I was the 3rd Bgd/1stAD brigade surg for a while. I recall the CO and staff at HHC , the aid station and the medics, the clinic layout, upper story library, and of course the gym and track. The now barren track parks just off the autobahn adjacent to the rod&gun club etc are still visible on Google maps but in those days they were jammed packed with an incredible amount of armored and other combat vehicles of all kinds, it was a very impressive unexpected sight as it was shielded from the highway by big stands of tall thick trees. A very memorable experience and have revisited Germany many times but havent seen Bamberg since the base closed. I think most of the 1st AD is now at Ft. Hood.

@@richk184 Wow, Rich, commuting daily to Nürnberg is a heck of a ride! When my dad was stationed in Crailsheim in the late 60s I stayed in the Munich High School dorm and rode a train home for weekends. Wasn't good for me since I was a bit lazy and studies suffered. In Bamberg, I recall attending a basketball game on post when the Harlem Globe Trotters visited. I spent a year in school in the "annex". I recall the snack bar and barber shop and the movie theater with kiddy matinée on Saturdays (25 cents: 10 for the ticket, 15 cents for popcorn). I played pool at the AYA quite often. Good times!
@richk1844 жыл бұрын
@@mikebaginy8731 Since we're reminiscing, A friend and I used to sweep out the theater after movies for free passes saved me a whole quarter. Goldfinger was the first James Bond movie I saw and it's always been my favorite. I remember hanging out at the exchange reading comics before we bought them and used to go to the youth center all the time to play fussball. Did you go to the big public pool? I used to love the brochen and sausage they'd sell I think it was like 60 phenig , not sure if i spelled that right. I also remember the rod and gun club. I went to an annex that was in the woods for fourth grade and there was an annex bldg next to the regular school. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories.
@mikebaginy87314 жыл бұрын
@@richk184 I never visited the public pool in Bamberg. I recall the R&G Club (log cabin style) too, my dad and I fished frequently at the pond. My sister and I played shuffleboard at the club. I didn't play fussball, but tried out for American football and the AYA, we rotated back to CONUS though before I actually played. I don't recall a school annex in the wood, but had classes in the one near school, on the main post side of the fence. I fondly recall sledding at the "school hill", which was smaller and "suicide hill" towards the officers' quarters. And that reminds me of a silly rumor someone started during trick-or-treating: "go to the officers' quarters, they'll give you a dime!" Heck, they were the first one's to run out of candy! I often played in the woods behind our quarters. There were the "first woods", the "second woods" and far away, the "third woods". But don't go to the third woods, there are guys with knives who'll cut off your d... I miss those times fishing at the R&G Club pond. I also enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner at my father's mess hall and open house daysd with BBQ at Camp Muna. Do you recall the bear at the Bamberg castle? Poor guy never saw more than his cement pit.
@richk1844 жыл бұрын
@@mikebaginy8731 I don't think i ever visited the Bamberg castle, I did go to the Coburg castle . My bother and I used to go through a hole in the fence to get on base rather than walk to the gate since the theater and exchange were close to the housing area.

Check out the black and white picture to begin this video. We lived in the biilding to the left on the 3rd floor. Those windows are the ones that I looked out of facing Zollner Str. I freaked out when I saw the picture. The building behind where the cars are parked housed the library .the officers club. the NCO club and the laundromat in the basement . for all you oldies .whdn I went back in 92 it was not used for the same thing. In 64 5 6 there was a sign on the front naming it "THE RENDESVOUS CLUB. In the summer with the windows open I could watch the singers performing at the club right from those windows in the picture as well as the tank convoys that shook the building.

... After basic and AIT at Fort Knox... I was assigned to 2/2 Armored Calvary Regiment, H Company, H34, M60-A1 main battle tank ... Jan '72-Dec'74 (one month early Christmas ETS) ... Made it to Spec 4 ... Loader, Driver, then Gunner ... In my last time in Grafenwohr (a NATO facility) as Gunner, I scored highest score in the Company... First Sgt flew us back in a Huey, gave us each (crew of 4) a case of German bier, and presented us each a German bier Stine with the unit Crest, our names and date... I still proudly have the bier Stine, but not the bier (ha ha) ... In addition to Grafenwohr and Hohenfels, we did border duty and patrol just outside of Coberg ... Were, it was then, the border of East Germany ... The actual border was double fences, about 100 meters apart, filled with antipersonnel, anti truck, and anti tank mines we were told... And watched over from both sides by NATO groups and East German groups ... We were told the East German groups were backed up by Russian troops, somewhere just out of visual sight ... I actually loved Bavaria, Bamberg, Munich, Frankfurt and the rest... And am proud that Bamberg has been declared a World Heritage site, as it most richly deserves to be ... I must have walked over those bridges in town, where the beautiful town hall (hope I'm correct?) is situated, hundreds of times... To bad we didn't have smart phones back then, as I would have been better educated on everything there... So happy for KZbin, that enables people to post wonderful film clips for everyone to see ... Brings me to warm loving tears ... Best regards ...
