Having him build this tank for you speaks volumes for how much merit you guys have on this wonderful project. I pray many more Gregs roll by for Duracell. And on a side note... the only explanation I see for you getting the weight of the tank so wrong is the fact both of you have suoerhero strength! Aluminum is very tricky. Glad a pro helped out so much. In your installation, be wary to keep ANY dissimilar metals away or isolated to prevent corrosion. Even metallic grinding dust. Support it well to avoid point loads and potential cracks.

@martincrick215811 ай бұрын
Great episode; good to see welding in progress. Congratulations on all the successful scanning to get a tank that went in and fits in place first time - big achievement! One point of the design bothers me: you don't appear to have a pick up tube from the very bottom of the tank nor a bottom drain tap for taking fuel sediment samples. The reality is you WILL get water in there one day - from condensation, contaminated fuel supply, etc. - and you need an easy way to get it out again. Keeping the fuel dry is your best protection against diesel bug and all sorts of other fuel contamination problems that lead to major engine problems. The best is a fuel polishing system that samples from the very bottom of the tank, runs via separate filters and returns. Next best is a manual pump that samples from the very bottom of the tank into a plastic bottle you can inspect. You really don't want to have to displace your guests from their bunk, heave out the berth mattress, and open up those inspection hatches, just to have a look or to remove a small amount of water from eh base of the tank.

Yes, more Greg please!! One thing I think would be great to have on a tank is a petcock at the absolute lowest point that you could drain off any water and polish it via an independent Racor style filter.
@edfrawley435611 ай бұрын
Interesting that he said that the arc was shielded to keep contaminants out . While true the biggest "contaminant" is oxygen itself which will instantly oxidize molten aluminum ruining the weld. Its nice to see a craftsman at work. the quality of that tank is on par with the craftsmanship of the rest of the Duracell project.

I am surprised you didn't build composite fuel tanks yourself or you could have installed a fuel bladder in a fiberglass box. Good fuel bladders are capable of self sealing punctures and can be foam filled for safety and stability. The nice thing about fuel bladders is that they can be installed and removed through small access holes.
@christopherjacques965810 ай бұрын
Fuel bladders and fuel cell foam wouldn’t be comparable option considering they only have a recommended lifespan of 5 yrs.
@ChrisHarding-lk3jj10 ай бұрын
@@christopherjacques9658 Fuel bladders used in aircraft have a lifespan of 20 years or longer and I have seen aircraft fuel bladders as old as 50 years. Being that 20 years is about the minimum lifespan I wouldn't have a problem using them in a boat.
@christopherjacques965810 ай бұрын
@@ChrisHarding-lk3jj you didn’t reference aircraft grade fuel bladders in your original comment, they certainly have a greater lifespan but the extended lifespan comes with a much higher cost then the tank installed and no greater lifespan then a properly maintained aluminum tank.

If you are threading NPT often, I recommend investing in a Go-No GO Gage to take out the guess work of the thread depth. Also pipe taps will have a projection length that lets you know how deep to tap for proper sealing. 3/8 NPT projection for ISO 0.454" +/- 1/16, or you can have short and super short projections of .251-.359".

one of the things that inspires me about You Tube is the coming together of people and sharing of knowledge, bringing skill sets together to assist in making things happen - its almost a shame that authorities don't do the same thing before signing contracts, see what they are like to work with, satisfied customers etc and then make proper decisions based on fact rather than, i like the guy so must be ok and then find themselves in so much hot water - many companies do the same but don't really do enough when they could make so much success from it

Hey just want to mention that welding corner to corner yields a really pretty finished product but is not ideal from a structural point of view. Tanks should always be welded in a fillet configuration for the welds for the best strength and durability. Fortunately the tank for Duracell won't likely be subjected to a great deal of vibration or flexing so the likelihood of a corner seam failure is fairly unlikely but will not be completely immune from this type of failure down the road. Wish you all the best for all future endevours. Truly awesome gesture from the fabricator to contribute to a truly amazing project!

Good job! Now Matt needs to get some welding equipment of his own. Some might be pleasantly surprised how much aluminum welding is like doing fiberglass since they both when exposed to air start to blush in short time and then will need to be cleaned and stainless steel wire brushed again. Don't use a regular steel brush or it will leave ions behind that will prevent you from getting a good weld. To get started one needs little more than a good propane torch and some of the aluminum brazing rod from Harbor Freight. I've gotten acceptable results making cranks and handles for tools and appliances, locking pins for tool boxes, stake sides for trailers, thermostat housing repairs on marine diesel engines, radiator repairs, etc, etc using the Harbor Freight Aluminum Welding/Brazing rods. They are from just down the road and across the Skyway Bridge in Bradenton Florida. Best!
