My 81 yo dad passed away Nov 30th and we was a retired pipeline welder of 40 years, I came across your videos and a lot of what you are doing brings back memories. I helped him build a bed when I was in high school. I worked two summers with him as a helper (long enough to realize I didn't want to be a welder!) He thought it would make me want to go to college. I ended up an electrician instead! The comment about grinding towards windows reminded me of the coaching I got before I went on the first job with him. He told me the exact same thing. He used to call it "Buckshot'. He would tell me to make sure and fold in his side mirrors too for the same reason. He ran the same SA200 he bought new in 1976 when he went from a fab shop to rig welding.He only had that machine for the whole 40 years. He said he thought about having one chopped but heard other guys had trouble with them overheating (no such thing as aluminum radiators and not many electric fans yet). He only had three trucks (73 Ford F350 with a built 428, 80 GMC C30 with a buitl 454 and an 89 Chevy C30 with a stock 350) and never financed any of them. it was a good thing too since when Reagan was president the economy went to shit and he had to work single hand for a while and probably would have lost anything he financed.

When you grind or weld around glass in the future throw a welding blanket over it or go get you some 3m sticky paper its not cheap but it protects your glass from sparks. Beds looking real good.
@davidrios90946 жыл бұрын
My truck got all Windows the same way even my dually fenders side bed. Another thing that helps break those flats is have an angle iron breaking from the inside out either on the truck like you did or on the ground. Over all bed coming it great
@fuentesartist69396 жыл бұрын
I've made a living for years with tools and trucks and the more tools you can carry the more versatile you are the faster you can work the better work you can do the more money you make. Having a bob bed like that just puts less money in your pocket

Hey Jacob how about expanded metal bottom on the jack box... or some large hole plate so all the dirt and water and snow will drain out

John C oh very true
@kennysalisbury28106 жыл бұрын
I was also gonna put in my 2 cents about that third bend , take yer clamp that you"ve got attached to the bed then flip yer metal on it"s side , using a piece of 2x2 angle iron or your reciever hitch which ever is handy at the time ,clamped off to yer upright and then just walk it around .

Why did you not use the brake you made that mounts on the back of your welding truck to bend your metal?
@JacobSchofield6 жыл бұрын
Robert Godwin it didn’t work near as good as I had hoped failed design just need to rebuild it now with what I learned.

To make a good drain in a tool box, drill a 3/8” or 1/2” hole, heat the area then hit with a ball peen, peen end in the hole, nice and clean drain

please tell me why you use top tool boxes you have to unload every time u go in them

Question, when you measure to brake the sides of the boxes do you add a 1/16" to make up for the bend?
@JacobSchofield6 жыл бұрын
Charles Million I don’t that’s why I left the one side long so I could cut it for the final fit
@justinschmidt30266 жыл бұрын

I have 2000 Chevy Silverado reg cab that body style. I'm not around pipe work . I have a 8-1/2' flat bed carring 305g small twin tank air compressor tourch and couple tool boxes . I seem to be needing more space on the bed. Plus no room for anyone to ride in the cab. If my truck didn't have 306,000 miles I would think about the dully converion
