ANTISEMITISM: Scandal at Heidelberg University! Rector prevents police from clearing protest
The motto of the University of Heidelberg's summer festival was "Summer Party 2024 United". But instead of joy and solidarity, anti-Semitic disruptive actions caused unrest. No sooner had university rector Frauke Melchior given her opening speech than activists stormed the stage and hoisted a banner on the scaffolding in front of the Marstall cafeteria. Despite the action, Melchior sought dialogue with the activists and emphasized that factual and differentiated discussions were possible in a different setting.
There was little understanding for this action among the audience. Some demonstrators deliberately ran into the audience and shouted slogans to create the impression that more people were involved in the action. Several Jewish students felt unsafe because of the anti-Semitic action and called the police. However, the university administration prevented them from intervening and removing the banner from the 12-meter-high scaffolding due to safety concerns.
Several university groups expressed their incomprehension and criticized the actions of the university rector. They accused her of rewarding the activists for their action. Now there are to be consequences. The University of Heidelberg regrets the events and has announced that it will investigate them. The disruptive actions, which lasted about 5 to 7 minutes, were taken up by the rector by asking the disrupters to either attend the party or leave.
The university is now planning to organize a round table with all those involved. The anti-Semitism commissioner for the state of Baden-Württemberg is also expected to attend.
