After the state elections in Brandenburg, the AfD is pleased with its own increase in votes, but also with the poor performance of some of its competitors. Federal chairman Tino Chrupalla said in Berlin that he thought it was good "that the Greens, the most dangerous party in Germany, are no longer in the state parliament." The AfD's top candidate in Brandenburg, Hans-Christoph Berndt, said it was to the AfD's credit that the "Germany haters from the Greens and the Left" were not represented in the new state parliament in Potsdam.
The co-chair, Alice Weidel, said with a view to the next federal election that she believes "that we are on the right path, that we must stay the course." The concept of the "firewall" against the AfD will not work in the long term.
According to the preliminary official result, the SPD achieved 30.9 percent on Sunday (2019: 26.2 percent). The AfD, which the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Brandenburg classifies as a suspected right-wing extremist case, gained 5.7 percentage points and reached 29.2 percent. The Sahra Wagenknecht alliance, which was running for the first time, came in third with 13.5 percent, while the CDU only achieved 12.1 percent. The Greens, the Left, the FDP and the Free Voters failed to clear the five percent hurdle and did not win a direct mandate that would have helped them enter the state parliament.
Several young AfD supporters enthusiastically and loudly sang an aggressive song about deportations at the AfD election party in Potsdam for several minutes. They sang: "Hey, this is going crazy, we're deporting them all, all of them." They also held up the slogan "Deport millions" on a board. The chairman of the AfD Brandenburg, René Springer, said that this behavior by members of the Young Alternative was relatively harmless compared to the SPD party youth's demands on abortion. The song is not banned, said Chrupalla.
