man alive...what a comparison video...if this doesnt show completely that the merits of a "poor-mans-positraction"...are definetly worth the labor, i dont know what will....great video...im sure the boys have figured out tho, a turn at high speeds on dry pavement is a different bird altogether too...to my knowledge nascar still uses open or unlocked diffs on the super-speedways for that very reason....but its always kool when a mentor has already crossed the bridge in question, and just reaches into his files and says, here ya go.....once again the dad spending time with his sons cant miss, although its sorely missing from our culture today, but i know i dont have to tell a former school-teacher that, who saw it everyday in the young boys faces in class.....and thanks tim...er...uhm....i mean...chud 327...kutgw!!!!

Very interesting OP. I wish someone someday would explain why the designers of these rear ends decided not to lock them in the first place? The so called positrac rear ends are anything but, and have always frustrated me in a slippery spot, weather it be on my lawn tractor or in my pickup truck. It seems so stupid but they must have had a reason which I can not figure out.
@chud3276 жыл бұрын
I don't know, but maybe a locked rear would tear up the grass a bit when you turn. I would like to have a lock button on the dash or a lever like on my tractor. I had a 2wd Blazer with a factory locker, it was so helpful and I would have paid extra for it. It was not full time locked and would not tear up grass while turning, that would be a super addition to anything with 4 wheels... Thanks for watching.
@keithcommuneswithhorses13216 жыл бұрын
You could be right. It would be interesting to see a locker mow grass and see if that is actually the case, What I know for sure is, the people who make these things think every lawn is completely flat, and the ground perfectly level and grass all uniform. But in my 50 something years, I've never had a lawn like that. They have all been uneven, bumpy, hills, slopes, and the worst problem is the deck height adjustment. I've never had a lawn where I've been able to lower the deck lower than the second highest notch. Like these idiots think ppl are mowing golf courses with their mowers??? FYI I just found this: 'The reason you'd want the wheels to rotate at different speeds is so when the car turns, the outer wheels will move faster than the inner ones'. HM, OK, THEN THIS: 'The disadvantage to this is that if one or more wheels have lost contact with the road -- for example, if you're bumping over rocks in an off-road vehicle -- the wheel that no longer is in contact with the road will be spinning away as if it's on the ground. Now, why would that be a problem? Because in my experience, when you get in a slippery spot, only ONE wheel turns AT ALL. THe other drive wheel NEVER turns and that's why it's so easy to get stuck. I've seen this problem even in so called four wheel drive machines. Unless the differentials are locked on both axles, only one wheel turns per axle. I've seen four wheel snow plow trucks get stuck, because only one front and one rear wheel turn. Then they have to get out and lock the diff's to get unstuck. IT's a crazy world.
@chud3276 жыл бұрын
Best reply lately! You are right about they must think we all live on golf courses, I don't either. And when you are stuck, the tire with the least traction is the one that spins, that is why you are stuck. In out last TroyBilt video, it was going through the ditches with one of the back tires up in the air and that was my favorite part!
@seedlessgrapes26056 жыл бұрын
these are for mowing grass and if you had a spool door locked rear end when turning it would scuff up the surface of the grass especially on fine and high-end grasses so that is why they did it also to have a much tighter turning radius which was probably the number one reason I'm glad I could answer that for you
@jackdoorley70006 жыл бұрын

I don't think a spicer would hold for that. Mine sure wouldn't. You can't do a welded locker for them, tho, because the spider gears are so small the weld won't grab.
