I like that 7.62 as a battle rifle. Afghanistan proved the 7.62 as superior in effective distance versus the 5.56

Yea and Afghanistan was the only exception. Nearly 100 percent of modern combat has been within 300 meters where 556 shines. So comparing one conflict is kinda pointless

@user-em1re8et6lAmericans issued some accurized old M14’s using 7.62X51 to extend the range of their infantry. Those evolved into the M21 sniper systems. 7.62X51 NATO was definitely used in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

5.56 has limited long-range effectiveness. Close up with 77 grain ammo it gets the job done. But if you start passing 600 yards you lose the velocity needed for the round to do its damage.

600m under battle conditions is also rather utopic for expecting effective hits. Only really good marksmen can reliably hit at that distance with 5.56, the average can't.

Which is irrelevant for a land war in Europe. Might have been a big deal in Afghanistan with its vast open landscapes, but 5,56 is ideal for the European theater. Many studies have shown that firefights are won by the side that has more ammunition and 5,56 weighs a lot less than 7,62. Having an extra 400 rounds in your squad is much more important than the additional power that 7,62 would bring.

Unfortunately recent events in Ukraine have caused a reassessment of defence in most of Europe. The Germans had allowed their army to stagnate for decades. I hope the Bundeswehr receives the training, equipment, weapons and munitions it requires to defend Germany’s borders and those of it’s NATO allies.

So going back to the G3 days. The good old debate of intermediate and full power round is back. The problem is or was the area of use. Afghanistan was predominately a long range battlefield, Europe especially in what we see in Ukraine is a close quarter, with lot's of ammo use. I believe the DMR and 5.56 combo is best for Europe.

It's interesting how tactics have changed over the decades. Towards the end of WW2, it was realised that most combat took place at ranges far less than the effective range of a standard service rifle. Thus the assault rifle was born with an effective range of about 200 metres. Now we are returning to ranges of pre WW2.

i don't think it would be a great idea to walk around all day with a heavier infantry rifle, sure they could supply some 30 rounder's but it's berter for them to use the 20's as standard. also they are not the first one to do so with a .308 rifle, the FN FAL comes with standard 20 round mags too, just saying they're in the army not at a range day to put a f*cking drum mag and enjoy the 5-8 seconds before emptying it on full auto. stay safe brother 💪🏼
@Kr0noZ
@Kr0noZ Жыл бұрын
@@MBT_EE-T1_Osorio Yeah, 7.62mm is bulky and heavy by comparison, there is a reason 30rd mags are much less common in that caliber. Also, those mags would be really long and stick out too far, that has handling implications on top of the weight concerns.

Referring to a debate in the German Bundestag in 2019, triggered by a request from the opposition, it turned out that the Bundeswehr is only 53 percent operational. This has not changed until 2022, the inspector general of the Bundeswehr once again stated that the Bundeswehr, in its current state, is not in a position to defend the Federal Republic. For example, the Bundeswehr only has ammunition for a week should it be used. For this statement, the General Inspector of the German Armed Forces was fired by the new Minister of Defence, Pistorius. The Bundeswehr is an army for parades and maneuvers, but not for a serious confrontation. Many weapon systems are just complicated and prone to problems. The new Puma infantry fighting vehicle is still not working properly to this day. New frigates for the Federal Navy entered fleet service two years late, the electronics simply did not work. The new weapon system "Mantis" was particularly negative. It partially failed completely. The Bundeswehr doesn't even have enough warm winter clothing. Bundeswehr soldiers who are stationed in Lithuania had to feel this firsthand in the winter of 2022/23. Or the G36 assault rifle, hardly ever used by the troops, it is exchanged again. Even the German tank force has lost its myth of indestructibility. Syria, Yemen and Ukraine have shown this more than clearly. The Bundeswehr is a huge construction site and the 100 billion euros for modernization will not change anything. All secretaries of defense for the past 17 years simply had no idea of their job, they were civilians. Then there are the many civilian agencies or semi-military administrative bodies that have more decision-making powers than any Bundeswehr officer himself.
@Kr0noZ
@Kr0noZ Жыл бұрын
To be fair, letting an officer decide which systems to buy might not be the best idea, I bet everyone has a weapon he likes better than others or has gripes with a certain weapon system. It's not going to be objective; Trials are needed to objectively figure out what works. The main issues are twofold: - Manufacturers get broad requests from the armed forces and are tasked with developing a system that does all the various jobs, instead of being specialized on one thing. The result is mediocrity in all things in order to not have several different systems - streamlining supply lines at the cost of effectiveness - Manufacturers also have too much leeway in the contracts; if a system doesn't work or takes too long to enter service, there are barely any consequences. As a result, you get a lot of half-baked systems at massive delay and cost overruns. Those two points obviously are connected; if we were to get specialized systems for individual jobs, it should be possible to also put the screws to the manufacturers, because we take away the excuse of "complexity" while giving the engineers a clear focus. Yes, troops will need to learn more diverse systems, but if each one works reliably and you can bring the right tool for the job every time you will also get better results overall. Since we moved away from conscription, any soldier signing up is a valuable resource so we should invest more into training anyway to make sure they are as capable as possible.

The G27 is nothing more than an AR10 designed by Armalite who also invented the M16 / AR15 5.56 x 45 rifles used by the US for decades.. Great rifles though! They should go to an intermediate cartridge though such as the 6.8 mm like the US is doing with Sig Saur rifles.. The intermediate cartridge still has the same range basically, and can penetrate bullet proof vests of our enemies and has more so called "Knock Down" power.. Mass X Velocity is KP. It's interesting that the German Army uses the same caliber "7.62 X 51 for their G27 and G5 and yet they replaced the G3 in the same caliber with the G36 which is the 5.56 X 45 Nato round because of the US and Nato. The old G3 was a great rifle. I've shot a few of them. So was the MP5 as we in the US call it.. I'm not sure what Germans call the 9mm sub gun. I'm sure they've replaced it by now. The older G3 used a delayed roller block action that worked great.. In ww2 the Germans learned about Urban warfare at the battle of Stalingrad.. Sadly, many never made it home. 😞 Germans make great weapons..! Too bad they can't own them..

@@busch_ii7450 At the time we still had conscription, so the army had a lot more personell to equip and train, and handing really expensive rifles to new conscripts would likely have cost too much. Can't have nice Zeiss optics on guns which will get dropped at least once by a new guy. Stuff got much more sturdy and reliable since then, and there's a reason the "built-in" optics are no longer a requirement for the next generation of service rifles.

Its not that deep. It just literally is an HK417, in Germany nobody calls its by its army name either it just gets confusing. Also it indeed is an German gun, its not just German made, the whole gun system is improved and by that more reliable and accurate in many situations then the orginal platform . Thats why many including many US units change to the HK416 or HK417. But I dont care im not even German, im an Croatian living in Germany who just was in the army haha@@phillipbanes5484

I wonder where the comments from Americans that they can't buy this in the US are...usually that is the main complaint with any H&K military weapon.

Wonder where they got the idea for that gun. Looks like a 416. 416 looks like an M16. They should just stick with an HK53 with the solid stock. The collapsible stock looks g@y as f. Same for the MP5. The MP5SD and the HK53 w/ solid stock are the sexiest guns HK ever built.

I will bet the Bundeswehr will very much like the German designed US Army's SIG M7 assault rifle, SIG suppressor and Vortex sight system and the M250 light machine gun, both firing the 6.8 x 51 cartridge which is much more effective than the 7.62 x 51 current NATO cartridge. Also the .338 Norma magnum medium machine gun may be adopted by NATO. SIG is on a ROLL!

@@AbuHajarAlBugatti If we had enough to fully equip ourselves already, I's be all for it. As it stands, we need to actually get stuff into our own armories first, so we can then take the old surplus to send off first. Which is still going to be on par with russian stuff because it's from the same era. Although, sending some fancy really new items over for actual battlefield testing (now that the unfortunate situation exists) might be worth it.
