We’re all planted as of today. So we did go a few days over our June 1st deadline. The fertility packages took off once we received some heat, we ended up a little light as far as tonnage, still waiting for test results to give us hard data. Despite having ground in transition, and transitioned ground with a period of development ahead of it, I’m totally fine with where we are. To be frank, this is all a dream that will come together after I’m gone. Not that great things aren’t happening now and will continue to happen. But that 10-12% SOM of restored simulated tall grass prairie to be sustained, not regen… it’s a dream for my grandkids, and my own kids are still kids, it will be awhile before they bring on the generation to follow them. It’s like planting trees. It takes time. It shows your character, to put time and effort into things for future generations. But I get the benefit of doing it. Farming is fun for me. Sure, equipment and fuel prices are terrible right now, but to be free of the bonds of chemical companies feels pretty darn good. My 3 points to share about my operation today are as follows. 1.) Ridiculous Capacity. I achieve it by custom planting soybeans, which pays for the extra planting capacity. I achieve it on the harvest end by partnering with a custom harvester. I buy equipment to lease back to him. When it needs to go in, it goes in NOW, and when it needs to come out, we get it out NOW. Radio frequency drying helps a lot with that, it dries it and puts it in the bin as fast as we pour it in. One old retired farmer that lives by where our most northern fields are calls us the big yellow and green circus that comes to town twice per year. 2.) Nothing ever gets even a little thirsty due to continual 24/7 application of moisture and fertility 120’ at a time with RTK autonomy using Y drops. Think 360 rain, only using linear irrigation from a modified sprayer. 3.) I love high yields, but I love a yield based on what the ground can spare and still regenerate a lot more. HOWEVER, I strive to put a standard of production on every acre that I can use to measure results and evaluate how well we are doing our job. If one isn’t obsessed with it, they can’t do what we do. It has to be ones passion.
