An SNL audience NEVER sings that hard to a song. They love her.
@Wiley_Coyote12 күн бұрын
That stage is notorious for bad sound quality (at least live vs what goes over mikes to the viewing audience). Plus random shiate audiences who won a ticket lottery with no idea of the guests. So for both of those reasons an audience singing along is... very unusual.

@@handlesareobnoxious I mean they for sure had a heads-up. It doesn’t make for a good show if the audience didn’t participate when they’re asked to 😅 But also, these fans are Chappell fans, so they definitely don’t need to be reminded about it. She only actually started vocal training at the end of 2022! Pink Pony Club didn't get her dropped from the label per se but they really didn't get the vision and when covid came they used it as an opportunity to drop a lot of smaller artists like Chappell as they weren't making enough money.

@HegeOfficial This was the first vid of yours I've seen, I don't hang out at individual reactors' sites because I'm a Chappell Roan video tramp. I've seen many reaction vids now, and it's often a joyous thing because people are so surprised at and thrilled by what they experience. IDK if you ever do full album reactions, but even if you haven't done any before, you should do The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. You will not regret it. (And you'll attract a lot of views too.) It's a masterpiece... "No skips" is such a understatement it's an insult. And a 14 song rollercoaster ride. Empathetic people who follow the narratives/read the lyrics too... Chappell's heavily about narrative... often do get hit hard in the feels. But it's worth it.

It was the audience. Not a prerecord. Chappell has been approaching Freddie Mercury levels in her ability to motivate her audiences to participate. At her Austin City Limits Week One festival. She had 100K+ people singing Pink Pony Club and it could be heard 10 miles away. She has the Hot to Go Dance which there is footage of 10's of thousands of people doing at once. She is very very much a live performer at heart and feeds off her audiences, and it's the part of her job that she loves the most. And she has had no formal vocal training. She is self taught.

@jevonkasitch9991 You know you're my go-to guy for much chappellania, but I think Lolla's own estimate for the crowd watching Chappell -- trying to anyway -- was approx 80,000. And that 110,000 was either the total no. of people there any time Sat. + Sun., or maybe just any time Sunday.

I first heard her in the tiny desk concert she performed with NPR. The person she instantly reminded me of was Sarah Slean, a Canadian singer who isn’t really well known, but has a song called Sweet Ones that was big in 2001. She does VERY similar vibrato and vocal flips (if you love Chappell and haven’t heard Sarah Slean do yourself a favour and check her out). She was part of the small cabaret pop scene that emerged during that time. Her voice also reminds me of Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries, which I believe Chappell is a fan of. I would love to hear her talk more about her influences to see what she would consider her musical lineage! Love Chappell and am so glad to see that music can still be fun, camp, and extremely good.

@saraghhh Chappell loves the Cranberries. Elsewhere here in comments I list many of her influences. There's vid of her covering a Cranberries song. Chappell has long struggled with depression; she's bipolar type 2. Her 2017(?) EP is dark and emo-y. She made a conscious decision on writing Pink Pony Club in Feb 2019 to change directions, and made her specialty sparkley fun anthemic narrative pop. Took a few years to take off, but look at her now!

4:50 I've been saying for months to everybody that I know that loves Chappell, that she has to have some sort of musical theater experience! Thank goodness, I'm not the only one lol. I hope that I get to see Chappell live someday, because PHEWW what a talented performer! I loved this performance so much. If you haven't watched it yet, her performance of The Giver on SNL was her debut of the song and it's soo campy, I love it so much. ***Edit: Pink Pony! From one theater kid to another: You're gonna love her album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - I suggest to listen to it in track order, it's a narrative album (which is my favorite lol). I also highly recommend Remi Wolf and her album Big Ideas - it just barely took my 'favorite album of the year' spot from Chappell's album. Big Ideas is also a narrative album, so I suggest the same listening experience as Chappell's album. Remi is like if funky-rock-pop-disco was a genre

I have seen accusations that that's an audio track of the audience singing, but as others have noted, in nearly every performance I've seen her doing this number, she throws that mic out and the audience does sing. It's different in every venue the way the audience sounds depending on whether it's a club or open air, how many people are there. It seems like a genuine thing that her audiences always do, and they packed that SNL audience that night. 💖🎠🌺

Thank you for your reaction, I thought it was great. I appreciate also how you understand that we passionate followers of this newly-broken superstar can sometimes weary a little bit of having her most conspicuous influences repeatedly ticked off. Of course she has them -- as you said, no artist is ever without influences. Everybody in any field of endeavour, in fact, gets to start from the shoulders of those who preceded them. I had the pleasure of getting to hear the music of many of Chappell's important influences as they first hit. I have to say that, as great as they are, I was never nearly as transfixed by Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Alanis Morisette (a big one!), Gwen Stefani, Brandi Carlile (I esp. love Brandi's vocal flips too), Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Lana Del Rey, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Charli XCX -- any of them -- as I am by Chappell Roan. Other Chapell influences included Patsy Kline, Mama Cass and Michelle Phillips, Dolly Parton, Carole King (Chappell is an incredible balladeer, too, btw), Freddie Mercury, Joan Jett, Chrissie Hynde, Delores Riordin, Britney Spears, and Mylie Cyrus. For me, Chappell's unexpected brilliance in songwriting, vocals, aesthetics and performance all four -- she has such ready access to her emotions as she performs! -- seem as if some kind of culmination of where pop music should have been headed all along. And I'd just had no awareness of that until February 15, 2024, when I first heard and saw her perform Red Wine Supernova on the Colbert show. My realization of what a special artist Chappell is has only grown throughout this year. See what you think, as you address her music more deeply.

I wondered about the audience participation too, but she got them involved straight after the 'Saturday' lyric and I think it's real. No doubt they warmed up the audience to do it at soundcheck/rehersal, with the stage managers primed to bring up and down the theatre mics just at the right times. Only an audience member that night can really confirm, but CR does like a singalong 😊

💕The reason you’re getting emotional is the same reason I am. I love typical girl pop music like Sabrina carpenter, Billie eilish, Taylor swift etc but she breaks the mold. Like Billie eilish she differentiates her vocal range in a similar way but on on the different end of the spectrum. Sure we love all of them but we’re craving something different to shake it up a little and we’ve found it with Chappell (Kayleigh )and Billie and that’s the reason they’re so popular💗

Affirmative. She's said in interviews she was a theater kid. You can also tell from her acting in the music videos with storylines. BTW: if you go through her entire album, she'll remind you of at least a dozen different artists. Being a chamaleon is part of her presentation. Stylistically, not the actual voice (which is aleays clearly her). They DID cheat a little with the audience. My understanding is that they had microphones set up beforehand pointed towards the audience. So there definitely was prep, and they definitely turned those mikes on and off at planned times. What I wonder about is the big cheer we hear when the guitar solo starts. If that was preplanned I mean. Its less loud than the audience singing, so those mikes are probably off and its coming through mikes on the stage instead.

Did anyone else notice the Dua Lipa dance move?! Was that on purpose?
@bartlebyscrivener29809 күн бұрын
Dunno Dua's dance moves but Chappell does drop into her lyrics tributes to her influences and other pop girlies. In Red Wine Supernova "California King" is a nod to a Rihanna song. Same song, I contend the abrupt "Brigitte Bardot" is a shout-out to Chrissie Hynde's Message of Love. There's "that Lana song that makes you cry. "California"'s lyrics honor the Mamas and the Papas. There's a very Madonna Vogue couplet in Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl. And... same song?... there's a moment echoing Dua Lipa's "Hot. As. [the excepted F is left unsaid]". I recognize it from an early Dua hit, but don't remember its name. Recently read spec that in PPClub the way Chappell isolates the dramatic "Mama!" is an intentional homage to the way Freddie Mercury did it in Bohemian Rhapsody. Had never occurred to me, but, probably. Freddie is a huge inspiration to her. And there are other homages I'm forgetting. Lana Del Rey does that too. Some songs allude to music and musicians who preceded her.
