honestly one of the things that always got me the most in the last episode is that shot of Billy finally standing up against the Mindflayer because something about the framing of it makes me thing of a child trying to stand up to an angry parent?

They did Billy dirty and could have gone so much further with him. He should have joined the gang and in season 4 been the protective brother to Max and tries to make it up to here and become a better brother, THEN in the end sacrifice himself for Max as his final act. Instead it was cut short with a poof okay he snaps to his senses ad a minute later is dead. That was lazy writing.

@@ItApproaches Billy's character is a pretty good example of how to make a tragic character, the number one thing is to give them potential, make the audience see where they COULD go, make them care about this character - and then rip that away. Something that people tend to miss out this season is Max’s character arc and why she is the way she is. The fandom is split on hating her and loving her in S3 because of how she influences El. People tend to sympathize with Billy because of his father but forget to use the same reasoning when it comes to max. Max’s mother is in an abusive marriage. She doesn’t have control and she doesn’t stand up to her husband or leaves. Max stood up to Billy in season 2 so he left the kids alone. Max doesn’t want any other person to lose control of their life, she has trouble trusting men, so she thinks this is the only way.

@Jumpyman_thegamerYT

The whole reason people disliked Max here was because she was taking advantage of El, who doesn't know any better. I mean, ok, you're right, Max suffers from trauma... but she's trying to actively sabotage El and Mike's relationship. Trauma should not be an excuse to do whatever the heck you want, and not have any consequences happen to you. Same goes for Billy. Yes, he suffers from trauma, but that also doesn't mean that he isn't free from consequences for his actions.

And it's like a little mental palette cleanser for all the really stressful and awful crap that's happening at that part of the plot. The Coke placement was done to be funny/poke fun. There was Coke, then the company made New Coke (what's shown and said by Lucas to be delicious), but apparently everybody HATED New Coke, so they released "Coke Classic", which is just the original/old Coke rebranded. lol I was born in the early 80's, but I don't remember this myself, wish I did. @adampoll4977 Ай бұрын
The brilliance of this series is the genuine love for the characters, ie they are all distinct, nuanced personalities without being hard-wired stereotypes and act true to character in subtle ways while still being believably human. For example: Mike gets fan flack in this and season 4 for being insensitive, yet he's proven again and again that when it comes down to it he's incredibly loyal, willing to sacrifice himself, and one of the first to put things together intuitively. He's simply very in love and struggling with feelings and hormones as WELL as interdimensional monsters. Steve is another great example, especially in contrast with Billy. In season 2 Billy keeps berating him, "You need to plant your feet" after pushing him over - but that's not Steve. Steve can bend and shift, learn and grow; hence being able to respond to Robin's confession despite his own hurt feelings. Steve is able to use agility to escape near fatal situations. He may get knocked down, but he's able to get back up. Billy, on the other hand, only knows how to confront and challenge, mistaking it for strength. In the end that's exactly what he does, plants his feet to hold back the Mind Flayer, which saves Eleven but kills him. The show writes the stories around the characters rather than forcing the characters to meet the story objectives. Oh, and that Neverending Story sequence was "chef's kiss" peak television - out of nowhere (yet a callback to episode one - "Chekov's Suzie" if you will), risky, tension-breaking... and so fricken feel-good.

That wasn't forced advertising for Coke. Back in the 80s, Coke came up with a new recipe and called it New Coke. It was a disaster, and caused a huge controversy. Lucas' New Coke commercial: I guess this was kind of an inside joke for people who remember the Coke/New Coke and Coke/Classic Coke debates of the 1980s. There was also the Pepsi Challenge (Pepsi vs. Coke). People were really divided over these issues.

I mean yeah that’s the disguise for the product placement. It’s actually a genius way to make millions off a brand, to write it in as a joke because of the time period. I respect it, but it was also soooo drawn out 😆

@@thecocoacouch it's actually kind of the opposite of a product placement, because the product it's advertising hasn't existed in decades. That advertising was basically saying that the stuff he was drinking is soooo much better than the Coke we have in stores now. It was essentially trash talking Coke as we know it today

@@rbrainsop1 You're being incredibly naive if you think this isn't product placement. Just because it's smartly done and tongue-in-cheek does not mean it isn't a paid placement. A quick Google shows that there is over $27 million worth of brand placement in Stranger Things, with Coke being by far the highest contributor.

The run part is that every season is different in tone to the previous one and that also shows in the literal "season" the season is set in. For example this was "the summer season" meaning it was more fun and felt like a typical action blockbuster. I love this season for that. It reminded me in style a bit of a "Edgar Wright" movie (though those aren't from the 80s but I can't think of a proper 80s equivalent). Season 1: Late Fall, early Winter - very cold and dark with a bit of light (Christmas). Similar to Steven King, Spielberg, ... Season 2: Halloween - creepy, intense. Similar to straight-up horror movies of the 80s (for example The Thing) and you aren't at S4 yet so I won't tell you but once you are I will write another comment. I actually think this Season had BY FAR the best ending out of any Season of Stranger Things (and honestly any show period) with the letter from Hopper and how it captured the feeling of all characters perfectly. I honestly think they COULD have ended Stranger Things with that and it would have been satisfying (although very dark and I honestly hope S5 ends the series on a more happy note). Of course, I am more than happy that they didn't do it as we got so much more amazing content after this but it just shows how amazing that whole sequence was. I personally was (of course) most affected by Will in those last scenes, especially the scene where he stares out of the car window while they drive away from Hawkins. It honestly hit me really hard and I didn't even relocate myself when I was younger (I can't imagine what this scene did to people who have experienced that) While we are on Will (and also Robin and some other characters), I think many people tend to forget that this show is still set in the 80s and while it for sure is made with nostalgia for that time period they also really don't ignore what wasn't that good during that time period. In this season specifically: 1. Very obviously the "role of women" in society. This is very obvious though Nancy but also seen through the storyline of Billy's mother. She needed to leave his father because of abuse but because she was the mother she couldn't take Billy with her (take him away from his father) as from what I understand during that time men had the upper hand 2. The position of LGBTQ+ (or in the two specific cases gay people) in society and also general awareness of them. This is seen with Robin's moment obviously. Steve did eventually react perfectly and honestly showed even how to perfectly react today BUT they did incorporate the different Time-Periode and how bad it was by introducing the massive amount of time he needed to comprehend it and then think of how he should respond. For Will, it is obviously more subtle but I personally see it in two aspects: 1. He doesn't have any role models and therefore feels alone and doesn't fully understand how to cope with those feelings (honestly can happen today as well but was probably way more common in the 80s). 2. Mike is totally oblivious (because it simply wasn't that present in society). The "It's not my problem you don't like Girls" from your last reaction was almost certainly meant as "It's not my problem you don't like Girls YET". With his sentence he hurt Will and made him scared even though that weren't his intentions and he didn't even realize what he did. So, when you continue with S4, just don't forget that this is still playing in the 80s because in that season there are again societal issues that were big in the 80s (even if they might not be as big anymore).

Hi It's great to see you feeling and sounding better now. I really appreciate your reactions and comments A lot. I am feeling the same about season 3.... the earlier seasons although intense did not hit me like season 3 . A favorite scene for me is Susie& Dusty's song.... a Huge highlight for me . Not only can Susie sing very well but she is a genius with a sense of sarcastic humor... I can not help but Love her character. Now erica is embracing her Nerd side... she is precious . The actual teaming up in the groups just makes me feel like are all such a strong unit together that when they are apart it makes them each stronger to face things and then they unite again. I started watching Stranger Things when the second season was starting so went back and got caught up with season one and since then I have randomly started a mini collection of Stranger Things merch. The last time I was this Hooked into a series it was Game Of Thrones . Thank you so much for your channel

The Coca-Cola thing with Lucas wasn't so much forced advertisement (it's definitely still product placement) as it was a nod to the absolute insanity that happened when Coke came out with their "new" formula. I honestly couldn't do the desciption justice, I highly recommend looking up why they started calling the OG formula Coca-Cola classic 😅

Lucas going on about new Coke was a reference to the *MASSIVE* controversy about new Coke in the 80s. Coke changed their formula, and although the new Coke consistently outperformed the old Coke in blind taste tests, people were absolutely up in arms about it and furiously demanding they bring the old Coke back, which they did with CocaCola Classic. It was all over the news, and people were talking about it everywhere. As much as Lucas loved it, new Coke died a swift death and hasn't been made since the 80s. I'd say that scene wasn't an ad so much as it was pure 80s nostalgia, just like the Neverending Story theme song, the showing of Back to the Future, etc.

the reason sweet innocent characters seem to always die is to make you feel something, to give you a sense of real danger and consequences, to provide emotional weight in a low valley so that the rise to the peak feels earned and epic through loss and sacrifice all without having to lose a main character. the thrill of victory and accomplishment would not resonate as a valiant reward without knowing the real evil & risk involved overcoming the threat
@ShortThe1st

It's a good assessment but the problem with Stranger Things at least is that they have basically done this like clockwork for 3 seasons in a row, yeah it's a gut punch losing a character but it also sucks they always introduce a new character to be marked for death instead of taking an existing one, it feels like they are afraid of killing an MC.
@WHADATBOYNAMEIS
@WHADATBOYNAMEIS 23 күн бұрын
@ yet the show is wildly popular. if a main character HAS to die then isn’t that just another trope? are they not bucking a trend in all of media by doing what they are doing? up to this point in the show only barb (barely a character, more of a catalyst for nancy), bob and alexei have been one and done
@ShortThe1st
@ShortThe1st 23 күн бұрын
@@WHADATBOYNAMEIS It's more that there's always a death every season that isn't a mc and it always happens to be a new character who they make lovable and give ample screen time. They have basically conditioned us to wait for it to happen so it becomes a little predictable. I don't think killing off MCs is tropy at all.
