As you probably already discovered in the video or comments below, if one does not care to save the old frame (most cases) it's way easier to remove if you just run a circular saw across all four sides of the window. The little pieces are much easier to remove than the whole frame all at once or a full side at a time. Then just grind off what's left of the nails. Or even better, order the new window as a "retrofit" wish is double the price but will fit your old window frame exactly. Then there is no evidence the window was ever changed on the outside but it depends on what you want to spend on materials and if making new cuts on the outside is easy to hide. You obviously made the right choice under the circumstances. Thanks for the videos Melissa !

I gutted the first floor bathroom 6 years ago and replaced the tub with a solid surface shower pan. I ordered a (2) crankout casement windows just about the same as you installed. I had created recessed spaces for storage of shampoo, etc and was tiled with accent pieces and prior to installing the cement backboard I Red Guarded the entire back wall. The bathroom space was rewired for power vent as well as additional accent lights. I bought all the material and ceramic tile for the shower and 38" high the rest of the room. I hired a tradesman to install the tiles and marble floor as I had tiled and floored the upstair bathroom 15 years prior. It was a wise move as the tiler was their a full week making intricate cuts to do a super finished job. I did hire a pro to install the frameless 1/2" glass shower doors but I plumbed the vanity, toilet, and shower pan drain as well as install the Symmons shower and valve and faucet fixtures. Well now I am going to redo the upstairs in spring which as going to be a duplicate of the downstairs with colors being different. I already have the window ordered from 6 years ago as well as Symmons shower valve and faucet and back board stored in the basement floor because of a 10% off Lowes coupon I used then. Long story short after watching your impressive video I am going to resize that space with the smaller window myself. I will look with interest for the rest of your bathroom completion on your web site.

I considered doing that, but where I live you cannot put a recessed niche in an exterior wall. The wall needs more insulation for the cold months.

Good job, both on the construction and the video. I know that work pants with tool pockets and tool belts are marketed towards men and may feel silly, but it's honestly so much easier to manage tools when working on ladders ❤

I'm inspired! Every contractor/handyman (9 total) that I've called talk at me like I'm a dummy. I'm not. I'm just old and tired of fixing my house. I ordered windows of the same width, just 5 inches shorter. I refuse to pay someone $800 to remove, resize, and install one window! I could have had replacement winows installed for less than the cost of their labor. That didn't even include drywall or the siding (I have the siding). I may make an attempt in the spring....but I know there is rotted wood at the sill...alas, just a little extra work. :) Thank you for the awesome video! Great detail and right on point. Girls rock🎉

If you're going to be using flashing tape in the future you might get yourself a j-roller to roll down the flashing tape. The adhesive has to have some pressure on it to be effective. Btw, 14:00 the bottom flange is usually left un-flashed (so any moisture, water, on the sill, as little as it is, is able to drip out & down instead of being trapped). The bottom flange still rests on flashing tape you applied to the sill specifically the section of flashing tape that makes a 90° turn onto the outside wall and house wrap. Window manufacturers specify running a bead of silicone on the side and top flanges. You can silicone the bottom flange too, but with just spots of silicone, not a continuous bead. Last but not least, Awesome!

just a suggestion, but you might want to be a little more careful with ladder work. Your ladder base looks very far from the house wall, which sometimes there is no choice for - but then you have to use anchor lines, plus something to seriously hold down the base. If the ladder goes down, and you fall 7' or 10' you can get very seriously injured, which is not fun. Also, whenever possible, when working at the top of a ladder, hold on to the ladder with one hand and work with the other hand - again, not always possible but very often it is, if you try.

Not criticizing…Should’ve put house wrap over sill into house before installing window, then zip tape. With the outside trim so flush with the siding I would’ve put some flashing up top. Thats a big project, good job!! I know contractors that you put to shame.

Great job!! The only small recommendation I have is to ALWAYS wear cheap latex gloves when using the spray insulating foam in a can. That stuff is nasty! As you said, you don't want to get it on your hands. If you do, nothing will remove it! Not soap, WD40, thinner, nothing will work! You just have to wait DAYS until it wears off your hands naturally. Been there, done that! :-(

Anyway, I just spent the whole day painting my kitchen and back mud room. It's helpful to see I'm not the only one working right now. But here's how I have you beat - I just listen to books on Audible. No having to stop and talk to my camera, readjust it, etc. To be fair, home improvement isn't a hustle for me - yet! Anyway, time for a shower. No windows, though.
