In my opinion, Lynard Skynard was and always will be one of the best bands that ever walked this earth. The plane crash was devastating to so many people who loved them. Thanks for reacting to this wonderful song brother. I'm glad you sat back and let it sink in to your soul.

Yes, Ronnie Van Zant was the lead singer and he, along with the lead guitar player Steve Gaines and his sister, back up singer Cassie Gaines, their road manager and the two pilots were killed on Oct. 20, 1977. The other members lived. Ronnie's brother Johnnie Van Zant took over as lead singer.

Gaines wasn't in the band when they recorded this. Ed King was the third guitarist when this album was recorded. This is from their first album in 1973. Gaines didn't join the band until late 1975 or early 1976.

I was introduced to Skynyrds music at about 10 years old(and this was in 1999 or 2000). Been a fan ever since that day. Of course, being that I grew up in the same neighborhood as the Van Zant's(decades later) makes their music and stories that much better for me. When I listen to my grandmother talk about going to school with them, and at one point dating Ronnie, it makes me smile and feel nostalgic for a time I wasn't even alive to experience.

Billy Powell gets no love because there were three bangin guitarists-but like Benmont Tench in the Heartbreakers or Clarence Clemons in E Street, he’s the gem that makes the difference from very good band to legendary. He just adds the chef’s kiss you need. His solo in Call Me the Breeze is SMOKIN, from the studio version to any number of live jams at it. He’s killer.

It took me many years to be able to listen to this band without crying. My mom and step dad died coming home from their concert in 2006. I would ask my ex husband if he would take me to get closure. He’d laugh in my face and told me I was stupid as hell. Hence he’s an ex. I asked my current husband if he could take me, I explained why..there wasn’t a laugh. There was a “we need to go”. Low and behold they came to Tampa a day after my birthday. I cried the whole time, but damn was it worth it. I can finally listen to them again and smile and remember the memories their music made while my mom was still here. Their lyrics are magic. Instruments playing are a part of history. I hope you go down the rabbit hole and enjoy it. 💜

In 1975 when l was in college, l heard Sweet Home Alabama on the radio just before summer break and thought, gee they sound really good. When l got home l found out Rod Sterwart and Faces were near the end of tour with Ronnie Woods already playing with Stones and last time with Faces. There were 3 bands, Rod last, Tens Years after 2nd and this band named Lynyrd Skynyrd first. Well l only heard the one song and had no idea what other songs they had to play. Well, can you imagine my experience listening for first time, and live to boot?!! Blew us away along with 30,000 other people there, so much l was emotionally drained and 100 percent satisfied l didn't care if the Beatles were next. By the way, the ticket was $7.50. Well, Allie Sherlock has done the same to me. She's only 15 with the most incredible voice your ears can hear, just fantastic, a total package, watch a star grow before your eyes and ears!. She's an Irish Busker with a little celtic. Definitely check her out!!

The plane crash was 43 years ago on Oct 20th. They left from my hometown, Greenville SC. There were known engine issues- according to survivors (see also the infamous 'Street Survivors' album cover with removed flames) Ronnie Van Zant insisted they use the plane to make the next gig, saying "If it's your time to go, it's your time to go". The fact that there isn't a historical marker or at least a memorial plaque infuriates me. RIP.

When I was a high school freshman, my Algebra class desk had the name Lynyrd Skynyrd carved into it. I knew the name, but really nothing else. By the time I was a high school junior (after the plane crash in 1977), “Free Bird” was played at least three times at every high school dance. The year after I graduated, the following summer, August of 1980, I saw Rossington Collins Band (pretty much the survivors of the Skynyrd crash) at Roseland in New York City. They finished the show with “Free Bird” without a vocalist in respect for Ronnie Van Zant. It was truly one of the most emotional moments of my life. 😢 Lynyrd Skynyrd was special. 💜

Eargasm is the word you are looking for to describe the piano solo. Now jazz it up a little and play, 'Call Me the Breeze.' That should make you happy. And just keep you going, Johnny Taylor has a song called 'Disco Lady' from his album called Eargasm. You shouldn't have any problem figuring out the meaning of that song. The biggest hit of his career and disco classic. Go ahead, young man. Go ahead!!!

@@Trac489 Hi Tracy, yes, idk what’s going on or if it was just me. In the beginning I had that problem but then I started receiving them regularly. Probably the last 4 or 5 I didn’t receive any again. At least we know we’re not the only ones. If it changes I’ll let you know 👍🏻☮️

This is a warm spring day with a southern breeze. Blowing away all the cold wet crap that winter left us. Has always stay safe and fight the power.

Love Skynyrd! This is one of my faves! Love Gary Rossington's guitar solo & Billy Powell on the piano...the live version is killer too...you should try 'That Smell", "I Need You" & "The Breeze"...

This song!!😭😭😭 We played this at a good friend's funeral, she was murdered in 1981 and this was her favorite song..we sat at her grave many nights with this song blasting on an old 8 track from a friends car, doors open and singing as loud as we could. this song always hit me dead in my heart.

Oh man, better buckle up and get ready to go to church, Lynyrd Skynyrd is a deep rabbit hole of soulful, bluesy, real life story telling with some amazing jams.

Have to agree with you my friend about the piano solo. Billy Powell was a classically trained pianist so any time he plays it is a beautiful piece. Billy was the bands roadie until Ronnie walked in one day to hear Billy playing his take on Freebird on the piano. Billy was immediately hired.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of the finest bands of the 70s then in 77 they were involved in a plane crash the lead singer one of the guitars and a backup singer would killed I think with the couple others in 1987 the lead singers younger brother reunited the band and may have played up until 2020 I personally have seen this band 14 times in concert one of my all-time favorites and I'm 59 years old some of the best bluesy rock and roll ever recorded hats off to Lynyrd Skynyrd
