Welding Cast Iron - Simplex Jack

A 5 ton Simplex jack I bought last year turned out to have a crack in it. Since it wasn't in a super critical location, I decided to re-weld it. This is my general process for welding cast iron. Your mileage may vary! Good luck!

Looks good. I’ve welded a lot of cast in my days. Some welds wonderfully. Some doesn’t lol. I would’ve done exactly what you did good job

I suspect that it is cast steel not cast iron. 7018 works great for cast steel and is lousy for cast iron. I did not get to see you grind it so my chance to positively identify it is lost. There is no advantage of using nickel rod on cast steel. Cast iron would be to weak of a material to be a jack.

Thanks for the info! as i remember the grinding sparks were fairly yellow, with no sparkles or fuzzies at the end of the spark, but i was also grinding through the old weld metal. Good point on material strength too. So can cast steel be welded like normal steel? I wonder why the original weld re-cracked.

@@themadmailler yes cast steel will weld up like regular carbon steel. Your description of the spark would be cast steel. Cast iron would have a very short red spark. Hard to say why the first weld broke or why it broke in the first place but grinding into the Crack is a good start in the repair then not over welding it was the second great thing you did.
