Nice info and Happy Mothers Day! Just wanted to add, I use Acetone often for my finishing work. Investing in chemical gloves and a chemical mask from the home box stores I can't stress enough, should be under $20 bucks. Breathing the vapors and getting any solvents on your hands is not good. Stay safe :)

I had no clue about Acetone or what it was. But I have to clean a metal frame and now I know it is better to use acetone then mineral spirits. Thanks for this info.

When removing the adhesive used in caulking strips, an adhesive designed to resist polar solvents since water is a polar solvent, mineral spirits work far better. Gum or any type of gummy material dissolves when scrubbed with it.

I use acetone to remove natural oils from woods like bloodwood before finishing with tung oil. The tung oil won't absorb effectively if the natural oils are left in the outer layers.

I work at a textile coating factory. Mineral (or white) spirits is meant for harder solvent works while methyl ethyl ketone could be used more lightly. Spirits is irritant and needs to be used with gloves. Acetone not so much, but please clean your hands with soap and water afterwards.

Never thought of using acetone for cleaning flux residue. Will give it a try. But I do know acetone affects plastics so I wonder if it would mess up some components having plastic components (not sure which type of plastics it would affect to be honest). My main use for acetone is very specific. I use it to clean up contact adhesive residue seeping out from the edges after applying teak on melamine boards on my wood working projects. Oddly enough, from my understanding the teak I am using is mostly made of some type of PVC (comes in different thicknesses) but the acetone does not mess up the teak nor the melamine boards. I have tried it on a different quality of blockboards too. I don't know the actual material its made from but the sellers over in my country call it "gelcoat" or "polyester" boards. I prefer to stay away from it unless a customer wants it (since it tends to be cheaper) because the surface gets easily dented/pressed-in.

use isopropyl at 99% it will clean up flux residue and evaporate entirely itself without effecting the mask or fiberglass pcb or plastics much of the components, acetone will remove any mask probably in seconds.. might be able remove chip markings with it..

I used acetone in my wood stainer for a backyard fence and it seems that it made the finish darker? Am I wrong in thinking it did that, or is it because it came out more abundantly by virtue of its thinner form. That is, did I simple have more stain on the wood? Have you noticed it darkens finishes?

Can mineral spirit be used to restore hard stiff brushes??
@WelcometotheWoodsBlog3 жыл бұрын
I'd say no. I have tried before, but like I said it doesn't break down dried on paint very quickly at all. I soak my brushes in acetone to get off hard dried paint, but you have to be very careful not to get the acetone into the top of the brush where there's glue that holds in the bristles. I don't let them soak more than 15-30 minutes because I don't want the brush to absorb the acetone up its bristles into the glued area either. This will make your brush fall apart.

I had no idea mineral spirits was toxic, they tell you to use mineral spirits for cooking surfaces like cutting boards and butcher blocks to clean and seal them. 😮 I know acetone is basically finger nail polish remover, I never would’ve guessed mineral spirits were more toxic. Is that dangerous or do you just need to let it evaporate and then it’s safe?
@WelcometotheWoodsBlog3 жыл бұрын
I can't answer for sure and a quick google search didn't tell me a straight answer either. My gut tells me not to use it on food surfaces, but it does fully evaporate. I think if you've been advised by a professional you trust then it might be okay?
@ShaneZettelmier3 жыл бұрын
@@WelcometotheWoodsBlog I have no idea anymore, it seems like a lot of the things professionals have been advising us on we’re completely wrong. Lol. I just remember a long time ago in woodworking class that’s what we used to seal the boards and I’ve often been told that’s what you use to clean butcher blocks and wooden cutting boards. For some reason I always sort of thought of it as something non-toxic since people tell you to use it on food prep surfaces, but I guess people are wrong a lot. 😂 I don’t trust anybody anymore. Lol. I googled it too and I see a lot of places saying that’s what you use on it, it makes me wonder if they meant mineral oil instead of mineral spirits, I don’t know if there’s a difference but it’s kind of scary. Lol

Love your vids! Question-I wash my brushes after soaking them in mineral spirits and when I run the water through the brushes to wash them the absorbed mineral spirits ago down my drain. I don’t pour the container of Mineral spirits down the drain but whatever was left in the brush when I wash out the brush is going down the drain. Is that amount going to be dangerous? What would be a better resolution for this? Thank you in advance😊
@WelcometotheWoodsBlog3 жыл бұрын
Water doesn't actually get out mineral spirits, the same amount of mineral spirits will be residual in your brush if you rinse it or not. I'd advise you to use a towel to wipe off your brushes after soaking them in mineral spirits. Good luck!
