The Safety Third is a very actionable in an industrial sense and very depressing. The moment I heard the term "dessicant" I knew what it was. Kitty litter isn't a dessicant, it's just an absorbent material (such as bentonite clay or, increasingly, recycled paper products). Not that those entirely lack dust problems, but they sure as hell aren't in the same league as anhydrous silica. This feels kind of like that time a waste transportation sub-contractor (Russell Bliss) used an oily mystery chemical he was paid in his day-job to get rid of (by the chemical manufacturer who had just stopped making Agent Orange) in his side hustle, dust abatement on roads in and around Times Beach, Missouri. The chemical was toxic waste and mostly consisted of dioxin. The entire town ended up being declared unfit for human habitation. It was a very off-label use, and so is the use of the powder mentioned in this Safety Third. Roz' screen name is do not eat, which is coincidentally (or not) the exact same message printed all over those anti-humidity sachets you find in various products which contain the same stuff as in this Safety Third.

Those three Atlanta Solidarity Fund workers, at the bail hearing the judge is quoted as saying “I don’t find it really impressive - there’s not a lot of meat on these bones” They were granted bail, ($15k each, I think?) and people stepped up to help pay (fuck your fear tactics, pigs!) so they’re out now.
@SurelyYewJest
@SurelyYewJest Жыл бұрын
Ya but now they'll F with bail rates to make them crazy high for the most minor of offenses - and really, under Fascism very little is considered minor because EVERYTHING upsets that forced order. They will also ensure that bail must be posted in uniquely extractive and inconvenient ways so that anyone south of the .001% is cowed into being a subsistence-earning robot. This is exactly why the anti-choice movement was and remains so dangerous, and nobody took it seriously enough. Just like lopping off any law that allowed women's repro health services to be obtained, to either outright outlaw or indirectly curtail those activities, they will gleefully lop off any law and any others attached to it that allow for any level of actual dissent and freedom, and isn't in the service of forcing hundreds of millions to toil for the few hundred that own everything. The errant boiling frog analogy isn't even appropriate because the question now is just how vigorous the boil is.

******I have a few but VERY important informational corrections****** (the Oldsmobile discussed in this episode is my actual car) -This engine did not start life as a Chevy 350 but an Oldsmobile 350 (namely a Gen 2 Oldsmobile V8 block). These engines (while sharing similar displacement) have little in common with each (the Chevy 350 & Olds 350). Block casting, valve angle, oil pump, pickup tube and a myriad of other things (not to mention the need for a BOP or metric transmission bell housing instead of the standard Chevrolet pattern) are entirely different & separate from Chevrolet . I hate to nitpick but these engines were developed completely independently & share no parts. The LF9 (Olds diesel) comes from the Olds 350 & actually shares a lot of things with the 307 (like the stupid oil pickup). TL;DR the Oldsmobile 350 has nothing to do with the Chevy 350, common misconception. -This point was said in passing but it's worth adding that the engineers who designed the engine brought the head bolt & water separator issue (among others) to GMs attention. When they were testing the prototypes, they were told to lose the water separator & use existing Oldsmobile head bolts b/c they didn't want to put in the hours to engineer better ones. At one point, the head bolts were almost looked at as wear item & there are actually dealer servicing materials talking about this, teaching techs to replace head bolts one by one as the cars went up in mileage but this was later nixed. A big part of the head bolt issue is that the bolt holes for the head bolts weren't machined to be deep enough, thus the clamping force was lessened as these engines aged. Another big problem these had were the early ones didn't have roller style lifters. -Believe it or not, a lot of the issues with this engine didn't directly stem from the engine itself but more so from the gearing choice in both the transmissions & the rear ends. This is another reason why 81+ cars seemed to have such a much higher survival rate than 80 & older cars. There is kind of a Goldie-locks zone for these; if geared too low, it would cause the car to starve out, be less efficient, and lug the motor. If geared too high, it would be much closer to the max volume limit of the Stanadyne pumps that were used. The way they were geared a lot of the pre-81 was way too agressive & it kept the RPMs higher which killed a lot of these. The fuel pumps they had in them just weren't up to the task of supplying fuel at that rate for sustained durations. -only cars from '78-80 had an EGR. EGR was removed on DX block equipped cars commonly found 81+. The Oldsmobile in this episode discussed does not have EGR. -TH200 was the base transmission option; starting in like 81' the aforementioned THM-200R4 was offered as an upgrade/option, so you either got 3 speed auto (some early cars had no lockup either) or a 3 speed with overdrive & lockup after '81. -The story with CARB gets even funnier; upon review once GM had the cars back it was noted that 6 out of the 9 cars had suffered completely different faults and 2 of the failures were never once documented in any of GMs testing up until this time. -This isn't a correction but something supplemental; there was a police department that got like 10-15 of these as police cruisers in 1980, by 1982 all but 1 had completely died. They sued GM & won. Part of the settlement was that GM had to buy the cars back at full price (more or less just an extended return policy on them), pay damages, & that they had to furnish rebates for gas powered GM vehicles (the Caprice & Malibu being the obvious choices). The city took the settlement & then proceeded to go with Ford for their police cruisers after that; the City of Eagan hasn't looked back since. -A water separator was added in '81 on SOME cars, not all got the water separator & I can't for the life of me remember what the split/delineation was for which cars did & didn't but my Olds (the one discussed in this podcast) actually has two, one factory and one aftermarket which has been bypassed. -1981 was actually the highest year of sales for the Oldsmobile diesel engine with 310,000 units being sold in America making up a little over 60% of the diesel market in the US. It's worth noting that these were actually sold outside the units states as well but GM did not publish export figures for US market cars

My friend has an 82 Toronado with the 350 DX. 500,000 miles and counting. One top end rebuild at 350,000 miles where ARP head studs were installed. Has a Racor 500FG water separator. Pump was rebuilt with a CUCV 6.2 head and rotor. He drives it every day and it starts up no problem every single time He runs it on waste motor oil, waste vegetable oil, and pretty much whatever else. With the poppet injectors of the DX engine it's not a problem. I also built one of these with DX block, O-ringed with copper head gaskets, early 78-79 pencil injector heads, EGR delete, dry sump oiling, CAT 3126 turbocharger, intercooler, billet steel splayed bolt main caps, and piston squirters in the oil pan. Makes 550 HP and revs to 6000 RPM, it's in a Tahiti jet boat. The stroke on these engines is 3.385 so they will rev if the injection pump is modified the correct way (locked timing, transfer pump delete, variable fuel pressure regulator, and Peninsular Marine head and rotor). They are not bad engines at all and that reputation just keeps them cheap for me and my friends. Nobody will buy them, especially with that many miles on them. My friend's stock one gets 40 mpg on the highway. The 4.3 V6 was even better with 6 head bolts per cylinder, I just haven't been able to get my hands on one to build yet, I would really love to have an 85 model to play around with.

My favorite fun fact about Oldsmobile is about the 1903 American road trip. The first to drive across the US in a car was Horatio Jackson and Sewall Crocker in a Winton touring car named "Vermont". Second place went to the attempt made by the Packard car company, which despite being better prepared was slowed down because they decided to take a route that made for better pictures but was harder to traverse. Oldsmobile came third but when they got to New York they dipped their tires in the Atlantic so they could claim they were the first to drive "from one ocean to the other".

Former diesel engine warranty engineer: I once handled a technical support call where a snowcat in Antarctica was having issues. It had been fed a steady diet of JP5 or JP6. Being an older mechanically injected engine it would in fact run on jet fuel (kerosene) which is more wax-resistent than diesel in cold temperatures. Unfortunately they didn't read the fine print, jet fuel was approved for military applications under emergency use (war/combat) WITH APPROPRIATE LUBRICITY ADDITIVES...because diesel fuel acts as a lubricant for the tiny clearances in the high pressure pump and injectors. Using jet fuel (thinner and less oily than diesel), the injectors and pumps had worn themselves to point where they could no longer generate the extremely high pressures needed for proper atomization of the fuel and thus the snowcat would not start or run very well. Old (purely mechanical) diesels can run on almost any hydrocarbon, but only for a while. Diesel fuel could be diluted with used motor oil, old fry grease, straight soybean or rapeseed (canola) oil with little outward signs of degradation...until...

Commenting again because at 52:00 y'all just described Edison Motors, a new Canadian truck company which plans to retrofit old trucks with new frames, a ton of batteries and motors, and a Cat diesel generator to make hybrid off-highway logging trucks and similar. They're currently building the first prototype for their original design as well as a trailer covered in solar panels, and they've done 1 or 2 old truck retrofits which are just one of the coolest things ever.

46:20 Diesel exhaust actually has a good chunk of water in it, cause water and CO2 are the main by products of hydrocarbon combustion. And since most of the mass of the water is the oxygen, which you are getting free from the air, you get a surprising large amount. Burning 1 pound of diesel produces 1.3 pounds of water. So there is plenty of water to grab if you could, it's just a pain to extract.

I remember reading a story from a former teenage small-town hooligan who grew up in Maine. The town's two cop cars were Olds diesels, and the fun time for a young hooligan was to stunt until the authorities showed up and then race away and inevitably leave the cops in the dust. Anyway, one night the cops decided to really press the pursuit and really get these teen rabble rousers. The storyteller said that they could see the cop car in their mirror- close, then less close, then just some lights on the horizon, and finally just a huge plume of black smoke. The cops ran the engine too hard and blew the cylinder heads off in a just catastrophic failure.

Alice - if you're looking for an awesome sounding diesel look no farther than the subject of your previous episode: the SD40-2 locomotive and its turbocharged two-stroke EMD 645 engine. No rattle and all scream. And it's a GM product, but I guess the car people didn't talk to anyone from EMD or Detroit while they were designing the Olds diesels.
@jessebrook1688
@jessebrook1688 Жыл бұрын
They didn't. Oldsmobile started it for funsies to keep their big cars relevant, since the small cars (Omega, Starfire) were selling in such low numbers compared to their division-mates. They were hoping to have it ready for 1980, by early 1976, because of some of the cost-cutting measures they were doing were taking extra time to work the kinks out of. GM management got wind of the extent of the project, sped it up so that it came out 2 years early, and that was the kiss of death. Because the Cutlass was such a hot seller, they made a down-sized V8 for it. That proved to be the rarest, as none of GM's other divisions wanted that little, powerless, engine. They considered asking the Detroit Diesel division, but when DD saw what the shape of the program was, they quickly stepped back, working on their own 4-stroke engine for trucks.
@jessebrook1688
@jessebrook1688 Жыл бұрын
Also, the engine was Olds' own 350, because all of GM's divisions worked so competitively back in the mid-1970s that each of them had their own engines. The "GM V8" idea came as the 1970s closed, and so the Chevrolet 350 became "the" 350. Up until about 1980, there was a Buick 350, a Chevrolet 350, an Olds 350, a Pontiac 350, a Chevrolet 307, an Olds 307, a Pontiac 301, and a Chevrolet 305. All of these have so many upsized and downsized variants, not to mention Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and Pontiac all had their own monster motor variants. After this diesel debacle and Cadillac's two terrible engines in a row (V8-6-4 and 4100HT), Cadillac was the only one keeping their separate engines.

That was a rough safety 3rd. A family member of mine is heavily involved in animal rescue and fostering/home placement and I can tell you right now they don’t involve themselves with anything unless they can see for themselves if a location is safe/appropriate & the people are acting ethically for both the people and the animals. The fact that there has seeemingly been no audit or inspection of this facility brings to question the validity of everything that they are doing, including where funding is going. Whomever approved the use of this material for cat litter should see jail time for sure and anyone complicit should also be held accountable. Totally inexcusable.

As a diesel mechanic, diesel fuel DOES have to be sprayed into as fine a mist as possible and thoroughly mixed with the air in the cylinder to ignite and burn fully and cleanly. There are also zero explosions in an internal combustion engine (diesel, spark ignition, and other processes like jet turbines) that is running correctly. You want the fuel/air mixture to burn, not explode. Explosions cause things like holes melting their way through pistons, ring lands cracking, and conrod bearings being hammered out the side of the conrod and into the sump.
@05Matz
@05Matz Жыл бұрын
I mean, 'detonation engines' exist in theory, with excellent performance factors and the open-ended kind is being pursued as a substitute for jet engines in the 'rotating detonation engine', but I've never heard of the fully-contained kind (analogous to a regular internal combustion engine) ever working yet, even to the highly-experimental degree rotating detonation engines do. That said, I wouldn't say something needs to be a proper detonation to count as an explosion, surely the deflagrations found in internal-combustion engines count towards the word 'explosion'? The way I heard it, detonations (spread by their own pressure wave or faster effects like light/radiation) and deflagrations (limited to the speed of heat transfer through the medium) were the two different _kinds_ of explosion.
@ChristopherHallett
@ChristopherHallett Жыл бұрын
@@05Matz Combustion of the fuel/air mixture (with the flamefront typically travelling at ~100 ft/s) is a chemically and physically different process to the mixture exploding, with significant differences in the resulting temperatures, pressures, and gaseous cavitation within the combustion chamber, and shock loading of the engine components.
