as I teach my grandchildren: draw,draw and draw some more, but have fun!

Hey Wei, I like the portrait of Bruce Lee, but I think using the reference photo via computer maybe hard to get proportion acurately. Bruce was my idol as well. In fact, I still use his quotes in my everyday life. The easiest way to Master all things is to be like water. Anyway, for drawing this I would probably use Andre Loomis to get some frame work first. I also have a question about loomis. You madea video stating that the nose would go somewhere around just above the bottom of the initial circle that you make. Other people say that the tip of the nose goes right on the line of the circle. Or ........is ti that as the head turns in prospective the nose would eventually touch your guid circle? Thanks
@ArtofWeiHo9 жыл бұрын
Mr1fireice Thanks. It's a much easier setup for me to show the reference on the side if it's on a tablet. It's too difficult to find print images that is the size that I want. In terms of the head, there's many different methods, but it all centers around Loomis' methods. You can use whatever variation you want as long as it works. Nothing is suppose to be too constraining.

Hey Wei :D new sub here. Just a couple questions if you have the time :) 1. I'm really interested in digital art, but only have the bamboo tablet and my iPad. I've been checking out the Cintiqs, but they're way out of my price range as a high school student without a job yet. Should I wait until Im older to invest in it? 2. How exactly does a cintiq work? Is it like a monitor for a computer? Thanks =)
@ArtofWeiHo9 жыл бұрын
iGamingProR Yeah, your situation, I would not recommend the Cintiq. The bamboo is fine but I would recommend upgrading to a Intuos model as they are much more sensitive. Then all you need is a desktop computer or laptop. The iPad is too hard to make art with. Just get any PC or Mac and you'll be able to run almost all the drawing programs out there. So get a computer and a tablet. Or just use your bamboo with a desktop computer. The Cintiq is just a monitor that you can draw on. It still needs a computer to hook into. That's all it is.

***** It's just regular sketching paper. Not the regular printer paper, but slightly better, something with some texture to it.
@ThatArtistGryph9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply I have another question maybe you can help me. I was in the market for some new pencils now that I understand the benefits of different types of graphite/lead like h vs 2b for shading. Was wondering if you could point in the right direction. 3 options i'm seeing 1. Mechanical pencil 0.3 0.5 and so on. 2. 2mm lead holder 3. A normal pencil with the specific graphite/lead type. My question is lets say you were using all these pencils and the lead was 2B for all of them are there any benefits to choosing one over the other ?
@ArtofWeiHo9 жыл бұрын
***** Hi Tony. Good question. The .3 leads are really small and is good for small details and very fine lines. But you don't need that because you can get the similar sharpness with the larger leads just by sharpening. The 2mm is the standard size. I use the 2mm lead with a lead holder. The lead holder's advantage is that the lead is retractable via the lead holder, making it 'cleaner' to carry around. Also, the 2mm leads are slightly cheaper than the wooden pencils. But you will need a special sharpener for that. I love the lead holders. Given that, you might ask why would you choose a wooden pencil over the lead holder? Well, the wooden pencil 'feels' better in my opinion. I am able to get more feedback between the wooden pencil on the paper than I would with a lead holder on the paper. You can feel the paper more with the wooden pencil. So for me, it's a toss up between the two. The lead holder is convenient, but nothing replaces the feel of the scrapping with a wooden pencil on the surface of the paper. So I would suggest go with your #2 and #3 options and forget the .3 leads. Hope that helps.

I have 2 questions, did you finish some art academy? and is it bad if one uses a grid for drawing? Thanks in advance =]
@ArtofWeiHo9 жыл бұрын
+Goran Pavlović I never went to art school. Drawing grids are okay, but just don't use too dense of a grid. Reason is that it becomes too mechanical, and painful=). Maybe a like 2x2 grid, like a tic-tac-toe grid would suffice. Remember, it's not about being accurate at first. You've get more accurate as you draw more. It all comes together. Making grids so your final drawing is super accurate defeats the purpose of drawing. especially if everything else is not good, like your line work, shading, composition, etc.
