Extremely wet wood. I was fascinated at how it rained preety much every single day in Maui while I had the pleasure of visiting. Everything was always wet. Trees are extremely tough to stand up to all the wind and rain. I have also found that in my part of the country cutting a tree in the spring after the snow is gone and spring rains are on, it takes a lot of extra effort vs waiting until august when we haven't had rain in a month.

Those trees are in the Adrien Brody Predator movie. They filmed some of the jungle scenes in Hilo Hawaii in a forest full of gunpowder trees.

Here in TX we have wild grape vines and they can become absolutely massive. The largest single vine I've seen was over 2 ft in diameter and had overtaken a mot of 15 or 20 Post Oaks. Luckily the vines grow slow enough that most trees are able to support the weight as they grow together.

@@pacificcoastpiper3949 Yeah here in the Texas hill country we have lots of vineyards and winerys. The grapes that grow here were spread from vineyards (by birds mostly). I've tried them several times, and they're not nearly as sweet as store bought. I'm not sure if this is because the soil conditions aren't the same as a cultivated plant, or maybe those wine grapes just aren't the same as the food variety.

Hey Jacob, yesterday I saw your content about the the dead cottonwood tree at gordy’s. When you get his (big) saw when you are in the tree with Jed you ask him if he likes the chain configuration which is on that saw. Is it possible for you to make make an episode about different types of chains/blades, chainsaw dog etc. I’m pretty new in the chainsaw community and since 2 or 3 months I’m addicted to your channel. Hawaii is a state me and my wife have been to 4 different times. And each time we was so glad to get back home to NW Montana. No way in hell would we ever wanna live there 24/7. Ok to visit / stay awhile, but that’s it for us. We much prefer 4-seasons and especially winter we love.

I read (on the internet, so it's definitely true) that the gunpowder tree was named because it made good quality charcoal for use in making gunpowder.

Over here we got a tree named "pau polvora" . which is from the same family. the name means gunpowder tree because in the 18th century these trees were used for gunpowder production. They do split, crack and fall over at random indeed. but the tree "capixingui" is even worse... up to about 3inches, just hit 'm with a machete and they'll snap in half.

I know very little about the arborism (is that a word?) but spent many years working with and managing people. Jake's someone who's right up there at the top of the class when it comes to someone you'd want to work for and with knowing you'll always get a job done well and a win/win deal for both the company AND the customer. Btw, nothing like a fur creature spontaniously crawling down you to add to working with unfamiliar tree types. You handled it a lot better than most including the rat !!

If that vine sap is anything like poison ivy, than wash up ASAP & use plenty of soap. I prefer Dawn dish soap. Cause it cuts right though the oils.

Ever cut a Catalpa? If you cut and leave the limbs they will snap and pop for ever when you climb on them they don't rot easily.

Yeah brah, glad to see some action in Hawaii. Gotta get up an Albizia tree. The canopy is as wide at the tree is tall. 100 feet tall 100 feet wide. Glad I'm not the only one who has to climb through itchy Vines. We have fire ants in the trees on the big island though. Fun stuff.

You have my full respect young man. I have grandkids older so I can say that in my lifetime, seen some crazy stuff but your skill set is quite intense, very very well thought through. I have said in other comments about falling timber but I think that I might only have bested you on a few occasions where we stood inside the tree to cut it down. Those were the large castle topped cedar trees in the rainforest over around forks washington. I would not work where this was done as I just hate spiders. I am quite positive that your able to see some really large ugly ones there..... wild having a rat to scratch your neck for you/LOL

Changing your day-to-day up can be a big help. Many years ago in the '70s I was foreman for a crew of eight negative strippers in a printing plant and we were all working very solid 40-hour weeks when I had an idea, took it to management after vetting it with the boys and re-scheduled the 40-hours from five eight-hour days to four 10-hour days. Then slid the working days for the crews towards the beginnings and the ends of weeks alternately. Result? Job hours were 10 on days Mon to Thursday followed by a week of Tuesday to Friday. I had full crew on the three heaviest production days T-W-T and the guys got alternating two day weekend and four day weekends so every second weekend was guaranteed to be a four-day weekend with chill time for whatever they wanted to do, camp, fish, ski, Skidoo ( this is in Ontario, Canada ) or whatever and call-ins were iron-bound not allowed by anybody including management. And I started each week with a happy crew with a good Lead Hand. Me? I took the same hours as one of the crews and I was the one that got the day-off calls. Not many of those, though because my Lead Hands were experienced. The change in the crew was immediately felt because the two extra hours a day were nothing, the pace we were moving at but the resulting 4-day weekends meant I always had a draft of laid-back crew every week and we always crushed it on the heavy middle days. They boys loved it: The least they would get would be a normal weekend but the second weekend was always 4 days long. Not as good as vacationing away once a year but it made a visible difference in crew attitude and our production levels went up to a higher level and stayed there. No idea if they kept the set-up after I left. Yeah, a decent break is a good thing to have to look forward to and as the man said it lets you see things from a different perspective.

Check with your Liquid waste operators, ours has a compost plant where they add organics to create a compost mulch which is free for use by the public. They don't charge for dumping tree or garden waste (free of soil or rocks)!
