In a live show where Carlos and Cecil talked, Carlos said that he doesn't always get to listen to Cecil's show. Sometimes he would hear a broadcast from before he met Cecil, sometimes he would hear a broadcast from the future (and then he would stop listening the second he realizes what he's hearing) Maybe he learned from them that someday he will find himself back on Night Vale, or at least with Cecil again. That would explain why he seems almost unconcerned, because he KNEW that they'll be together again. He's confident that he'll get home. So might as well do as much work as he can before that happens, especially now that he got used to being there and no longer felt as helpless and scared. Heck, doing science is probably how he was coping. He felt less helpless when he had a clear goal of science, instead of just wandering around and drowning in disappointment at each glance he takes where he doesn't see an old oak door.
