The mechanic with the robot parts and monster meat in this one is actually designed to let you customize your party for different playstyles. The character classes exist on a slider of Robot--Cyborg--Human--Mutant--Monster, and using Robot Parts moves the character one notch to the left, and Monster Meat moves the character one notch to the right. Since you start off with two humans and two mutants in this one, rather than building a party from scratch, it gives you options for building your party in spite of being stuck with pregen characters.

I got this game when i was 6. I went through many many middle of the night hours playing this game. I could barely read at the time so my mom would help me read what was happening but i loved this game. I died a million times and never got bored.

I think the simulator is more for saving time of players who like to grind early. Now instead of roaming around until they stumble into a random battle they can just run to the simulator. I usually sim to level 3 or 4 before leaving the first town. This game is very different from the first two IMO but its a difference the Gameboy JRPG library needed especially in the US where its normal leveling and battle system actually made it pretty unique among JRPGs available for the Gameboy in the US. Its my second favorite of the Gameboy trilogy.

The DS remake of this one is even better in my opinion, shame it wasn't released officially in the West. Well, this was a good run. After that, Romancing Saga was a huge success, but pretty much just in Japan (though nowadays they're localized too, at least), and I think Frontier 1 and 2 were similarly successful, at least in Japan. Well, we'll see what happens with Emerald Beyond, hopefully it revives the series.

I wish they would remaster Frontier II already. Its the only Saga game released in the US I have never owned because by the time I got a PS2 (I skipped the fifth gen consoles completely) I could never find the Frontier games in the wild. I got the Romancing Saga remasters and the Frontier I remake now I just need them to remaster II.

I'm playing this right now! It's ok, I think FFL 2 is the best so far
