Seville 51:00 has very interesting architecture because it was once part of a North African Islamic kingdom in southern Spain - the Moors. In fact several locations in Seville were used in Game of Thrones to depict Dorne, because of this unique architecture.

Thanks for showing us the dry dock! These huge cruise ships are not lifted out of the water with cranes, the go in a dock that is like a lock and the water is pumped out. The 'fans' at the front and bottom of the ship are called bow thrusters. Like propellers, the allow the ship to move parallel to/ away from the dock and I think they also allow the ship to turn quicker in tight spaces. the big bulb or pit at the front and bottom is a wave breaker. It allows the ship to sail smoother in big waves. The propellers are in the back and as you said thrust the ship forward or allow it to stop in reverse. Nice video, you may be the first that has done a dry dock experience on a cruise ship. I think the gray ship was indeed an aircraft carrier!
@barbaradace7952
@barbaradace7952 Жыл бұрын
Gray ship with the Spanish flag and "bluff bows" looks like some variety of LST (Landing Ship-Tank). They fill it with tanks, trucks, and other land vehicles, navigate it up to a beach and ram it right onto the sand; then that big front door flops down, becomes a ramp, and everything drives out...if things go according to plan. If things *don't* go according to plan, you could be strafed by sniper or aircraft fire (my dad was on an LST in WWII and experienced this), and/or you could have the damnedest time trying to get back *off* the beach. As you can imagine, trying to gun the propellers in reverse would result in piling sand under the hull, thus stranding you even more firmly, so the procedure involves removing as much weight from the ship as possible, enlisting favorable tides, gentle persuasion, and fervent prayer.

Chris, that big round orange thing is called a "BULBUS BOW" it smooths out the water while cruising. The four fan like things are " BOW THUSTERS" If you could you should have gone to the stern to se the "AZIPODS" they with the bow thrusters engaghed moves the ship sideways while leaving or returning to a dock. bluegrass48

When you were strolling below the ship after completed the painting works, you asked what was the name of of the machineries of 3-4 "FANS"? It was called TUNNEL THRUSTERS which will be used to assist the cruise ship to come alongside the pier or casting off safely. Thanks for sharing this DRY DOCKING video which I simply loved it. ALL The Best on board, CHRIS. Cheers.

Chris, good video pal. The bulbous bow helps the ship get through the sea easier as the waves hit the bulbous bow first, meaning the ship can save up to 15% fuel consumption as there is less resistance. The three propellers on the hull are the bow thrusters, you didn't look at the back of the ship you would have seen the azipods they rotate 360 to steer the ship in any direction, the bow thrusters are used for bringing the ship alongside when going into port and leaving port, they can steer the ship with the azipods, so the ship can rotate in its own circle, there are videos on KZbin of one of the RCCL ships doing that on sea trials before being released to the company.

That ship in the yard you were asking about, it looks like a Spanish Naval ship. Looks like an amphibious type of ship. By the back end, it looks like the end opens up to take on board vehicles or hovercrafts. We have very similar Naval ships in the US. Looks like an LPD/LHA or something similar for an equivalent for US ships. Naval ships undergo dry docks just like cruise ships and can go to the same yards. Actually, the job you are doing, Firewatch, is the same job many sailors on Naval ships have to do as well while contractors are welding and grinding on board their ships. You get to see some amazing stuff in parts of the ships you wouldnt normally go to, just like you have. I was stationed on a US Amphibious ship similar to the one in your video, an LHD. One of them actually burned down a few years ago if you saw in the news, the Bonhomme Richard while in dry dock. Fire watch is very important (although that fire was set on purpose allegedly) so great job Chris! This was definitely one of your best videos!

Chris, as you asked in the final minute, yes, I did watch until the end and realised that you saved the best for the last. If you have never seen a drydock in how many years working with cruiseships, imagine how special it is for those who have been guests/passengers for years, even for decades, and never got to see this critically important aspect of health and safety for all stakeholders in this fast-growing industry. It is very reassuring to know that, in addition to the round-the-clock cleaning and maintenance that happens during every cruise-vacation, there are extraordinary thorough drydock periods every so many years to give a close look at everything on the ship, inside and outside. Well done! History in the making! A unique documentary from all that I have ever seen.

This is something we passengers always wonder about, but never get a chance to see. We sailed on the Symphony almost a year ago, and it is a great ship. Unfortunately you were not working in the casino then or you would've seen me playing every day and losing my shirt…. this was a great insight into what goes on during dry dock. Thank you so much for sharing it with all of us passengers who wondered what went on and never had a chance to see such a good look at it. The "red thing" sticking out of the front is a "bulbous bow". It helps to cut through the water and smooth the passage of the hull. The "fans" are bow thrusters which allows the bridge to maneuver the ship near the pier, particularly giving the ship great lateral thrust capability. The anchor is a "Danforth" type anchor. The two "prongs" are called flukes. They pivot and allow the anchor to dig into the sea bottom. Bear in mind, that the weight of the anchor chain is what primarily holds the ship in place.

The red fans under the ship a called side thrusters, so the ship can push away from the dock side. The bulbous bow at the front of the ship is to reduce the drag on the ship’s hull and reduce the hight of the bow wave.
@jamie514
@jamie514 Жыл бұрын
You were at the front and saw the 4 bow thrusters which are used for docking maneuvers and they can move water in either direction. The bulbous bow is a hydrodynamic device that helps reduce the turbulence of the bow of the ship which reduces the drag and improves the effeciency of the ship. They don't actually lift the ship into the drydock. The drydock has a watertight door. They drain the water from the drydock chamber the ship parked inside and then the ship comes to rest on those many blocks. As you went down the stairs to the floor of the drydock, you may have noticed you passed the waterline which is where the water will be when they flood the drydock again at the end of the maintenance and then the ship will float out.

I was hooked onto every second of this video. So fascinating! And i was SO excited to see the bottom of the ship, and I could not stop smiling seeing how much all the crew were enjoying that special moment. Thank you for sharing with us!!! (Also those tanks you said looked dangerous and reminded you of nitrous oxide in fast and furious at 46:35, I think those tanks were CO2 bulk tanks. Anyone else? I work at a movie theatre and we have big CO2 tanks hooked up to our freestyle soda machines).

Chris You certainly know how to produce awesome vlogs. Your dry dock log is fantastic seeing parts of the ship some would never see or imagine. Thank you for taking us along while in Dry dock.

Ah, I'll be on Symphony in a few weeks, so I'm really looking forward to seeing all the changes first-hand - I actually didn't realise that Symphony was due to go into dry dock!

Wow, what an insight, particularly being given access to the drydock floor. Loved the close ups of the bow thrusters, the anchor, and the bulbous bow. Outstanding!! Next time, give us some shots of the rudder and the props (I'm assuming you were not given access to those areas).

You guys are super privileged to enjoy the ship and all the amenities. In my time as a crew member we couldn’t enjoy anything like that and the cabins were shared as well. Only top officers had their own cabin. I was on two dry docks: one at Baltimore and one at Genova, Italy. Enjoy the time in Spain.❤
