Jess I worked a car dealerships for 45 years as a mechanic and a shop foreman. If we had a situation like this the manufacturer would normally offer you to keep the car if you can live with the situation. Or if you want they would buy the vehicle back. And normally if there is a situation where it could cause a fire. They automatically offer you to buy the vehicle from you, if there was no easy fix.

@RetNavyChiefBTC10 сағат бұрын
Got my letter yesterday, not overly concerned. I too, have had recalls on several other brands. Just had the recall on my headlight completed a month ago. It took about 9 months, for BMW to have the fix. My 2022 Transcontinental is rarely ridden in the rain and is stored in a climate controlled garage. I think we’ll all be fine. Enjoy your trip! Tip: Don’t damage your saddlebag to the point of needing replacement. I was rear ended by a thankfully, slow moving vehicle. My right saddlebag required replacement. $2800 for all the parts that make up that bag. Additionally it took 9 months to receive the parts. One of the parts itemized, pinstripe on the bag. Early 2023, BMW was blaming COVID for the parts delay

@amygardiner227813 сағат бұрын
What a great bike! I had a 2015 CB 500X until a couple years ago and I am so sorry now that I sold it! I'd had it lowered (I have a 27"-inch inseam) and put some nice Puig crash bars and foldable levers on it. It was so reliable and just plain fun to ride! Perfect for me. I sold it because I thought that I wanted something with a little more top-end power for the highway. Should have kept it. I traded it in on a Triumph Tiger 900 Low. Big mistake. It was such a pain to push it around the garage and at parking stops, with its higher center of gravity. I had no intention of taking it offroad, anyway. I traded the Tiger for a Triumph Speed Twin 900, which I love and nicely meets my requirements. But I still miss the CB 500X. Enjoy your wonderful bike!

All very strong and valid points Jess. Very happy you took the time to make this video and I hope one day the manufacturers go back to robust testing prior to release rather than continually reducing time to market in a big race against the competitors for quick sales. Personally I travel a lot to distant and remote location both on the bike and four wheel driving in Australia. I deliberately drive and ride older and simpler tech vehicles for this precise reason. If something goes wrong I can fix it on a track or road side and get myself out of trouble in most instances. Another great vis Jess well done.

I have the Classic and already received my notice. The fact BMW issued the recall before it had a fix, doubled the amount of time these bikes will be in the shop. Once for the disconnect, and once more for the fix.That seems to me that they are concerned for the customer well being. Another manufacturer may have covered up the problem until the fix was designed, manufactured, and distributed to the dealers BEFORE sending out a recall notice.

Must have had a super mom/dad with the wisdom & understanding you display on this painful issue. You are a very savvy woman to recognize our world & it's costly technology that has impacted cars, cycles , appliances & whatever. Patience... wow after all that 's been spent on this Beemer. Used to own a Commando Norton 750 , then moved up to a BMW R90 (sweetest bike) but caved into my wife's pleading to sell them as the risks with accidents vs. cars -trucks on the road (she=therapist dealing with "quads & paras" from cycle crashes). But do miss those days on "switchbacks" in CO riding. Anyway, be safe & be ever vigilant.

I'd put money on the fact that they will come up with a permanent solution. They may need some time to design and test a new seal. On the other hand they have never actually addressed the rust issue on the GS/A shafts beyond recommended more frequent maintenance.

At least with most recalls there is a known "fix" for an issue. The Harley reverse motors are crap but at least it's a fairly easy fix (heck, take the motor to an alternator shop and get it fixed for around $100). The big problem with this BMW recall is there is no fix other than remove the part. I would push back, ask them why they can't just replace the problem seal.
@Klown00114 сағат бұрын
the 'easy' fix of replacing the seal doesn't fix the core problem or if the internals did get compromised, you now just covered up a future problem. recalls having a known 'fix' isn't always as start forward as it seems and replacing the reverse motor doesn't fix the problem if the motor design is the problem. edge cases do come up that just can't be 'planned' for to happen/not happen and make it into final production. (I'm coming from the gaming industry) we have patches, hardware doesn't have that easy of a fix.
@FreewheelerLover13 сағат бұрын
@@Klown001 But the current fix, remove the gear, wouldn't you still have the same issue, that the seal may already be damaged and therefore cause a future corrosion issue? Removal just mitigates the potential of burning the bike up. It totally stinks no matter what you do.
@Klown00111 сағат бұрын
If I understood Jess correctly there is "No current fix" so removing the gear isn't a 'valid/safe' option to them presently. It does stink which is the current problem with all the tech integration, if one thing goes down the whole system is compromised. removing the gear, yes you may remove the part that could burn, but you now have a hole in the system that it wasn't meant to have that could cause more potential damage someplace else, with no real answer to the original problem being fixed, and if they find a fix they now have issues with bikes that removed the gear now having more issues so it seems like not riding bike is the 'safer' option (not ideal) but from a recall stand point their only option with the information they've collected so far.

I'm a MMI certified technician that worked as service tech and service manager in motorcycle dealerships from 1990-2012. This is not the worst recall I've seen. It's worded just like a few of starter motor recalls I've seen from three other manufacturers and it took while for them to come up with a remedy. They are trying to keep their butts covered in case of any legal action for fires.

Thanks for sharing Jess, very informative. I own a 2023 R18 and I have not received the letter just yet. I never use the reverse gear as the bike is so maneuverable and until they find the fix, I don’t plan on taking it back to the dealership just to disconnect the feature that I don’t use. You are absolutely right.. You pay a lot of money for motorbikes and cars for a lot of crap computer programs, sencores that have to control, decide and with the internet send messages for this and that. Just to call them in the workshop, and milk one's wallet for money. Earlier machines, mechanically strong technologies, created reliable vehicles.. It's like with I find that the monologue TV and radio, was more reliable than the digital one. Today, many things are often made so complicated that many tinfs can have an influence on the quality falling, which many do not see, but only see push buttons and flashing lights on a program they follow blindly..!

Man, that sucks, you think BMW would have something to get that fixed pretty promptly for people, hopefully they will make things right…eventually that is, when Ducati customers had to get their motor replaced on their new V4S, not only did they replace the motor, but they give $1500 to spend on Ducati merchandise in a dealership along with an extra two years of warranty

The rear tire on my Suzuki VStrom 800DE got recalled and Suzuki took so long to find a resolution. Two weeks ago I got a new rear tire. Give BMW some time and they will find a resolution. Good points you discussed about these overly tech bikes. I'm on a 2014 Indian Vintage with very limited tech., No radio, not computer screen, etc. While the liquid cooled bikes tend not to burn you legs, I prefer the V-Twin Air/Oil cooled bikes. That's right air AND OIL Cooled which my Vintage has. Funny thing, Indian removed that oil cooler unit on their newer 2017 & up Chiefs. Since Indian also Discontinued the Vintage I'd go for the Springfield because it's basically a full size Chief too, just with hard bags, but on a positive note, it has much less tech. I know you're not much into HD's fairly equal competitor - Indian. Not trash talking, I just like the Indian brand. I don't care much at all for all the Hi-Tech stuff. For even the 'planned trips' in 2025, I'll have my cellphone GPS, handle mounted, & I'll be just fine. I've always made it home without these add-ons. .

NOTE TO JESS: Keep the letter. Whenever you talk to the dealer about the problem, keep notes. Keep a file with the letter and the notes. IF, if, IF anything ever fails and you have all that documentation, you'll find the company much more agreeable to finding a fix. Explain to the dealer what happened when JR was on the bike. I presume the reverse is still working but making them aware that you had the problem (possibly)... if they don't say "bring it in and we'll fix it." at least you gave them a chance to do so. Document, document, document. Good luck.

It's an electric motor. If water gets in while it's running, it could short out, in which case it will blow a fuse and you'll have to push it backwards. Actually, if it was pure water, that wouldn't even happen. Rain water has electrolytes in it. That's what can make water into a conductor of electricity. As to old bikes, mfgs can still make them. They just can't change them. They're grandfathered. The KLR was such a bike until they just updated it. Pretty sure Honda's still making XLs that I used to ride in the early 80s. Saw one at a dealer recently. Still had the same little square speedo from back then. Really looks funny today.
