Congratulations on 600 subscribers! Views on political and social topics are ones that often divide us and what one person loves another hates and vice versa. I share your views on the problems of nationalism and the virtues of republicanism and it's always good to find kindred spirits. However sometimes we find that someone holds very different views and that can be awkward, disappointing and sometimes a source of conflict. I suppose this is why many people refrain from expressing such views but sometimes it's good to "show our hand" and say where we stand on important issues. I suppose the wise strategy is to try to express potentially contentious or divisive views in a measured, calm way as it is often the "rant" and sense of bitterness and anger that annoys others rather than the views themselves. As you've also suggested it's wise to try to understand why others hold different views and it is often a product of upbringing, environment and culture and sometimes misinformation rather than that person being "malicious", "bad" or "an enemy". It's always worth bearing in mind they might see us the same way and a bit of empathy, trying to take, the heat out of a situation and sometimes "agreeing to disagree" are best advised.

@@welcome12ization I'm often struck by the way that some people will express controversial opinions very forcibly to people they barely know. I could never do that. I think it's important to get to know someone and get some sense of where they stand on issues before expressing views that might be contentious. Some people though don't seem to care whether others might have different views. Offering strong opinions can be interesting and sometimes essential but needs to be done with care - there is a time and a place.
