Guitar Center really ticked me off last Saturday. Went in to a local one here in California for a couple of packs of Power Slinky’s, saw a Surf Green Gretsch Double Jet on the wall. Cool, I thought, pulled it down and immediately noticed an eraser sized ding in the back of the neck, and a light crack by the nut. Whatever, I sit down and play it a bit, put it in tune, decide I really like it. At this point I notice a 1/8” x 1/2” chunk of missing finish on the face on the bass side horn and a pretty good crack along the side which must have been the impact that damaged the top. Still, whatever it plays and sounds great. I love a challenge and a tinkering project. So I put it away, and go to the counter to pay for my strings. Long story short, I asked if they would knock a few bucks off it because of the damage, they say no because that model is already on sale. Let me get this straight, you’re gonna sell a damned guitar for the same price as one not damaged , and asking for a discount for damaged goods is “double dipping “ for a discount. Their words. As of today, it’s still on the wall, still for sale for the undamaged price. Guitar Center has lost my business for good. Avoid the Chico California Guitar Center at all costs.

Royalty teed me off. I will say, I did speak to a nice gentleman on the phone, he apologized profusely and said he was sending me some strings as a bit of a recompense, but that guitar is still on the wall, still damaged, and still the same price as it’s undamaged counterparts. It’s not about me wanting the guitar now, it’s more to me the idea an unsuspecting kid is going to pay full price for it.

doesn't even look like it would require a professional luthier. Just squirt as much Titebond in that crack as possible and clamp it for a couple days, should be good as new! I actually did a home repair when my 94' LPS 'fell' off the stand and suffered a neck break, and other than a scar across the headstock veneer it's held up great for a few years already with no sign of the repair ever failing! Having built and repaired guitars I want to suggest the problem with this guitar is the neck tenon glue joint is failing. Either not enough glue or even forgot to put glue on the bottom of the tenon or bad fit. So just injecting glue into this won't fix it. The original glue will seal the wood so new injected glue will not hold. It unfortunately needs the neck with tenon removed, glue residue cleaned out and reset properly.

Question? What is the consensus of "tune o matic" bridges or the " harmonica" type??? was thinking of changing my tune o matic to harmonica type on my LP?
@tanczene3824
@tanczene3824 10 ай бұрын
From a technical standpoint, the harmonica is way better, it gives you a wider range of intonation possibilities, since the saddles have a lot more travel, and it's also a little more robust, so I would guess it's less prone to collapse on the long run, than a tune-o-matic. They are mounted differently though, and I'm not sure a drop in part exist that you could just swap out without permanent modifications.

That’s criminal to strip the thing down and part it out. Always chasing the dollars. Sometimes a guitar just needs a little TLC. This guitar looks and sounds great. I have to agree… We keep talking about mojo mojo mojo. It’s Guitar is what it is. It has mojo. So you glue it up again? What’s wrong with that now? Of course… The question is… Could you sell it to someone in that condition with two brakes for what it’s really worth… If you consider the parts? that’s a tough question. You almost think it will be worth finding the person who’s gonna play it and love it and make the most beautiful music with it. And sell it for a reasonable price. Force is no guarantee that they’re not gonna part it out. Is it capitalism, or is it human nature? It’s just a bummer all around. I do wonder where he paid for it.

Heel breaks is probably more common now like this early 80s you show, for which heel breaks were ultra rare. The headstock breaks are becoming annoyingly frequent, so heels will follow. The Moe Curly and whoever effect, cant remember the third one, oh yes it was Larry, but Larry also left for Sire I think after Curly left. So only Moe is left. The hype is way-way better now, but a Norlin Gibson in the end is better than the current Baloney that seemingly cant even stay in tune. I will stick with my old Gibsons thank you very much.

@@rockinrob2004 Yeah that's pretty common with Trogly. I have went to his Reverb account and his email account. before on several occasions. to check on an item I was interested in. and it was sold even sometimes right from the episode that was airing. a person has to be pretty fast sometimes when making a deal with Austin. something else I think happens is Trogly puts the item up for sale at the time when he's making the video. and sometimes there's a gap from when he makes the video and when it airs. so the guitar he's documenting is likely already sold. to people that were shopping on reverb or at his email address. Trogly is a good businessman first and foremost. I remember he had a really nice LP supreme during an unboxing episode. and he said he was going to document it. but someone seen it on the unboxing episode and purchased it, and it wasn't documented. I sorta figured that husk was already sold. however I'm sorta curious how much it sold ? although if was a killer deal I'm going to kick myself in the ass.

Sadly for this gorgeous The Paul, looks like there's no actual luthier at Guitar Centre, just guitar 'techs'. I don't buy the apology cause it's typical across industries that sales management (who brings in the cash) always underestimates what is actually needed for technical resources (who makes sure the thing works properly) and strangle the budget. Then when the obvious occurs they go: "Oh who could have expected that?". Will they send it to a proper luthier now?

Maybe someone will fix it and play it. If I cared at all about Gibson guitars I would buy it and fix it. I'm sure someone will want it despite its shortcomings. He ended up with the tail end losing a chunk that went into the control cavity. He cut out what was bad replaced it with more mahogany. Since it was a painted top he didn't worry about a maple cap. He slowly carved it back to close if not an actual carve swoop that matched the rest of the body. Must've taken 80 to 100 episodes to show the progress. When done you couldn't distinguish between the old to the new part .
