Thank you for all of your efforts to help songwriters with this channel. Something that I think would help me would be dealing with the challenges of rewriting a song that's nearly complete. They're usually tunes I've worked on for a while. Sometimes, when I realize that there's a melody or structure that needs a change- it's diificult for me to come up with something fresh. It's almost as if the work is already set in stone in my mind, even though I truly know that it is not. In the end I've ended up with so many complete or nearly completed songs that got away from me. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks again for being here!

Thanks for the comment and question WIlmah! Yes, it's really hard once you're inside a song to be able to see if objectively! We'll add this to our list of future videos! Thanks again :)

Really appreciate the considered and quality content, examples and demonstrations. Of late I keep coming back to your Pre-Chorus video as the handful of techniques there, rhyming patterns for me in particular at this moment, are super helpful, for example the ABA tension. Can be such a frustrating craft, but the juice is DEFINATELY worth the squeeze 🤘

Thanks, Neil. Great to hear! I'm also particularly fond of the pre-chorus series, so I'm glad it resonated ;)

I read a lot of advice that says "write a lot of songs" which I totally understand. But do you consider writing a quick two verses and a chorus, and saying "that's ok" writing a song? Or would you consider writing a song the process of editing over and over until it's the best it can be, recording it and all that jazz? I guess I have trouble deciding if I should keep revising a song (which usually makes me get sick of it) or should I move on to the next one.

Such a great question. It’s Keppie here, but I think Benny would say the same - we both do both. We write regularly, at least a song every 2 weeks, which is a discipline that forces you to write quick, and get comfortable with writing average songs, but also ups the amount of good songs we write in a year. We then take regular breaks from regular writing to then select the best of the batch and then go deeper into revising those songs.

@@htws Thank you, Keppie! I've never heard anyone's thoughts on that part of the process, that makes a lot of sense.

I think the toughest challenge for me is creating a new section that fits what I have initially come up with (usually the verse). I create a groove. Maybe a great melody to a chord progression. Any new section sounds contrived and forced. It never sounds right. How do you go about creating either a pre chorus or chorus? Do you play around with the melody, taking it higher and then try to find some chords that fits the melody? Or throw some new chords together based on theory (eg, I think I’ll go to a dominant V chord or I’m going to switch to the relative minor of this key-and then I’ll make my melody up based on these new chords…)??? I get stuck in taking creating a new section and what tools do you use to get ideas? What is your thought process for moving forward? Thank you! Jim 🙏🏻

Hey jkyles! We made a little series of videos on the channel (3 vids) all about writing pre-choruses, which is all info totally applicable to writing any 'next' section, really! Check them out :)

First off u guys are awesome. Frfr I appreciate that you're not youtubers and you're actually helping people with specific issues. I love your work. I would love to see a video on how you can transform on theme into different types of songs. For example. A break up. How dodo u write about a breakup without writing about it. If that makes sense lol.

Hi Xander. It’s a great question and something that we’ve been exploring quite a bit lately in conversation with other songwriters. We’ll start working on an answer and hopefully have some content on it soon. Thanks for the support!

Thank you both for sharing your knowledge! I was wondering if you have any advice on writing lyrics for a bridge section, for example: how does it fit into a story? I'd love to see a video about this!

I love this channel. I recommend it to all my friends. I could use some tips on how to fill out songs - in other words, how to take a very simple song with say, vocals, percussion and a guitar, and add other tracks to fill out the sound and make it interesting. I've got a lot of "spare sounding" songs that I would like to turn into fully formed creations. Also, if I can add a second request, tips on collaborating with others when writing songs. Thanks so much for your excellent videos - your commitment and love of music really shines through!
@htws
@htws 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed. Glad you’re enjoying the channel. How to fill out songs is a great question - generally I think it’s important to establish the most important elements that drive the track, making sure these elements represent a good portion of the frequency spectrum - so guitar, percussion and vocals can often be sitting in the mid-range, which means there’s opportunities for bass and drums to be added in the lower end, then keys, strings or electric guitars to be added as textures in the upper frequencies - this approach helps create a ‘full’ sounding mix. In regards to collaboration, it’s so important to embrace the process with as many different people as possible - opening yourself up to new and exciting ways of writing, whilst also discovering what kinds of collaborations you find more enjoyable/ productive. Hope that helps
