I was watching you use the hammer and heat and I'm talking to the screen "make some weld dogs!" then about a minute later I see you made one. they sure come in handy for stuff like this. glad I could pass on some of the little knowledge I have 😁😁😁

If you get tired of cleaning tips and all the black nasty crap from acetylene switch to propane. Cuts clean and doesn’t pop and carry on like acetylene. It’s cheaper, safer, easier to access, handles dirt and rust better. Best part is, if you run out you can just go steal the bottle of your outdoor gas grill. Only thing you need is to swap to a propane/ natural gas tip for the torch. Been using it for 18 years and works great. Just a slight learning curve to lighting it because wind will blow it out. There’s a very simple trick to it. Anyone that dislikes it has very little time spent using it. I’ve cut 2” steel with it so no comments it don’t get hot enough.

Flapper discs are great for finishing work, try a twisted bristle wire wheel for removing rust prior to welding as it gets into all the little dimples where a flapper won't. Good job Captain

Hey Good mornin’ Cap’n! That spiral staircase got me kinda excited! Perhaps you found the piece you need to access the deck of the KZbin yacht? It can work both as egress and ballast too!!! But, if it turns out to not fit… all is not lost. With your mastery of metalworking skills…. You can fab up a 3 point hitch and PTO drive that allows you to mount it on the 755. Think of the opportunities an auger that size would present! You can dig a root cellar under the chick-goat barn where Wild Roots can store her canned veggies. Or, dig a shallow well for a cistern to collect roof runoff. Think how handy that would be for watering the garden or animals! Cap’n the possibilities are endless! A staircase and giant auger bit are only the beginning. Good luck on acquiring this much needed artifact! Now about those patches… looking at how much more denim jeans are worth with holes in them… I think it is only fair to advise DP that patching the holes may have reduced the resale value of the dump truck!

Kapena, thank you for the video. All the welders in Hawai`i start and finish their careers patching rust holes like this. The rust we get is so aggressive it's hard to know where to get started. The first gut reaction is to condemn it, but then you just get on with it. Sometimes it is just about getting down the road to the next job.

Mike there is nothing better than learning how to weld etc when the work is for someone else. You found today that the second plate went quicker and a little easier from small errors when welding down the first one. That is how MBTS learnt centuries ago and he isn't to bad on welding. I always use stick when welding outside, but that is just my preference others would not agree, but as you say you do things your way for yourself and not to please others, and so it should be. It is a wonder that there was enough metal to alow you to weld those plates, I was sure that you would blow holes through it somewhere but you did good my friend. Not bad at all for someone who is a fulltime fireman and not an engineer. Stay safe and take care

The best part about dump bed repair is the welds just have to hold, they don't have to be pretty. I know it was a plow truck in it's previous life and out where you live they throw down salt like it will stop it from snowing but, it looks like someone got a bit too heavy handed trying to loosen stuck material with a bucket. Those clamps are really a great idea, I will be sure to keep them in mind. Welding is like truck driving, always something new to learn.

Mike, I've found that when bending steel plate, it's less time and labor consuming to score the line almost all the way through and ben the plate "towards" the scoring. You then need to fill in the line with weld, but that's so far been much quicker than any of the alternatives I've tried. The downside to this approach is if you need a sharp bend in a thick plate, you'll need to score the line wider to allow for the bend. I'd wager that it's still faster - and definitely easier - than wearing out your new flea market find trying to coax the plate inte place. ;)

The correct and easy way to install that long plate you welded to the side is to cut along the bend area about half way or maybe 2/3 through to make it easy to bend into shape. Once in place, weld along that partial cut seam and the perimeter and your done.

That bolt bend jig you used was a sweet deal, as a thought, I wonder what would happen if you foursome heavy wall pipe and a piece out of it and weld that onto jig so it would help bend a radius in the plate as you apply pressure. I usually slit the plate and I divide the plate into thirds, so if the plate is 9” wide for instance, cut the slits at 3”and 6”, here’s the thing, when I cut the slits I alternate between the slits on the length of the plate, in other words, I usually would start the slit at about 3x’s the thickness of the plate, then the slits usually would be between 3 to 5” in length, I would stagger the slits on the lines so the one line would, for instance 3” long I would go to the next line and start where I stopped on the first line and just leapfrog down the plate, clean up the slits, pull the plate into place and weld it up, weld the slits closed as a last step. Plate thickness does effect the number and length of slits. Thanks for the ride along sir.
