THANKS TO ALL for your suggestions and tips for how to fix this! I appreciate all the comments and recommendations! How did I do?
Here's Part1 of attempting to weld the Cast Iron Hydraulic Reservoir from my Oliver 1855. Trying to do a combination of all the techniques I've found so we'll see if it works!

That's impressive! I would never attempt to weld cast. From what I know about welding cast you've done everything right. I hope it works for ya! Thanks for the video

Thanks! We'll see how impressive it is once I bolt it back together and see if it leaks lol! Due to the below-average temperatures this past weekend I didn't think the RTV would stick so I'm waiting for a 50degree day later this week. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Well it's worth a shot! Hopefully it will fix it haha. Cast and aluminum are a bear to weld with stick, I know that haha!

Yeah, I'm not really out anything if it doesn't work! I'm hopeful the nickel rod will work out. Hope to be bolting her back together tomorrow and get a video out early next week to show the results. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Cast iron is a pain to weld, I know that. You got a tight spot that’s for certain. I have a slight feeling my 1950 will do this to me.

Yes it is!! I sure hope this works out! I hope to be finding out this weekend if it worked or not and get a video posted next week sometime. I think it's totally avoidable as long as the 3pt is set correctly and always has that little bit of free-play at the top of the stroke. I'm leaning more and more toward maladjustment than some outside force that broke this one the more I read about issues with it. But look forward to a video early next week of how it turned out! Thanks for watching and commenting!

just gonna tell you the j b weld aint like it used to be in the tubes like you have.i went to the j b weld putty kind where you pinch off then knead it til the grey putty mixes with black thats in the middle of the round cylinder shape.man its 50 times better.the old kind just wont harden up any more.but brazing is best for what your doin besides mig weld.it shld work.cast with stick heated very hot then right rod.look up old timers way.tig with right rod or braze with right rod.youll gt it

Suggestions that are a lot of work: take all of the other parts off the assembly until you just have the bare block, the room you weld inside shouldn't have any windows or doors open, no drafts at all, preheat, preheat, preheat -- the entire casting ideally should be over 1000F and its temperature needs to be stable for several hours on a large casting, the casting needs to be wrapped in layers of fireproof blankets, after it's welded/brazed the casting has to cool very slowly (figure 18 hours to cool under layers of blanket before it back to room temperature) -- consider brazing with brass filler. Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions! Little late now but appreciated nonetheless! I have already welded on it and I'll be posting a video next week of how it turned out. Hopefully I'll be putting it back together this weekend. Unfortunately I don't have most of what you're suggesting, just farmer fixes for me lol! I did pack every rag I had around on it and left it for 2 days. I'll keep this in mind if I ever have to do something like this again. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Can you believe youtube flagged your link to Keith's video saying it had "bad words" in it lololol!! Anyway, I've subscribed to Keith's channel for a couple years now and he's awesome!!! He's exactly who I was thinking of while I was heating that up and packing rags around it lol! If anyone else is reading these comments and interested in excellent machining videos, be sure to check out his channel!

@@burningdinosaurs -- Was it bad words? Or because I included a link in a comment? The default setting, unless you change it, is to flag any comment that includes a link, you can change that if you want for your channel.

Yeah, I'm sure it was the link but I think it's funny how it said it was "bad words" lol. I'll have to look for that setting. Thanks!

I was getting a leak on the back of the 1755 I've been working on and when I discovered the 3 point arms were topped out, I thought of this. I got lucky. Someone had too long of bolts behind the top link, so that wasn't clamped the best, and I think the pressure from the lift was distorting the housing, causing seepage at the gasket. I was so hoping I didn't have to do what you did here. I adjusted the lift height, got a shorter pair of bolts in there, and it has been dry for over 24 hours. Color me happy!

OH MAN! That's pretty funny (I hope!). So, you had predicted that mine would seal up fine but I'd discover another leak somewhere else... well... I think it'll finally be warm enough this weekend to head back out and I'll have a video coming, we'll have to see how close your prediction was lol! Let's just say I've got some drip pans sitting under it right now :( . Sooo over winter and ready to get back out in the shop again!

I swear that's how it works. I did that clutch job, might as well seal up the steering box, replace the injector boots, I even came up with a way to replace the compression fittings at the hydraulic relief valve with JIC fittings. Fire it up and everything I worked on is dry, but now the fuel tank is leaking, plus the aforementioned hydraulic unit leak. Got those sealed up, there isn't a drop on the concrete. Maybe I shouldn't start it aain! Lol!

@@ThatOliverGuyChris Ha!! So right! Better just slowly back away from it lol!! I tend to think how Detroit Diesel owners do... If there ain't oil UNDER them, there ain't oil IN them lol! I just tend to have leaks with my stuff. Meh - whatcha gunna do? I'm OK with it. Hey, could you do a video on setting the lift height sometime? I was looking through a book and not sure I've got it all figured out. I still need to do on that 1855. I remember doing it on my 1650, but don't know I've ever done a large frame 55 series. If not, no big deal, I'll mess around until I get it figured out. Thanks!
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about that as l did it. I had to look that one up, as I've never had to adjust a large frame 55 series before.

To get you going for now, between the arm that comes up from the left lower link and the arm that comes out of the left side of the hydraulic unit is a 3/8" rod that runs horizontally. Shorten that rod by adjusting the 2 jam nuts to lower the maximum lift point. Lengthen the rod to raise the maximum lift point. You want to be able to lift the arms at least another half inch beyond the maximum height.

Great video! Love the disclaimer at the beginning 😆 I can’t weld at all so I wouldn’t know where to start. You may check out Michael J Berg here on KZbin, he welds cast and all kinds of stuff! Met him at Bunyan, awesome guy! Also love the music! Keep it up brother!

Hey thanks man! Yeah I remember him saying that. I don't remember now if I'm subscribed to him yet or not but will be in a few minutes if not. I was hoping to get the tractor going back together this weekend but with the below-average temperatures I didn't think the RTV would stick and it would all be a waste of time. Shooting for some time this week now. Thanks for watching and commenting!

unless its gonna be bearing lots of weight,or stress.ive seen it done but not myself.they drilled it about every 1/2 inch all through crack to stress relieve it as welded and it was awesome.
