I used to play SS13, but my english was kinda poor, so I always ended up as an assistant to walk around and watch the chaos. I have downloaded SS14 yesterday and tried "Research/Science Assistant". The Head of Research guy saw me and taught me about anomalies, APE and gave me some hints. I'm glad nowdays we have people like both of you willing to help new players. This game is very nice and it's awesome to play it "again"

As someone still relatively new to the game my biggest hurdles are recipes really. The in game guidebook was super helpful when I was learning medical. I've had trouble in science though since most people focus on the artifacts and few have time to explain the APE. But even with that, this game is fun, fantastic and it deserves more players. APE: wrench to move it, place it in front of an anomaly, and pick a particle type with right click. to know which particles to select scan the anomaly with your anom scanner. it will have 3 types of particles, randomly assigned to 3 effects, Danger, Unstable and Containment. Danger Increases Severity(seen on the anom scanner), making the anom more dangerous to be around, but also making more research points. Unstable.. uh, i guess it un-stablises it... honestly you never really shoot it with these. Containment are the main important ones, and will decrease severity and stability, leading the anomaly to disappear and you to be labeled a hero.. unless RD wanted the points, in which case you might get beat up. the goal of anoms is to keep generating them until one is safe enough and/or out of the way enough to be kept around as a point farm. bewarned, even a safe anomaly can become unsafe, as they can randomly choose to begin decaying (leading to it disappearing) or increasing in severity (leading to it going crit and you being responsible for a big big problem.) if the anom box in sci (where you put your anom scanner to harvest the points from the anom) begins to beep, haul ass to the connected anom and fix its issues. anom types heat = pink spiky ball = surround with plasma glass and its 100% safe forever even if it crits, but dont let it crit... electricity = small floating orb = only safe when low severity and out of the way of the public ice = floating blue diamond = safeish, surrounded by plasma glass or other strong materials it will need occasional repair black hole = black hole, pulling objects = safe when out of the way of the public, but releases radiation near it. meat = red floating ball, surrounded by red tiles and monsters = spawns disgusting beasts that tear people up = almost always unsafe bluespace = concentric blue rings = teleports around, teleports people to swap their places, and can teleport people into walls on occasion = safe.. kinda.. its gonna piss people off, but no one should die to it, with some luck.. i think thats all of em, have fun being the anom andy of lizard for a few shifts!

I never joined SS13 because I was nervous of learning. Now I regularly play HoP on Lizard and am having a great time. Absolutely wish I'd been willing to make mistakes back then.

I think my biggest problem on my first time playing was navigation, the first job I got was Janitor and I spent about 30 minutes looking for it and it was just reading the sign on the wall

most stations dont have a sign to point for custodial since janitor isn't in one of the major departments, custodial is often (not always) near bridge or in one of the main hallways, and even if you cant find it, you can usually find or ask for a mop and bucket and make do

my first round where i had an Actual Job was the one where i started as a passenger, got bored, asked HoP for a job, and got assigned janitor. i spent the entire round looking for my supplies and the best i got was a trash bag and a mop bucket. i was just lost in maints for like an hour while the nukies ruined the station. funnily enough, i think being so lost is why i survived that round - i saw a nukie exactly Once, when i briefly exited a maints tunnel to investigate a dead clown

Some more advance: Suit coords are important! To toggle between none, health, and suit coords, you right click on your suit and navigate to your sensors! (Learned this recently, I personally didn't realize that suits were the actual catalyst for "suit" coords lol)

Not a comment specifically about SS14 but I've been learning /tg/station through a horrifying amalgam of shit that's been ported into it and at a certain point once you've learned enough about the game and know how to do it without having to look at guides as much, you begin to have it all click together. Like, botany is a job that benefits from all sorts of knowledge from chemistry to construction to the actual fucking job. And while overall there are tone differences between the different iterations and versions, and mechanical differences, I think they all benefit from being looked at in that way. The more you learn the more you will understand why people are obsessed with this game and the things that can happen in it. But honestly the most important skill to remember is roleplay, cause with roleplay you don't necessarily need to know how to do things to get them done.

seconding janitor as a good role for people who're new but not Brand New Playing Their First Round. in my experience, HoP tends to be pretty willing to just let random passengers have the job, and i understand why - it's hard to completely fuck up as a janitor. even if all you can find is a trash bag, you can still sorta do your job by wandering around and cleaning up all the empty snack bags and soda cans people leave lying around. it's low-risk, (relatively) low-stress, and a pretty good way to get acquainted with the controls and station layouts, since you'll be spending some time wandering around looking for messes to clean. -or looking for a mop, if you got assigned the job after arriving-

Tried SS14 out recently, my knowledge of SS13 helped quite alot. But goddamn, no matter how good you are or how much you khow. Sometimes it just up to chances. Last time i was a Traitor Chaplain, got the objective to keep a fellow traitor from salvage team alive. The entire salvage team **supposedly** got killed by the QM by plasma. (Don't exactly remember the exact detail, but QM killed all of them somehow. Who then proceed to left shortly after.) Such is life of a space man.

Man I used to play SS13 all the time, was always afraid to take major roles because I'm crap at typing lol. I've not played in like 4-5 years and just randomly remembered the game today....dude I can't wait to get back into it. Looks like with SS14 the UI is a little more user friendly and the fact I don't have to worry about being bad because I don't know the station layout is making me want back in so much more.

THANK YOU for this. When I first tried SS*13* I had no idea what to do. All the tutorials online were really bad, handwaved half the controls, were too specific, or were too general. At first I tried to do whatever the ss13 version of passenger is (i don’t remember the name) and I did nothing the entire round and was spaced. I then tried miner and got lost in space after not knowing controls. I then tried technical assistant, messed up the engine, plunged the entire station into a blackout, and panicked and left when security came. I’m probably banned from that server, I haven’t checked. I’m hoping to do better on ss14 this time!

I feel that haha. Everytime I've tried to do an engineer role on SS13, I would get absolutely terrified and just ALT+F4 if the slightest things went wrong on my end. Planning to give SS14 a go since it seems a lot more intuitive.

Thanks for this video, this might sound weird to other people but I get a kind of social anxiety about getting into role-play games like this with people I don't know. I've played very little D&D with friends but want to find groups to join on roll20 to play more and possibly build the experience to Dungeon Master for my friends, I get anxious about joining randos on roll20 too and haven't tried yet.😔 This video has definitely helped make me feel better about starting SS14 and I have an idea for a janitor character now.

One time I joined a Russian LRP server at night, I joined as janitor just to clean stuff then I got selected for captain by the commanding personnel, plot twist - I was a syndicate agent, then we got RDMed by some idiots.

Joined my first server yesterday, became a medical assistant, somehow I didn't kill anyone and saved a handful of people who were definitely going to die. I also learned I can accidentally OD patients and not to just pump them with 100cc of drugs

Had always been interested in space station 13 but it was always a little archaic for me and I never gave it enough time to actually learn it, my buddy showed me space station 14 which i didn't even know existed and we decided to give it a go and had a blast. We were both janitors who stumbled across a boxing ring and decided to try it out, I put my boxing gloves on only to remember I was a pacifist and couldn't attack. Security came along and demanded I take off the gloves but i couldn't figure out how so he beat me and hauled me off to jail :(

Welcome to Space Station 14 anyone who reads this, If you have played Space Station 13, great! you wont have much trouble. If you dont even know what that is, Your in for a ride my friend, First you will experience the most confusion ever, This is normal as the game is very random, Try to ask questions. You might feel anxious something bad will happen, Trust me, it always will and most the time there isn't really much you can do if you are a low responsibility role. So sit back and relax as you can catch a really nice view of the station burning from the comfort of your bar stool as you and the other people on station drink themselves to death!
