Think it's from Brendan Behan's Borstal Boy - there is a short poem in there that ends "God help the Welsh, they will never be free". Behan was likened to our Dylan Thomas - both of whom went in similar circs.

By brother Funeral they play the fields of Athenry and when I hear the song it makes me tear up also l remember the Irish football fans singing it at a football match against Spain it brought goose bumps my friend ask me what are they singing l had to contact my Nephew in England and ask what are singing when told me my friend went out brought it it doesn't matter who singing this song weather at a football match or a Rugby match it brings you to tears

Always remember, the then, five nations weekend in Edinburgh during the late '70s especially if the Welsh or Irish were visiting, it was one big party. In the '60s you had very few spectators at Murrayfield, you could usually get in free.
