Yeah, there is a backing track with some vocals and instruments on it but Chappell is signing and and band is playing live over that backing track. If you want to see her perform 100% live you need to check out her Tiny Desk concert. What her and the band do with that is absolutely amazing.

it’s amazing that you guys picked up on the ‘drag’ of chappell. her performance is often comedic and sarcastic and extremely campy - and her outfit will ALWAYS be outrageous. Definitely react to more!! I’ll always prefer her live than studio because of the energy she brings. Some of her other hits people will probably request are ‘Pink Pony Club’, ‘Good Luck Babe’, and ‘Hot To Go’. My personal favourite of hers, which unfortunately doesn’t have a popular live performance of i don’t think, is ‘Naked in Manhattan’!

I'd LOVE to see the JIMMY FALLON Good Luck Babe live performance (it's the best one imo) and the official video of Kaleidoscope where she is singing live - she so multi faceted and surprising. Another artist that can't be pigeon holed. Loved that you embraced the drag vibe - this particular set up reminded me of the Major Tom - David Bowie filmclip.

For the record her entire band is female. As for the back and forths- she came up in and heavily influenced by drag performances so she does a lot of call and response both with the band and with the audience because it's important to her that her songs are meant to be performed live and the performance is as much apart of her art as the song itself

Yes, Chapell likes to have other participation in her performances. She wrote Hot to Go because she wanted a song that had her audience participate. There is a "dance" that goes with the song that she teaches before every performance of that song. With this song, I can imagine that her audience sings those parts back to her as well. Which I believe is part of her genius. Please react to more!! She is amazing!

Yesss this look especially is so Boy George. I love that Chappell always commits. Her tiny desk is amazing. It was my first exposure to her, and her vibrato especially in the NPR tiny desk reminded me of Cyndi lauper immediately. Also great because you can hear the full band and backing vocals which are amazing
