When you see a stat that most climate scientists predict global temperature by 2070 will be either 2.5°C or 3°C when before it was said 1.5°C+ is a death sentence for billions.... Well how do you not get kinda doomer on climate?

I've been obsessed with Titanic since I first saw the cover of A Night to Remember in my schools library when I was 7 years old. And as Kyle said, it's really hard to figure out why. It's an endlessly fascinating topic to me. I listened to both episodes of this and learned maybe one of two facts I didn't already know and I still greatly enjoyed these episodes.

Shoot the safety third reminds me of my folks having to get their house fumigated due to some powderpost beetles tearing into even the structural wood of their house. They're apparently tougher fuckers than termites and so needed significantly more poison. The poison absolutely killed EVERYTHING within like 10-15 feet of where the tent was. which was sad as the fumigators said only like 5 or so feet would be fine to move our potted plants.

2:34:54 i think this is what happened in the Pardubice crash that happened a month ago in czechia, where the first car of the passenger train bent into an L-shape and crushed 4 people in the car. except that happened on a straight line, i am guessing it didn't have any front crash protection then? and then a gut punch from the most efficient system of distributing goods and resources: the passenger train was run by a private company that has been around for maybe a decade, but after the crash it turned out the passenger car that was crushed was actually a ÖBB car from the 80s that just got a new paintjob and a refurbished interior.

I wish they'd covered the (possibly apocryphal) story of one of the Monte Blanc crewmen saving a mother and her baby. When the crew came ashore, they were yelling (presumably in French) at everyone who had gathered to watch the ship burning to evacuate. One of them was a First Nations woman who lived nearby, holding her baby. They tried to communicate (again, presumably in very rapid and panicked French) the danger her and her baby were in, but eventually just *_snatched the child out of her arms and kept running._* As any mother would do, she of course chased after them; reportedly, both her and her baby were the only bystanders in the area who survived

Shift Change! 😮 (Bhopal and Piper!) A number of years ago someone did a study about frequency and timing of emergency events occurring in hospital critical care units. There was a large spike in the number of incidents in the first hour or so after each shift change. (It was maybe 15 years ago--wish I could remember more.)

I don't know how this would adapt to your usual format necessarily, but I would LOVE to see your reactions to what I would like to call generally "engineering shorts with zero context." That includes the shorts on fb, insta, yt etc. that feature ~something (we're not sure exactly what) related to construction/mechanical/machines/disaster in a way that the subject is confusing, precarious or stupefying because it looks strange, wrong, or incredibly dangerous. And no context is provided in the details other than something like "wowwwwww" or "wait for what happens next 👀" And of course you wait to see what happens, the video ends, and you're not sure if you saw the thing they were telling you to wait for! Incredibly frustrating, and so I would absolutely love to see your different reactions, either your assessments of what might be taking place, serious or joking, as well as your shared annoyance when you have no idea what's going on. Love y'all
