It is nasty hot and humid in central indiana today. Unusually so! We prepped with a cooler and bought some ice ---- AND IT WORKED!!! My pullets were panting even under shade (the leghorn was the worst) but they’re laying in front of the “air conditioner” (in some wet grass, thanks to me) very content. I also gave them some frozen fruit which they demolished and have kept their water iced and with nutridrench and electrolytes. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I’m going to set up the mini cooler in the egg box with the door open tonight! I’ve been using the frozen water bottles but tonight will be much hotter.

I feel your pain. I'm in the Pensacola, Fla area and this year heat/humidity has been miserable. I take out frozen jugs twice a day and change out their water 3 times a day with frozen bottles in their waterer. I also spray water inside their runner so the ground isn't hot on their feet. I even dip them in a pool of cool water for 1 min. to help when they are panting bad. And I also have a fan on them. Anything to keep them from having a heat stroke.

I didn’t know they could eat garlic, will definitely be using it! I wonder if wild garlic works the same? I tend to pick and dehydrate wild garlic in the spring so I then have a powder that can last into winter. Then it’s free! Not that a bulb of garlic costs that much 😆

My hens that should be ready to lay eggs haven't, and I'm pretty sure it's because it's been over 100 degrees most days for the past couple months. . . Poor girls. BTW. Can't stop getting roosters... 3/5 of my first chickens have been roosters 😂 I was able to give away 2. They gave me a young one hoping it'd be a pullet. It crowed today and I knew beforehand because at this point I just know their mannerisms even when they're real young.

🙋‍♂️ suggestions I pulled from numerous channels: 👉Fall I give them extra sunflower seeds and meal worms/ grubs👉 👉Mulch natural a finer blend from a commercial nursery. Your local county grinds up mulch too. Look at the texture to see what is shredded in it and a finer non-died mix works great. A great way to keep the coop area dry and a great way to allow Mother Nature to grow natural foods for them 👉 Wood Ash (burned up sticks pine cones from the fire pit etc) and Demetrius Earth added to a covered area of the coop run that’s caged and has a 8x8 covered area of very dry and super loose dirt. I mix it up and build mound’s of this dry dirt daily. the girls are always busy wearing down the pile looking for scratch that’s mixed in the area and It’s a very large dry area were at time four girls are dust bathing at once. After a week minimum it gets retreated in the summer and after a heavy rain the perimeter always gets wet. In the colder months I retreat every other week 👉outside the dry coop area. I have a second larger pile of dirt/ compost piles about 2 feet tall and 6 feet wide that they wear down throughout the week. I rebuild the mound up a couple times throughout and that also keeps them busy. 👉Free Ranging. The whole outside perimeter of my yard has a 2-3 foot wide natural mulch bedding about 6-8 inches deep and that’s also keeps them busy. I have 6 bird feeders and they get the mix of seeds that the wild ones drop. More busy stuff to do. 👉I have plastic gallon milk jugs in shaded area around the yard with fresh water and I add a cap full of Mother Apple Cider Vinegar all year long. 👉4 inch PCV pipe with a 45 degree bend with a half-moon cap cut to allow for easy access. I use as feeders as well with a mix of 17% feed in the dry area of the coop run. One tube has crushed oyster shells 🐚 so they have access to it all year long 👉 👉Outdoor ceilings fan in that same covered 8x8 coop run for air circulation and an additional light source if need. 42 inch ceiling fan was on sale at Lowe’s for $65 dollars this summer 👉 👉Outdoor ceilings fan in that same covered 8x8 coop run for air circulation and an additional light source if need. 42 inch ceiling fan was on sale at Lowe’s for $65 dollars this summer 👉 clean the nesting area daily/ inspect clean as needed. And fresh bedding as needed. I rake the dry coop run and the dry area under the coop 3-4 times a week and refresh the dirt mounds for more busy/ distractions for the girls . I mix in both areas Demetrius earth and wood ash to keep it fresh 👉 👉mirror. A thicker mirror I put in /attached /hung to the fenced wall in that dried coop run. More distractions for the girls

Hi Daliah! Hope today is bringing you peace, harmony and love. I have a couple questions please. Question1: I have a LOT of fire ants in my area. And they are biting my chickens. I don't want them to turn into infections. How do I get rid of the fire ants out of their runner area? Can I use diatomaceous earth on the ground? Will that kill the grass? Question 2: How can you tell when the chickens are ready to mate or if they already have? Do they put off a weird smell when they do?

Yes, good grade DE is great. But try to only use it where it’s absolutely needed, like on the ant hills themselves. DE can kill beneficial insects and disrupt the microbiome of the soil so it’s important to use it very locally where needed. 🐔❤️

She sometimes poop white, sometimes hard but most of the time its slimy and frothy. He vent is always making squeaky sounds. But she also runs, eats and play. But her abdomen is inflamed and pink. I LITERALLY have tried and experimented so many homeopathic medicines on them. No effecttt. Wpuld really appreciate if you read this amd help. 😭😭😭😭 I don't wanna lose them.
