Your end result is better than kitchen islands that I have seen professionals install in high-end homes in Chicago. I'm not saying that it's better than every single kitchen island I've ever seen, but I'd say that the work that you do is better than MOST of the pro jobs that I've seen because you cared a lot about details and managed to design something more functional than typical kitchen cabinetry. Great work!

Very well done! I am about to try to DIY a fix on my kitchen sink cabinet thanks to a few leaks over the past 15 years (I know.. why did I wait so long). Back bottom brace is moldy/busted, sheet rock wall behind it (which is wall where counter overhangs and stools are) has some mold, etc.. so it's going to be a process. Still not entirely sure how to fix it.. plus the sink came off the counter (granite) hanging on by brackets so I gotta fix that too.

You consider yourself a carpenter? you sure? I'm a fan of your efforts and design aesthetic for sure, but not sure you're clear on what a carpenter does, using a saw not a carpenter makes you. Yes your DYI skills and willingness to tackle just about any project is definitely cool. But spend 1 day in a carpenters shop and you'll see what I mean.

Well I’ve hired three different carpenters in the past and I can now do as good of work or better than them. I guess I meant skill level/finish work. I didn’t mean to offend if you are a carpenter.

Not only is your design stunning but equally so is your amazing work ethic, knowledge and precision of woodworking, and metal fitting, along with rock laying and drainage! You are not afraid to tackle the less pleasant areas and your stick-with-it-ness for an entire project is amazing! KUDOS!!!

I think one of the things I’ve always been most impressed by is your eye for design. All your colors, textures, and layout is always really well done. I mean doing all the hard construction is pretty awesome too! Can’t wait to see what you do next. :)

Thank you! The design is my favorite part. I wish I could do more of that and less of the hard labor, but hiring out is sooo expensive!

For the lift up door, use a pneumatic lift (same thing that holds your lift gate up for a car/suv trunk/door. They are weight rated. You could also have used that as an extension to your island top with a swing down or swing out leg.

Great video. I spend a lot of time on KZbin for my home repair problems and your video was really informative regarding something I don't have any knowledge of. I haven't purchased a sander in years but now there seems to be some good quality products available and more importantly cordless which saves a lot of trouble. Your video showed me what I needed. Thanks.

I'm just gonna say it, I hate grey exteriors, it just looks dull compared to the beautiful nature that frames it. And can we talk about the kitchen shelves and how much grease/ dust is gonna gather on those bad boys and how all your dishes are just gonna be out?? Also devastated that you took beautiful wood book shelves and demolished them for kitchen cabinets that you...intentionally ripped out? The kitchen just screams for show and vacational use and not really functional. Dont get me wrong everything was well executed and inspiring but definitely some design choices that werent thought out.
@WelcometotheWoodsBlogСағат бұрын
So this kitchen is the home’s second kitchen used by guests only. I hope that helps explain some of the design choices :)

Cool looking but some of the practicality goes right out the window for aesthetics. I would much rather have cabinet space than one shelf in the kitchen for my toaster and plates. Tooeach their own really nice job on the remodeling.

Interesting story and it looks like you came to a good solution. I come to you from the land of Western Red Cedar siding. The Pacific NW. Most of our old houses around here have cedar siding of one form or another. In my experience it's all about the base coat that is in contact with the wood. If that was an oil based primer and was repainted before it failed you are golden. Anything else and your paint is going to have a shortened lifespan. I'm not sure I buy the "cedar needs to breathe" line of thinking: It just doesn't jibe with my experience. Either way, you brought it down to a bare surface and applied a quality coat on the siding. The moisture problem sounds like it might not be done with you though. I would consider buying a pinned moisture meter ($50) and monitoring the problem area. You might be able to narrow down the causes just from that.
