What a great boxer and man. Courageous, brave man with a huge heart. Winning the world title when there was only one belt. A true great Welsh and British boxer. We should be proud of this man. Never mentioned but should be. RIP great boxing man.

Criminally forgotten. Going life and death in 2 of those 3 fights with an all time great like Saldivar. That alone shows how good he was.

I well remember Howard in the 60s, a brilliant boxer, such a shame he finished up a night watchman and a porter. If he were around today he would have become a millionaire. I remember Saldivar saying after the fight "Nowhere else in the world would I have got the decision" and that's true, I had Howard winning a close fight. I'm English, but I always rooted for Howard regardless, even if he fought an English fighter. He was so modest and such a gentleman, unlike so many today. RIP Champ.

I followed his career as a school boy back in the 60's. His first world featherweight championship attempt, in 1965, was so close, the radio commentator thought that he had won ! His next attempt was very close too. Howard beat Mitsinori Seki to finally win the title in 1969. A very talented boxer. I still have my boxing scrap books, including cuttings of Henry Cooper , Wally McGowan , Alan Rudkin and Howard. Unfortunately, in his first defence, against Jose' Legra, Howard suffered a huge lump around one of his eyes, early on, which sadly resulted in a stoppage defeat in the fifth round. These were some of Britains best ever boxers, and I am really glad I was around in those days !

It's astonishing enough that so many fistic legends have come from such a tiny country as wales, but then you look at how many came from Merthyr....

Great video, really enjoyed it. Forget the boxing champion side of it, he was a champion Dad who kept his kids after the selfish mother left. Nobody can take that championship away from him. Top bloke 👍

Can't believe I never seen this before... A pleasure to watch one of the greatest fighters to ever come out of the U.K. and a true gentleman. And the fact he came from Merthyr Tydfil made it all the more special... RIP Howard 👍

Howard was one of my favourite British boxers ever! So talented. Deserved to be world champion and unlucky to peak at the same time as a once outstanding Vincente Saldivar. Became the world title holder when already past his best. Wonder how much greater he might have been but for the accident which cost him the tops of the fingers off his right hand. So couldn't fully close that hand into a fist. He had been a decent puncher before then and before going pro.

My grandfather was at the Royal Albert hall in 1968 . He lost his wallet and had to walk home to East London which pissed him off but he said it was a Great Fight although not Welsh ( he was a Cockney through and through ) he said " Winstone " was a TRUE Champion .

Se tuvo que retirar Vicente Saldivar para que pudiera finalmente conseguir el título y frente a otra víctima del zurdo de oro. El japonés Seki. 3 intentos 3 derrotas. Frente a Saldivar
@Kedbuka7 жыл бұрын
Very cool video. Winstone was a fine fighter but "most ringside experts" were Welshman and he did not deserve the decision against Saldivar in their second fight. Vicente was too good for him. And then he knocked him out in their third fight. 3-0 is pretty much conclusive.
@hectorsalcido41067 жыл бұрын
If it hadn't been for Saldivar, he would have been a champion much earlier, by the time he fought Seki and Le gra, he was pretty much a finished fighter, but he did have the heart of a lion.
