Jess I worked a car dealerships for 45 years as a mechanic and a shop foreman. If we had a situation like this the manufacturer would normally offer you to keep the car if you can live with the situation. Or if you want they would buy the vehicle back. And normally if there is a situation where it could cause a fire. They automatically offer you to buy the vehicle from you, if there was no easy fix.

The dealer offered me the $1000 of R18 gear as a cure for the reverse elimination. I had a 2022 Transcontinental. This issue, the headlight recall and the lack of dealerships led me to trade in my TC on a new Harley. Loved the TC, but with no fix, I, like you, couldn't believe they would recall it without a fix. Ugh!

Thanks for sharing Jess, very informative. I own a 2023 R18 and I have not received the letter just yet. I never use the reverse gear as the bike is so maneuverable and until they find the fix, I don’t plan on taking it back to the dealership just to disconnect the feature that I don’t use. It is odd that they issued a recall without a Repair ready to go. Very un BMW like ..

My understanding of reverse gears on bikes is limited, but I'm 78% sure it's just spinning the starter motor backwards. It's something you're doing for a few seconds at a time, so it's probably fine. But yeah, lots of tech on new bikes make them more expensive and harder to work on. I might want to jump off a bridge before fixing my Vmax's carbs but at least I can fix them.

I'm a MMI certified technician that worked as service tech and service manager in motorcycle dealerships from 1990-2012. This is not the worst recall I've seen. It's worded just like a few of starter motor recalls I've seen from three other manufacturers and it took while for them to come up with a remedy. They are trying to keep their butts covered in case of any legal action for fires.

What a great bike! I had a 2015 CB 500X until a couple years ago and I am so sorry now that I sold it! I'd had it lowered (I have a 27"-inch inseam) and put some nice Puig crash bars and foldable levers on it. It was so reliable and just plain fun to ride! Perfect for me. I sold it because I thought that I wanted something with a little more top-end power for the highway. Should have kept it. I traded it in on a Triumph Tiger 900 Low. Big mistake. It was such a pain to push it around the garage and at parking stops, with its higher center of gravity. I had no intention of taking it offroad, anyway. I traded the Tiger for a Triumph Speed Twin 900, which I love and nicely meets my requirements. But I still miss the CB 500X. Enjoy your wonderful bike!

NOTE TO JESS: Keep the letter. Whenever you talk to the dealer about the problem, keep notes. Keep a file with the letter and the notes. IF, if, IF anything ever fails and you have all that documentation, you'll find the company much more agreeable to finding a fix. Explain to the dealer what happened when JR was on the bike. I presume the reverse is still working but making them aware that you had the problem (possibly)... if they don't say "bring it in and we'll fix it." at least you gave them a chance to do so. Document, document, document. Good luck.

Recalls with no parts available seem more common post-COVID. Waited well over a year for parts to be available for the HPFP recall on my Ecodiesel. Unfortunately, the world we live in ...
@FreewheelerLover5 күн бұрын
At least with most recalls there is a known "fix" for an issue. The Harley reverse motors are crap but at least it's a fairly easy fix (heck, take the motor to an alternator shop and get it fixed for around $100). The big problem with this BMW recall is there is no fix other than remove the part. I would push back, ask them why they can't just replace the problem seal.
@Klown0015 күн бұрын
the 'easy' fix of replacing the seal doesn't fix the core problem or if the internals did get compromised, you now just covered up a future problem. recalls having a known 'fix' isn't always as start forward as it seems and replacing the reverse motor doesn't fix the problem if the motor design is the problem. edge cases do come up that just can't be 'planned' for to happen/not happen and make it into final production. (I'm coming from the gaming industry) we have patches, hardware doesn't have that easy of a fix.
@FreewheelerLover5 күн бұрын
@@Klown001 But the current fix, remove the gear, wouldn't you still have the same issue, that the seal may already be damaged and therefore cause a future corrosion issue? Removal just mitigates the potential of burning the bike up. It totally stinks no matter what you do.
@Klown0015 күн бұрын
If I understood Jess correctly there is "No current fix" so removing the gear isn't a 'valid/safe' option to them presently. It does stink which is the current problem with all the tech integration, if one thing goes down the whole system is compromised. removing the gear, yes you may remove the part that could burn, but you now have a hole in the system that it wasn't meant to have that could cause more potential damage someplace else, with no real answer to the original problem being fixed, and if they find a fix they now have issues with bikes that removed the gear now having more issues so it seems like not riding bike is the 'safer' option (not ideal) but from a recall stand point their only option with the information they've collected so far.

Sorry to hear about this, Jess! Hopefully BMW will actually come up with a fix but in the worst case, you could have a mechanical reverse installed on your Road Glide and ditch the BMW. If your state has a Lemon Law that applies to motorcycles you could, if you wanted to, make BMW take the R18 back, no matter what their letter says they're offering. Not only is the increasing amount of tech on vehicles an issue, it's the issue of manufacturers using their consumers as beta testers.

In my experience paying more for premium brands and expecting long term reliability and quality is bad decision. That time is long gone. I have first noticed that in cloathing some 15 years ago. Same goes for cars. Every 4 to 5 years, depending on mileage I change company cars. They get worse by every change. when they break it is border line fatal and really expensive. And every one of them did within 150k km. Most of them more than once. That is why I force them to their limits while under waranty. Mid 2000’s was end of quality, reliability and durability for cars. Therefore, my ‘91 mercedes and ‘99 transalp stay in the family indefinitely.

Tip: Don’t damage your saddlebag to the point of needing replacement. I was rear ended by a thankfully, slow moving vehicle. My right saddlebag required replacement. $2800 for all the parts that make up that bag. Additionally it took 9 months to receive the parts. One of the parts itemized, pinstripe on the bag. Good points you discussed about these overly tech bikes. I'm on a 2014 Indian Vintage with very limited tech., No radio, not computer screen, etc. While the liquid cooled bikes tend not to burn you legs, I prefer the V-Twin Air/Oil cooled bikes. That's right air AND OIL Cooled which my Vintage has. Funny thing, Indian removed that oil cooler unit on their newer 2017 & up Chiefs. Since Indian also Discontinued the Vintage I'd go for the Springfield because it's basically a full size Chief too, just with hard bags, but on a positive note, it has much less tech. I know you're not much into HD's fairly equal competitor - Indian. Not trash talking, I just like the Indian brand. I don't care much at all for all the Hi-Tech stuff. For even the 'planned trips' in 2025, I'll have my cellphone GPS, handle mounted, & I'll be just fine. I've always made it home without these add-ons. .

People are asking too much of vehicles. There has been a time in almost each manufacturers life that they found a good formula with something that worked and was reliable but they soon found out that they cant sell as much product if their old product is outlasting the new. I mean manufacturers have made water cooler and air cooled, fuel injected and carbureted bikes for years and theyve been nothing but reliable but now with EPA regulations and people expecting them to be practically houses on wheels.... Nothings made to last forever especially when they add twelve computers and etc etc. also keep in mind that just because they issued a recall doesn't mean that every unit is affected and will immediately suffer Now a days recalls will be issued even if 3 people have an issue that can be deemed unsafe. Now u may think its bad but this is free support for your vehicle after you've bought it. Very expensive for manufacturers to have to do for free but its a good thing. Some do not issue recalls and hide them.

It's an electric motor. If water gets in while it's running, it could short out, in which case it will blow a fuse and you'll have to push it backwards. Actually, if it was pure water, that wouldn't even happen. Rain water has electrolytes in it. That's what can make water into a conductor of electricity. As to old bikes, mfgs can still make them. They just can't change them. They're grandfathered. The KLR was such a bike until they just updated it. Pretty sure Honda's still making XLs that I used to ride in the early 80s. Saw one at a dealer recently. Still had the same little square speedo from back then. Really looks funny today.

Hey Jess, The Old Man Here. The problems that are hitting newer motorcycles. That is exactly why I'll stay with old school bikes. No computers. This is my personal feelings about technology in bikes. Ifyou cantride an old school bike. And be able to control it. Without all the computers bullshit. Then you probably should ride at all. Just like all the computers in cars. Traction control the car driving itself. It has made people worse drivers. Because folks rely to much on computers to control their cars. Thus , it has made a division with people becoming one with what they drive. If a computer does it for you. They you and your machine aren't one with each other. But this is merely my option. Take it for what it's worth. Stay safe, everybody.

I wonder if this is why Honda went with an electronic "walking gear" fwd/rev on the '18+ Goldwings?

My 2022 Triumph ST 900 was recalled because of Wiring issue. Took them 15 min to fix it.

So the only possible problem comes when you use reverse??? so you can't use reverse then or shouldn't?

I think both.

That's unfortunate. They really need to fix it. Not bypass it.

I have the Classic and already received my notice. The fact BMW issued the recall before it had a fix, doubled the amount of time these bikes will be in the shop. Once for the disconnect, and once more for the fix.That seems to me that they are concerned for the customer well being. Another manufacturer may have covered up the problem until the fix was designed, manufactured, and distributed to the dealers BEFORE sending out a recall notice.

Absolutely! Very pleased to see they issued a recall asap instead of trying to hide things *cough* toyota *cough*

The NHTSA gives the manufacturers 60 days to notify customers of a reported safety defect, that is the law.

The letter is a CYA move. They have decided the cost to repair will exceed the money they made on the bike sales. Money will drive this, most likely a lawsuit will motivate them. Unfortunately. IMHO Fellow Ohioan, Cleveland suburb.

customers can always file a collective lawsuit, not an individual one

You can still get a Moto Guzzi V7, which is quite low on tech, and runs really well!

Ask for a fix or a full refund. Accompany it with a lawyers letter. What if they said that one of the cylinders was likely to fail and there was no fix ?.

Bummer about the bmw. If they don’t figure it out then maybe a buy back. If they disconnect it for safety then BMW equals leg day Ride safe Jess

Gold Wing DCT. Has walking-pace reverse and forward. I think they call it "crawl" or something like that. Best of all, unlike the BMW crap (I used to own a K1600b) IT WORKS!

I agree, way to much technology going on with these new motorcycles not sure if I completely trust all this new technology plus repairs would be very costly opposed to the air cooled.
