When you live in the Netherlands, sometimes good cheap food is hard to come by, but not today! Also...moving to the Netherlands from the US the last thing I thought I would see is a UFO...but today, we did! Living in Holland, or just life in the Netherlands, there is no shortage of hidden gems and who knows where or next stop is going to take us?

Yes, in 1982, I studyed near Utrecht someone said at that time, already, when you go to the center off Utrecht eat a broodje Mario. Amazing how they still are there!

In 1999 the UFO landed on the roof of the ProRail headquarters, known in Utrecht as the Inktpot. The artwork by Marc Ruygrok, which officially bears the name 'Zover', was placed on the roof in 1999 during the art event Panorama2000. During the event, the hatch was open and a light was on inside the UFO. The artwork in the shape of an approximately 7 meter high teapot was installed in 2013. It was made by Lily van der Stokker as part of the Call of the Mall art exhibition. The teapot represented intimate, everyday life amid the large-scale renovations of the station area and Hoog Catharijne. The name refers to Russell's teapot, a statement by the philosopher Bertrand Russell. The teapot was initially placed on the traverse over the Catharijnebaan of the Hoog Catharijne shopping center. In 2015 it was moved to the roof of a nearby parking garage. In 2021, the artwork on the same roof was moved closer to the edge so that it is more visible from the street side.

The current UFO is the second, bigger one. The original was removed, I think the weather had worn it out, and they were doing renovations to the building, so it had to be taken down.

Back in the nineties my office was close by. So, at lunch, we took a stroll to Oudegracht to endulge ourselves in a sandwich from Mario. And even nowadays when we go for a day out to Utrecht, broodje Mario is mandatory on our list. There are more things to do in Utrecht that are top notch. Van Speelklok tot Pierement is a must see museum (and must hear!). It also houses the Nijntje museum, not just for kids.

Mario's "broodje" (the bread) is baked from pizza dough, actually. Separate from what's in it when served. You may be familiar with the "calzone" pizza where the "bottom" is wrapped around what would be on top of it and it is baked together. If you want an excuse to go to Amsterdam, there's an Italian restaurant there that already for 50 years does a great calzone (€14.75 - Lange Leidsedwarsstraat 63-65 - "Piccolino")

Great to see broodje Mario is still there. When I worked at NS Reizigers many years ago, my colleagues and I went for a walk during lunchtime, but the real reason was to get a broodje Mario😊 The ProRail building is the largest brick building in the Netherlands. The UFO and tea pot (and there should still be a giant pigeon somewhere) were part of an art exhibition long time ago, several objects could all be seen from the top of Dom tower. After the exhibition they decided to keep some of these objects.

Next time try the Domtorentjes from bakery Theo Blom, Zadel straat 23 in Utrecht and the hidden gem Betje Boerhaave, Hoogt 10 in Utrecht. It's a kruideniersmuseum and they sell candy and cookies from jars like in the old times. Entry is free and if you want you can buy something or leave a gift to support them . (I'm not affiliated. 😂) And visit the shopping mall of Hoog Catharijne, it's as luxurious as Le Printemps in Paris.

Yeah 'Broodje Mario' set off a whole thing about 'Italiaanse Bol' broodjes. Good quality bread, and the combination of the chorizo with everything else, just, yeah. It is a full proper meal for the soul in a sandwich.

Oh boy…you opened up a can of memories….I worked in Utrecht’s inner city in the seventies when Mario had a market stall on the Oudegracht where they sold de broodjes they baked in their bakery on the wharf below. Fondest memory (besides the broodjes) : they always served me ahead of the que. Something to do with being blond, young and “proportioned”. Those were the days…..

In my hometown Vlaardingen there was (don't know if it still there because i haven't been there in years) a bakery who made the best broodje gezond with kruidenboter, ham, cheese, egg, sla, tomato and it was delicious. If you find a bakery who makes fresh broodje gezond, definately try that too. :)

Again thx for a nice video. How do you like it in hilversum maybe to quick to give an answer to, but how does the place feel compared to rotterdam? I guess you will need some time to settle and how do you like the house you in. Can i say you are very lucky to find a place my son is trying for years now to find himself something ended up in a bedsit! Very small but it was the only option he had. He lives in Nijmegen i think yoy have visited that city. You should keep that in mind to visit coming summer at the "vier daagse". The whole city is in party mode in that week. Awesome please keep it in mind, well worth it. Good to see you back.

I know the "broodje Mario" as an "Italiaanse Bol" in Den Bosch. From 10th of April onwards, you will be able to take the boat tour UNDER the city of 's-Hertogenbosch (talking about hidden gems.) With the Intercity, it's 1 train station south of Utrecht. Just saying...

45 years ago as a child I ate my first pizza slice at Mario's in Utrecht, same spot, it became a staple during shopping trips with my mother, they are fantastic. De Inktpot is a fine example of Dutch Art-Deco, if you ever have the chance to visit the interior, please do, it's gorgeous. Another tip for your next visit to Utrecht is Museum Speelklok, filled with music boxes, Dutch street organs and antique animatronics, it's a blast!

Broodje Mario has been the number one sandwich for decades in Utrecht. One of the few things I actually will hit the ATM for. I hoped the hidden gem would be them. Another hidden gem (imho) is Royal on the Kanaalstraat, best burger in town. And stop making fun of my vehicle, I had nowhere else to park 😟 The swings were a functional art installation and have been on a few stations, they have been gone from Utrecht CS for quite a while.
