Hey that’s a 5.7 hemi crank, nice!
@josefthomas81926 жыл бұрын
It is called submerged arc welding and the sand is the flux
@melaniew77msn6 жыл бұрын
Bartholomew Horatio Brunel maybe for you. I could weld that by hand and it would be just fine. 7018 stick rod or TIG with ER-70S-6. I have a welding positioner but I could weld that without using the positioner.

hey tdej80, i have this worn out suzuki samurai crank shaft (journal #1 is about 1mm both sides gone)... i have my TIG... can i build up this thing using the filler you mentioned?
@melaniew77msn6 жыл бұрын
Tsurtz Hill I am not familiar with that crank. If it is forged steel 7018 or ER-70S-6 will work. If it is cast iron you will need 99 nickel rod or the machinable muggy weld or crown alloy T-220. The T-220 would work well on a forged crank because it will be harder and stronger than the steel filler metal selections. Cast or forged you will want to pre-heat. If you get back to me with some more info I will do my best to point you in the right direction.
@melaniew77msn6 жыл бұрын
please forgive my oversight it could be cast steel also.

Thanks a lot tdej80 for the info... I will, if ever I decide to do it. -Have a nice day

We use a carbon rod in the oil holes to keep from welding the oil holes up. Also wondering why not hold the rear of the crank? Does that help it from bending?

how do you hardened the surface ? otherwise is soft as butter.... right ? :)

though it looks like sand it is actually flux...980 flux with a mild steel wire is what I use on a Gleason m1 machine...
@scotttipps81556 жыл бұрын
Its called submerged arc welding or S.A.W. proccess. The sand is actually flux covering the wire being applied
@overbored6176 жыл бұрын
it's the same as the flux that is covering the welding rod
@BehzadEghtesad Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Is this arc welding ?
@melaniew77msn6 жыл бұрын
I would think he would use some ceramic tape over the oil passages to insure no flux works its way into places it is not wanted.

Hi Sir, how are you doing? I'm from Germany and I love the work and effort you're putting into this old crankshaft this is pure craftsmanship, wonderful! I wonder if you would be able to weld and polish and align and balance a BMW V8 crankshaft for me? How much would you charge and would you accept my crankshaft for repairs if I sent it to you from Germany? Would love to hear from you! Best wishes from Germany, Ahmad

@skylinefever2 жыл бұрын
Typically you can't DIY that, you need to take your crank to an automotive machine shop with the right equipment.

So much for the fillet hardness I wouldn’t put any torque on this sucker or it would crack in two

There is probably a good reason for this proces but isn,t TIG a better proces for this? Just saying there would be no more flux to worry about, the deposit would be perfect and You could see what You are welding
