My Case CX160B has pretty much the same kind of hydraulic filters as yours does. There will be a screen at the bottom of the first hole you went in. But to take it out, you need to drain the oil out first so if there is metal or whatever in it, that it won't get in the suction line going on to the pump when you pull the screen out. Great video, I enjoyed it. Was surprised to see that the two were so similar. 👍

Thanks! I was able to find a schematic of the tank and seen that screen you were talking about in the first hole! I was just so used to the way Cat is set up, that it was a little different!. Not difficult by any means, just different! Thanks again!!

Having a few stainless buffet trays is a plus when doing work like this. U also cut open filters to see what is hidden inside, Always have a magnet handy.

Operators manual is way cheaper than blowing up your pumps...for the sake of running it a for a hundred hours past the filter change until you can figure out how to properly change those filters, it would be time well spent...people make the same mistakes when changing the main filter on a Cat and they pull the filter out first instead of pulling out the canister that the filter sits in and it has caused great damage to their hydraulic systems because any debris that is in the filter is released into the tank instead of staying in the canister the filter sits in...knowledge is power my friend and knowledge saves you money in the end...good luck to you in your future endeavours!!

Hey Andrew. I do have an owners manual and I did reference it beforehand. However, like many of the manuals it's not real informative. But, I've been fortunate in having to work on my own equipment and vehicles for all these years, so I'm pretty mechanically inclined. But as you know, with every new piece of equipment there's always a learning curve. One thing about this machine with it being much newer, it told me it was time to change the hyd oil. Thats what the warning was all about. But, I tend to freak out when my machines start flashing lights and making noises at me. You are correct on the Cat. I used to have a Cat excavator and it was different than this one. The Cat did have the canister and it was a little easier to deal with. However, the canister in my Cat came apart at the bottom and the base of the canister got turned and was partially blocking the return hole which caused an overpressure and tore up all kinds of stuff (about $4500 worth). But that being said, my Cat dealer said they often leave the canister in and pull the filter out and have never had a problem. So....who knows? This one had that funky two piece filter with a weird type O ring/gasket at the bottom of the filters that fit over a valve assembly in the bottom of the tank. Initially, I was disappointed in this filter system but the dealer said they've never had any problems with the design before and they've only seen one or two pumps grenade and this filter system done a great job of catching the pieces parts. Anyway, appreciate your comment.

Maybe, those rings around the filter were intentional to create more pressure in other areas of the filters rather than just flow thru the entire thing. I agree with you but? ASK them. I can't believe you don' have a manual for that fine beast. Regardless, you had us scared for you the other day with the LIGHT on. GLAD you found the fix. DIRT BOSS is another of our go to channels & he has a KOBELKO like you (talk w/Brandon)! Sonny

Yeah, I don't know on those pieces on the filters. Kinda weird for sure!! I called my salesman and asked him about it and he wasn't real concerned. I was puckered up for sure! It was actually the computer telling me it was time to change it based on pre-programmed schedules. Would of been nice for the light to be yellow instead of red! I do have an operators manual but they normally don't show any of the more in depth maintenance procedures. The maintenance manuals are normally very expensive! Yeah, I've talked to Dirt Boss about his before. It's a little older one but in very good shape! Thanks for the comment Sonny!!

“That wasn’t too bad!” He says as he wipes the oil off his arm the second time! I agree that it could be worse… but, at that price, they could have molded a couple of canoe clips into the rubber gasket… or a small lip that would hold it in place. It would have held it tight to the filter assembly. Then you wouldn’t of had to fish the old one out or risked misplacing it during install. They could also have stamped ‘Filter’ on the lid so you wouldn’t have to guess! There is a concept called Poka-Yoke used in manufacturing. It means fool-proofing. Instead of assuming all operators and mechanics are experienced pros doing the job… assume the person is not. How do you set up the machine, parts and work area so that anyone (but a careless idiot) can figure out the job in just a few seconds? The term comes from Japan… obviously Kobelco isn’t Japanese! The Chinese don’t have that kind of horse sense! Thanks, I enjoyed seeing this process.

Lol!! Yeah, it's always nice to have things idiot proofed! But, it all worked out and wasn't bad. The rubber gasket on the bottom was kind of a weird way of doing things, should of been secured better like you said.🤷‍♂️ Actually, Kobelco is a Japanese company and is a subsidiary of Kobe Steel. The American headquarters is in Katy Texas, and the American manufacturing plant is in Moore South Carolina (where mine was made). Thanks!!

You were supposed to turn that handle on the top of filter 180° then pull up so you're not letting debris drain out of the filter into the 2 open ports at bottom of filter canister, now that debris will travel through your whole hydraulic system before it comes back to the filter and is removed. This is a common mistake made by people that do it themselves and causes damage to the hydraulic system.

Hey Bill I appreciate your comment! But, this isn’t a Cat machine and doesn’t have the canister system. I had a Cat 312 that had the canister system like your talking about. And yes, you are correct with what you are saying. However, Kobelco has different system.
