Euro 2024: Netherlands vs Poland - Hooligan riots feared! Hamburg police are prepared
WELT reporter Alina Quast is covering the entire European Championship in Hamburg. Yesterday there was already a lively atmosphere on the Reeperbahn as the Dutch fans celebrated in orange. Today the Polish fans are coming to town. But how peaceful will the encounter between the fan groups be?
Alina speaks to the chief police director Andreas Meyer about the current situation. 600 Polish fans have already arrived peacefully in Hamburg, albeit an hour late. The mood is calm so far and everyone is looking forward to the game.
Yesterday, 35 men were checked at the main station, some of whom were taken into custody because they were carrying so-called passive weapons. Mr Meyer stressed that these measures are necessary to ensure security and keep violent fans away. Increased controls are also being carried out at the borders with neighboring countries to keep away hooligans and violent fans. For example, a minibus from the Netherlands was stopped with 50 smoke bombs.
The police are using extensive controls and preventive measures to minimize the risk of hooligan riots. Mr. Meyer assesses the situation as such that the majority of fans will remain peaceful and the celebrations in Hamburg will be safe. The police will also have an increased presence today to accompany the fan march of 40,000 Dutch fans.
Hamburg is well positioned and safe, emphasises Andreas Meyer. The city is ready for the coming weeks of the European Championships and the challenges that come with them.
